TEM study on a-axis outgrowth formation in c-axis oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films

  • Using modified melt-textured grown targets, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition technique at the laser energy density from 1 J/cm$_2$ to 4 J/cm$_2$. All the films showed c-axis preferred orientations, however, a-axis outgrowths on the film surface were considerably increased with an increase of the laser energy density. To examine the origin of the a-axis outgrowth formation, the microstructures of films deposited at 2 J/cm$_2$ and 4 J/cm$_2$ were investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution electron microscopy. It was shown that a significant number of Y$_2$O$_3$ inclusions were formed during the growth of c-axis oriented films at 4 J/cm$_2$. These inclusions formed nucleation sites for the a-axis outgrowths. It is considered that, due to the unstable growth conditions with a high flux density of incident vapor species and the strain induced by the surrounding c-axis films, the Y$_2$O$_3$ inclusions would prefer the nucleation of α-axis grains.

  • $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ 고온 초전도체 상을 MgO 단결정위에 증착시키기 위하여 액상의 에어로 졸 입자를 저온 플라즈마의 화학증기 증착로안에 유입하였다. 플라즈마의 분포를 조절하기 위한 반응로의 설계에 따라 초전도체상의 미세구조가 변화하는 양상을 관찰하였으며, 이때 증착 기판 위에서 관찰되는 입자들의 생성원인에 대하여 고찰하였다. 입자생성의 주된 원인으로는 불안정한 플라즈마의 분포와 출발원료의 낮은 기화속도에 기인하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 증착속도는 출발원료가 기화되는 곳으로부터 멀어질수록 급격히 감소하는 것으로 밝혀졌다.

  • $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) powders for the fabrication of bulk superconductors were synthesized by the powder reaction method using $Y_2O_3$ (99.9% purity), $BaCO_3$ (99.75%) and CuO (99.9%) powders. The raw powders were weighed to the cation ratio of Y:Ba:Cu=1:2:3, mixed and calcined at $880^{\circ}C-930^{\circ}C$ in air with intermediate repeated crushing steps. It was found that the formation of Y123 powder was more sensitive to reaction temperature than reaction time. The calcined Y123 powder and a mixture of (Y123 + 0.25 mole $Y_2O_3$ + 1 wt.% $CeO_2$, $Y_{1.5}Ba_2Cu_3O_x$ (Y1.5)) were used as raw powders for the fabrication of poly-grain or single grain superconductors. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c,onset}$) of the sintered Y123 sample was 91 K and the transition width was as large as 11 K, whereas the $T_{c,onset}$ of the melt-grown Y1.5 sample was 90.5 K and the transition width was 3.5 K. The critical current density ($J_c$) at 77 K and 0 T of the sintered Y123 was 700 $A/cm^2$, whereas the $J_c$ of the top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) processed Y1.5 sample was $3.2{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$. The magnetic flux density (H) at 77 K of the TSMG-processed Y123 and Y1.5 sample showed the 0.53 kG and 2.45 kG, respectively, which are 15% and 71% of the applied magnetic field of 3.5 kG. The high H value of the TSMG-processed Y1.5 sample is attributed to the formation of the larger superconducting grain with fine Y211 dispersion.

Accurate Measurements of the Unloaded Q of a Dielectric-loaded High-Q $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode Cavity Resonator with HTS Endplates

  • Methods for mode identification and accurate measurements of the unloaded Q ($Q_0$) of a dielectric-loaded $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode cavity resonator with HTS endplates are proposed. A resonator with a sapphire rod and $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(YBCO) endplates was prepared and its microwave properties were studied at temperatures above 30 K. The $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode $Q_0$ of the resonator, designed to work as a tunable resonator with variations in the gap distance (s) between the sapphire rod and the top YBCO, was more than 1000000 at s = 0 mm and at 30 K with the resonant frequency of 19.56 GHz. The $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode $Q_0$ decreases as s increases for s < 2 mm until mode couplings between the $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode and other modes appeared at s = 2 mm. Significant dependence of the $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode $Q_0$ on the input and output coupling constants was also observed. Applications of the open-ended $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode cavity resonator for a tunable resonator with a very high Q as well as a characterization tool for the surface resistance measurements of HTS films are described.

TFA-MOD법에 의한 금속기판 위 YBCO 박막 제조 (Fabrication of YBCO films on metal tapes by the TFA-MOD process)

  • YBCO thin films on metal substrates were prepared by the metal-organic deposition using trifluoroacetates (TFA-MOD). To compensate the loss of Ba element from the precursor films due to the reaction with $CeO_2$ cap layer, we have employed Ba-excessive precursor solutions of $YBa_{2+x}Cu_{3}O_{7-{\delta}}$ ($0{\le}x{\le}0.1$). The precursor solutions were dip-coated on the metal substrates with $CeO_2$ cap layer, initially heated up to $400^{\circ}C$, and finally fired at the various high temperatures for 2 h in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. With this approach, YBCO films possessing critical temperature over 85 K could be successfully prepared on the metal substrates. The highest $T_{c,zero}$ value of 86 K was obtained from the Ba-excessive YBCO film of x=0.005 in $YBa_{2+x}Cu_{3}O_{7-{\delta}}$ fired at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. However, unexpected $T_c$ suppression even in Ba-excessive YBCO samples requires further identification.

${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_{7-x}}$초전도체의 고온변형특성 (High temperature deformation characteristics ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_{7-x}}$ superconductor)

  • YBCO산화물초전도체의 고온변형 특성을 조사하기 위하여 $890^{\circ}C$ ~ $930^{\circ}C$의 온도범위에서 $1.0 x 10^{-5}s^{-1}\sim 1.0^{-4}s^{-1}$의초기변형속도로 압축시험을 수행하였다. 변형온도가 증가함에 따라 또한 초기변형속도가 감소함에 따라 flow stress는 감소하였다. 변형률속도 민감지수는 0.41-0.46이었다. 이는 초소성 변형이 일어났음을 보여준다. 초소성변형에 대한 활성화 에너지는 약 500 ~ 580KJ/mol이었으며 Ag첨가량이 증가할수록 활성화에너지는 감소하였다. 초소성변형된 시편들의 미세조직 관찰결과 변형중에 결정립 성장이 일어났으며 Ag양이 증가함에 따라 이러한 현상을 뚜렷하였다. 변형후 결정립 형태는 등축상을 유지하였다. 이러한 결과로 볼때, YBCO 초전도체의고온변형기구는 확산을 동반한 결정립계 미끄러짐으로써 그 비율은 전 변형량중 약 65%정도였다.

  • Excimer laser has been used to fabricate superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$\sub$7-x/(YBCO) thin films on various substrates. An XeCl excimer laser with an wavelength of 308 nm was used to deposit both buffer layer and superconducting thin film on sapphire substrate. The characterizations of the interface between thin film and substrate were performed. The interfacial properties of thin films on buffered sapphire and on bare sapphire were compared. With a 20 nm PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$\sub$7-x/(PBCO) buffer layer, no diffusion layer was observed between film and substrate while the diffusion layer with about 30 nm thickness was observed between film and sapphire without buffer layer.
