  • YBCO coated conductor is named by second generation superconductor tapes. It is different with first generation superconductor tapes. YBCO coated conductor's specific difference with Bi-2223/Ag tape is more strong mechanical durability. This is important role to apply to superconducting machines. For mechanical transforming of YBCO coated conductors, we are using the well designed former. The merit of transformation is several. First, we vary the superconducting characteristics according to mechanical stress. Second, we reduce the volume of superconductor, so we achieve reducing the volume of superconducting machines. On this study, we experiment the transporting current characteristics of one types YBCO coated conductor. YBCO coated conductor with Ie of 70 A and voltage grade of 0.6 V/cm were connected to spiral former to conduct current application test.

  • YBCO coated conductors (CC) on the $CeO_2$-buffered IBAD-MgO template were fabricated by metal-organic deposition (MOD) Process with Ba-trifluoroacetate and fluorine-free Y and Cu precursor materials. The precursor solution was coated on $CeO_2$-buffered IBAD MgO templates using the multiple dip-coating method, decomposed into inorganic precursors by pyrolysis up to $400^{\circ}C$ within 3 h, and finally fired at $740{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. Microstructure, texture, and superconducting properties of YBCO films were found highly sensitive to both the firing temperature and time. The high critical current density ($J_C$) of $1.15\;MA/cm^2$ at 77.3K in the self-field could be obtained from $1\;{\mu}m$ thick YBCO CC, fired at $740^{\circ}C$ for 3.5 h, implying that high performance YBCO CC is producible on IBAD MgO template. Further enhancement of $J_C$ values is expected by improving the in-plane texture of $CeO_2$-buffer layer and avoiding the metal substrate contamination.

  • Multi-stacked HTS tapes are needed to conduct large current in the power application. In this paper, magnetization losses of the multi-stacked YBCO coated conductor and the BSCCO tape have been measured and compared. Magnetization losses of single tape, 2-stacked, 3-stacked and 4-stacked HTS tapes have been presented in this paper. Multi-stacked tapes have been fabricated using face-to-face type stacking method. Measurements of magnetization loss were performed under various angle of external magnetic field to consider the anisotropic characteristics of HTS tapes. Test results show that loss density per unit volume decreased for both YBCO coated conductors and BSCCO tapes when the stacking number of tapes is increased. The magnetization losses of YBCO CC are larger than those of BSCCO tapes when the external magnetic field is increased.

  • In the case of designing superconducting power apparatuses using the second generation high temperature superconducting wire, it is necessary to have a tape-splicing technique to achieve low splice resistance between coated conductor (CC) tapes. In this paper, an experimental splice method between YBCO CC tapes is proposed for a coil application. Splices were performed with a 37Pb-63Sn solder. YBCO samples were fabricated with various pressures and cooling rates. Joint resistances of the spliced samples of jointed YBCO CC tapes were measured and evaluated from V-I curves. In addition, optical micrographs were obtained to analyze the cross sectional microstructure of jointed samples.

  • The magnetic flux profiles in SmBCO and YBCO coated conductors(CC) in the presence of the external field were comparatively investigated by magneto-optic image and scanning hall probe measurements. The current distributions calculated by using the inversion method from measured field profiles show that the decrease of current densities near the edges of SmBCO CC is more significant than those of YBCO CC. Through the comparison of the numerical analysis based on Kim's critical state model and the Brandt and Indenbom's solution, we found that this feature is related to their different field dependant properties of the critical current densities.

  • We fabricated Ni-substrate for YBCO coated conductors and evaluated the effects of pressing and annealing temperature and time on texture. Ni substrate was fabricated by powder metallurgy technique and compacts were prepared by applying uniaxial or isostatic pressure. The texture of substrate made by applying cold isostatic pressure (CIP) was stronger than that by uniaxial pressure which we attribute to the fact that the CIP method provided higher density and more uniform density distribution. It was observed that the substrate annealed at 400 C showed both retained texture and recrystallized texture. On the other hand, the texture of substrate significantly improved at annealing temperature above 500 C, forming strong 4-fold symmetry, [111] II ND texture, and FWHM of 9∼10 . It is to be noted that the degree of texture was almost independent of annealing temperature (500∼1000 C) and annealing time(1∼54 min, at 1000 C). EBSD and AFM analysis indicated that 99% of grain boundaries was low angle grain boundary and RMS was approximately 3 nm, respectively. Development of strong cube texture and high fraction of low angle grain boundary of Ni-substrate made by powder metallurgy technique in our study is considered to be suitable for the application of YBCO coated conductors.

It is to be noted that the degree of texture was almost independent of annealing time and the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of in-plane and out-of-plane was measured to be in the range of 9.55$^{\circ}$-10.53$^{\circ}$ and 8.57$^{\circ}$-9.85$^{\circ}$, respectively. • YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) coated conductors were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on short buffered substrate in continuous PLD reel-to-reel system. The oxide multilayer buffered substrate of architectures of CeO$_2$/YSZ/Y$_2$O$_3$was fabricated by PLD at steady status. The degree of texture of each layer was investigated using X-ray diffraction including $\theta$-2$\theta$ scans, $\omega$-scans and $\Phi$-scans analysis. Their surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) The FWHM of the X-ray $\omega$-scans and $\Phi$-scans indicated that YBCO and buffer layers closely replicate the in-plane and out-of-plane texture of metal tape. Critical current at 77K self-field of 19A, critical temperature of 86K, and current density of 2MA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were measured. The film also exhibits a homogeneous and dense surface morphology.e morphology.

  • Textured Ce$O_{2}$ buffers for YBCO coated conductors were deposited on biaxially textured Ni substrate by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition The texture of deposited Ce$O_{2}$ films was varied with deposition temperature(T) and oxygen partial pressure($Po_{2}$). ($\ell$ 00) textured Ce$O_{2}$ films were deposited at T= 500~$520^{\circ}C$, $Po_{2}$= 0.90~3.33 Torr. The growth rate of the Ce$O_{2}$ films was 150~200 nm/min at T= $520^{\circ}C$ and $Po_{2}$= 2.30 Torr, which was much faster than that prepated by other physical deposition method.

  • Normal zone propagation (NZP) within jointed YBCO coated conductors (CC) was analyzed experimentally. The joint between CC tapes were conducted by lap joint method and the characteristics of the jointed CC tapes measured from V-I curve. NZP was induced by thermal heaters attached to two points of the jointed CC tapes; the voltages across the jointed CC tapes were measured and recorded. NZP induced by each heater point is compared in point of protection of CC tapes and magnet. This study about NZP of the jointed tapes may be useful to make a magnet system with several coils using YBCO CC.
