  • We have performed the current and voltage loading tests of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$(YBCO) films with the diameter of 2 inch. The SFCL consists of meander-type YBCO stripes covered with 200 nm Au layer grown in situ for current shunt and heat dispersion at hot spots. The minimum quench current of an SFCL unit was about 25 Apeak. Seven SFCL units were connected in parallel fur the current load ing tests at power source of 100 $V_{rms}$ $/2,000A_{rms}$. This SFCL units had maximum limiting current of 170 Apeak during the fault instant and then successfully controlled the fault current below 100 Apeak within 1~2 msec after short circuit. Increased short current also reduced the quench completion time with little change of current limiting characterization. We connected six SFCL units in series fur the voltage loading tests at power source of $1,200 V_{rms}$/170 $A_{rms}$ at this time. The shunt resistors were inserted into each SFCL unit to eliminate power imbalance originated from serial connection of SFCL units. Each SFCL unit was quenched simultaneously during the fault condition. The current increased up to 40 $A_{peak}$ and decreased to 14 $A_{peak}$ after 3 cycles. Quench was completed within 1 msec after the fault. We confirmed operating characteristics of 140 kVA($120 A_{rms}$ $\times$ 1,200 $V_{rms}$) SFCL and presented the manufacturing possibility of 3.3 kV SFCL using 4 inch YBCO films.BCO films.lms.

  • We investigated resistance development in $Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_7(YBCO)$ thin film meander lines during high-power faults. The meander lines were fabricated by patterning 300 nm thick YBCO films coated with 200 nm thick gold layers into meander lines. A gold film grown on the back side of the substrate was also patterned into a meander line. The front meander line was connected to a high-power fault-test circuit and the back line to a DC power supply. Resistance of both lines was measured during the fault. They were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment. Behavior of the resistance development prior to quench completion could be understood better by comparing resistance of the front meander lines with that of the back. Quench completion point could be determined clearly. Resistance and temperature at the quench completion point were not affected by applied field strength. The experimental results were analyzed quantitatively with the concept of heat transfer within the meander lines/substrate and to the surrounding liquid nitrogen. In analysis, the fault period was divided into three regions: flux-flow region, region prior to quench completion, and region after quench completion. Resistance was calculated for each region, reflecting the observation for quench completion. The calculated resistance in three regions was joined seamlessly and agreed well with data.

  • High $J_c\;YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ superconducting films were fabricated by MOD method using fluorine-free dichloroacetic acid(DCA) as chelating solvent for preparing precursor solution. Coating solutions were prepared by dissolving Y-, Ba- and Cu-acetates in DCA solvent followed by drying in rota vapor to obtain the blue gel that is diluted in methanol and 2-methoxyethanol for adjusting the cation concentration. DCA-MOD precursor solution was coated on a single crystal(001) $LaAlO_3(LAO)$ substrate by a dip coating method with a speed of 25 mm/min. Coated films were calcined at lower temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$ in flowing oxygen atmosphere with a 7.2% humidity. Conversion heat treatment was performed at various temperatures of $780{\sim}810^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in flowing Ar gas containing 1000 ppm oxygen with a humidity of 9.45%. SEM observations showed that films have very dense microstructures for the films prepared at the temperature higher than $800^{\circ}C$ regardless of diluting solvent; methanol or 2-methoxyethanol. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that YBCO grains grew with a (001) preferred orientation. A High critical current density($J_c$) of 1.28 $MA/cm^2$(@77 K and self-field) was obtained id. the YBCO film prepared using 2-methoxyethanol as a solvent.

  • The magnetization and/or resistivity of high $T_c$ superconductors ($YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$(YBCO) single crystal, $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ (Bi-2212) single crystal, $Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8$ (Tl-2212) film, $HgBa_2Ca_2Cu_3O_8$ (Hg-1223) film) have been measured as a function of magnetic field H and temperature T. The extracted fluctuation part of the magnetization and conductivity exhibits a critical behavior consistent with the three-dimensional XY model. The dynamic critical exponent z does not sensitively vary with a type of the superconductors. The value of z ranges from 1.5 to $1.8{\pm}0.1$. However, the static critical exponent ${\nu}$ is the most largely increased in Tl-2212 that has a weaker interlayer coupling strength than YBCO; the value of ${\nu}$ is 0.669, 0.909, 1.19, and 1.338 for YBCO, Bi-2212, Hg-1223, and Tl-2212 respectively. The results indicate that the weak interlayer coupling along the c-axis of high $T_c$ superconductors near $T_c$ does not influence the dynamic critical exponent z (the same value of superfluid $^4He$), but significantly increases the static critical exponent ${\nu}$.

  • High $J_c\;YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ superconducting films have been fabricated $LaAlO_3(100)$ substrate by MOD method using dichloroacetic acid(DCA) as chelating solvent for preparing precursor solution. Heating rate was varied in order to optimize the calcination heat treatment condition in DCA-MOD method. Coated films were calcined at lower temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$ in flowing humid oxygen atmosphere. The heating rate was calcined from $13.3^{\circ}C/min\;to\;0.28^{\circ}C/min$. Conversion heat treatment was performed $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in flowing Ar gas containing 1000 ppm oxygen with a humidity of 9.45%. Surface and cross sectional SEM microstructures showed that particle sizes were increased with heating rate at a calcination step. The amount of pores was increased with heating rate in the calcined films. Dense microstructure and sharp texture were developed in an YBCO films after conversion heat treatment. A high critical current density (Jc) of $1.26MA/cm^2$ (@77 K and self-field) was obtained for the YBCO film which was prepared with a heating rate of $0.28^{\circ}C/min$.

  • We fabricated $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(YBCO) films on (00l) $LaAlO_3$ substrates prepared by metal organic deposition(MOD) method using trifluoroacetate(TFA) solution. The films with various thicknesses were prepared by repeating the dip-coating and calcining processes. The effects of film thickness on phase formation, microstructures, and critical properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The microstructure and resultant critical current($I_C$) and critical current density($J_C$) varied remarkably with film thickness: The ($I_C$) value increased from 39 to 160 A/cm-width as the number of coatings increased from one to four, while the corresponding $J_C$ was measured to be in the range of $0.84-1.21\;MA/cm^2$. Both the $I_C$ and $J_C$ decreased when an additional coating was applied due to microstructural degradation, indicating that the optimum thickness is in the range of $1.1-1.8\;{\mu}m$. The possible cause for the decrease in the $I_C$ and $J_C$ value for film thicker than $1.8\;{\mu}m$ include non-uniform thickness, increased surface roughness, and the poor formability of the YBCO phase and texture arising from the insufficient heat treatment time with respect to the increased thickness.

  • YBCO films deposited on MgO(100) and Si(100) by rf-magnetron sputtering using stoichiometric single target were annealed under oxygen atmosphere at $880^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The microstructure and superconducting properties of YBCO thin films depended on the composition of pre-annealed thin films. Basal planesuperconducting particles grown on MgO(100) substrate had small and rod-like shade due to preferred orientation, while superconducting film grown on the basal plane-superconducting particles showed round-shape particles. If pre-annealed thin film had nonstoichiometric composition, liquid phase was formed during the heat treatment, which made it easy for particles to grow in the preferred orientation and thus to form textured structure. But the thin films with the textured structure did not show good superconducting properties, especially $T_c$, since the liquid phase transformed into second phase in the grain boundary during the cooling. The effect of the second phase on $T_{c, \;zero}$ was greater than that on $T_{c, \;on}$.

  • We performed Raman spectroscopy on two different over-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO), of which superconducting transition temperatures are 89 K and 77 K. Line-shape analysis of the Raman-spectrum was done, focused on B1g bond buckling mode which have drawn a lot of attention, since photoemission studies showed an evidence for strong coupling between the mode and electron. The line-shapes show asymmetry and are well fitted by the Fano line-shape formula. Remarkably, we found that the peak line-widths from B1g bond buckling mode in BSCCO show much broader than those in YBa2Cu3O7-x. The broad line width can be attributed to the superstructure modulation of BSCCO. Our results imply that B1g bond buckling mode may have close relation to the origin of superconductivity or to boosting the superconducting transition temperature in BSCCO.

  • In an effort to develop alternative single buffer layer technology for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) coated conductors, we have investigated both LaMnO$_3$, (LMO) and La$_2$Zr$_2$O$_{7}$ (LZO) as potential buffer layers. High-quality LMO films were grown directly on textured Ni and Ni-W (3%) substrates using rf magnetron sputtering. Highly textured LZO buffers were grown on textured Ni substrates using sol-gel alkoxide processing route. YBCO films were then grown on both LMO and LZO buffers using pulsed laser deposition. Detailed X-ray studies have shown that YBCO films were grown on both LMO and LZO layers with a single epitaxial orientation. A high J$_{c}$ of over 1 MA/cm$^2$ at 77 K and self-field was obtained on YBCO films grown on both LMO-buffered Ni or Ni-W substrates, and also on LZO-buffered Ni substrates. We have identified LaMnO$_3$ as a good diffusion barrier layer for Ni and it also provides a good template for growing high current density YBCO films. Similarly we have also demonstrated the growth of high J$_{c}$ YBCO films on all solution buffers. We will discuss in detail about our buffer deposition processes. processes.s.s.s.s.

  • The influence of water partial pressure in Metal-organic Deposition (MOD) method was investigated on the texture and the morphology of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) films grown on the buffered metal tapes. The water partial pressure was varied from 4.2% up to 10.0% with the other process variables, such as annealing temperature and oxygen partial pressure, kept constant. In this work, the fluorine-free Y & Cu precursor solution added with Sm was synthesized and coated by the continuous slot-die coating & calcination step. The next annealing step of the YBCO films was done by the reel-to-reel method with the gas flowed vertically down. From the x-ray diffraction analysis, the un-reacted phase like $BaF_2$ peak was found at the water partial pressure of 4.2%, but $BaF_2$ peak intensity is much reduced as the water partial pressure is increased. However, the higher water partial pressure of about 10% in this experiment leads to the poor crystallinity of YBCO films. The morphologies of the YBCO films were not different from each other when the water partial pressure was varied in this work. The maximum critical current density of 3.8MA/$cm^2$ was obtained at the water partial pressure of 6.2% with the annealing temperature of 780$^{\circ}C$ and oxygen partial pressure of 500ppm.
