  • Zirconium nitride powders were synthesized at a relatively lower temperature using methane as a reducing agent in the nitridation of zircoia. $ZrO_2$ powder was prepared by a sol-gel technique. The resulting sol-gel was centrifuged, and the gel was washed with deionized water. Anhydrous ammonia was used as the nitrogen source and methane was used as the reducing agent. Conversion diagrams show the equilibrium solid phase as a function of reagent concentrations for a specific temperature and gas pressure for the reagent system $NH_3-ZrO_2-CH_4$. The reagent concentration ranges within which pure ZrN is formed increase with increasing reaction temperature. Low pressure with an excess of hydrogen decreases the reaction temperature at which pure ZrN is formed. Low pressure together with the introduction of excess hydrogen into the reaction system increases Zr and N conversion efficiency and retards C deposition.

  • Oxidation behavior and microstructural characteristics of nano-sized Sn powder were studied. DTA-TG analysis showed that the Sn powder exhibited an endothermic peak at $227^{\circ}C$ and exothermic peak at $560^{\circ}C$ with an increase in weight. Based on the phase diagram consideration of Sn-O system and XRD analysis, it was interpreted that the first peak was for the melting of Sn powder and the second peak resulted from the formation of $SnO_2$ phase. Microstructural observation revealed that the $SnO_2$ powder, heated to $1000^{\circ}C$ under air atmosphere, consisted of agglomerates with large particle size due to the melting of Sn powder during heat treatment. Finally, fine $SnO_2$ powders with an average size of 50nm can be fabricated by controlled heat treatment and ultrasonic milling process.

  • $Ba_2NaNb_5O_{15}$, hereafter BNN, thin films are attractive candidates for nonvolatile memory and electro-optic devices. In the present work, thin films that have different contents of Ba, Na and Nb have been prepared by H-MOD technique on silicon and Pt substrates. XRD and SEM were used to investigate the phase evolution behavior and the microstructure of the films. It was found that the films of about 450nm thick were crack-free and uniform in microstructure. Nb content strongly influenced the phase formation of the films, where low temperature phase was always formed at the stoichiometric BNN composition. However, the amount of low temperature phase decreased with the increase of excess Nb content, and the single phase (orthorhombic tungsten bronze structure) BNN thin film was obtained at the temperature as low as $750^{\circ}C$ for samples with excess niobium. From this study, the sub-solidus phase diagram below $850^{\circ}C$ for $BaO-Na_2O-Nb_2O_5$ ternary system is proposed.

  • Water dispersible ZnS based nanocrystals: ZnS (blue), ZnS:Cu (green) and ZnS:Mn (yellow-orange) were synthesized by capping the surface of the nanocrystals with a mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) molecule. The MPA capped ZnS based nanocrystal powders were characterized by using XRD, HR-TEM, EDXS, FT-IR, and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the colloidal nanocrystals were also measured by UV/Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies in aqueous solvents. The PL spectra showed broad emission peaks at 440 nm (ZnS), 510 nm (ZnS:Cu) and 600 nm (ZnS:Mn), with relative PL efficiencies in the range of 4.38% to 7.20% compared to a reference organic dye. The measured average particle sizes from the HR-TEM images were in the range of 4.5 to 5.0 nm. White light emission was obtained by mixing these three nanocrystals at a molar ratio of 20 (ZnS):1 (ZnS:Cu):2 (ZnS:Mn) in water. The measured color coordinate of the white light was (0.31, 0.34) in the CIE chromaticity diagram, and the color temperature was 5527 K.

  • To improving the mechanical properties of Mg alloys at high temperature, we investigated the mechanical properties at high temperature and the change of microstructure of Mg-6 wt%Zn-0.4 wt%Mn and Mg-6 wt%Zn-0.4 wt%Mn-1 wt%Ag alloys on age treatment that have a stable MgZn phase at high temperature and $AgMg_4$ improving yield stress. In order to predict thermodynamic data of Mg alloys, a phase diagram and precipitation phase were calculated using a thermodynamic program, and it was confirmed that the MgZn and $AgMg_4$ phase existed as main precipitation in this alloys. The experimental data examined using DSC and XRD were comparable with the calculated data for reliability. In order to analysis the microstructure and precipitate phase during aging treatment, it was measured by SEM/EDS and TEM. Lastly, mechanical properties of the MgZn and $AgMg_4$ phase were measured by a tensile test at high temperature.

  • Rare and unusual occurrence of hydrothermal minerals were found in Geode mine area. They are developed in the late stage of hydrothermal alteration of earlier skarns and later by the open-space filling crystallization. The alteration of earlier skarns of clinopyroxene, garnet, and plagioclase formed mainly chlorite or sometimes uncommon hydrothermal minerals of prehnite, illite, and pumpellyite. Open-space filling crystallization characterized by hydrothermal minerals developedin open sapce or good are prehnite, pumpellyite, clinozoisite, illite, and Ca-zeolites of stilbite annstellerite. Mineral phases and paragenesis are examined in detail by microscopy, XRD, SEM, and EPMA. Using the Schreinemaker's method, equibrium reactions among these minerals are establishedand isothemal-isobaric phase diagrams of $\mu$$H_2O$-$\mu$$CO_2$cot are plotted. Hydrothermal minerals such asprehnite, pumpellyite, clinozoisite, illite, and some chlorite were ffrmed under high partial pressure of $CO_2$with relatively low $H_2$O fugacity. Later, stilbite and calcite in association with illite crystallized under relatively both high partial Pressure of $CO_2$and high $H_2$O fugacity.

  • The basaltic rocks of Daljeon-ri columnar joint (Natural Monuments # 415) and Noeseongsan Noerok site (Natural Monuments # 547) were analysed in order to understand basalt types of two areas. The basaltic rocks of the Pohang Daljeon-ri columnar joint show a typical porphyritic texture containing phenocrysts (olivine and clinopyroxene) and groundmasses composed of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and opaque minerals,. In contrast, basaltic rocks of Noeseongsan Noerok are characterized by fine-grained groundmass with large phenocrysts of plagioclase. Other analysis such as magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence also support the petrological differences of two basalt rocks. The Daljeon-ri basaltic rocks are plotted on phonotephrite volcanic rocks of alkaline series in TAS(total alkali silica), and on within plate basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. The Noeseongsan basalts, on the other hand, are plotted on basaltic andesite to andesite of sub-alkaline series in TAS, and on volcanic arc basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. These results indicate that the original mantle materials between two basalt rocks were different each other, which probably originated from the change of a tectonic setting in the southeastern Korean peninsula during the Miocene.

  • In this study, we attempted to separate and recover Cu from low-grade copper ore by a hydrometallurgical process. The leaching sample obtained after crushing and sieving by 0.355 mm of low-grade copper ore contained 1.5% Cu, 4.7% Fe, 1.0% Mn, and 0.3% Zn. The Cu in the oxide ore was very well leached into sulfuric acid and 97% Cu leaching efficiency was achieved at 80℃ and 3 M sulfuric acid (H2SO4). From the leaching solution, Cu was separated by solvent extraction from Fe, Mn, and Zn using LIX984N. The separation tendency between Cu and other metals was confirmed through the distribution ratio and separation factor. By plotting the McCabe-Thiele Diagram, the optimum condition for recovering Cu is 5 vol.% LIX984N, 2-stage counter-current solvent extraction, and an O/A ratio of 0.5. Using this method, 99% of the Cu was extracted and a CuSO4 solution was finally obtained that contained 1.6 g/L Cu after the stripping process using 2 M H2SO4.
