  • This study investigates the microstructures and the mechanical properties of equiatomic Ti20Mo20Ta20Nb20V20 and non-equiatomic Ti40Mo15Ta15Nb15V15 and Ti60Mo10Ta10Nb10V10 HEAs using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and micro-Vickers hardness test. The specimens were fabricated using the vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process and homogenized at a temperature of 1300℃ for 4 h in a vacuum atmosphere. The determined thermodynamic parameters, Ω ≥ 1.1, δ ≤ 6.6%, and VEC < 6.87, suggested that the HEAs consisted of BCC solid solutions. XRD patterns of all the HEAs displayed single BCC phases. The difference in the solidification rate led to the micro-segregation associated with the elements Ta and Mo enriched in the dendrite arms and the elements V and Ti in the inter-dendritic regions. The HEA specimens showed a decrease in hardness with higher concentration of Ti element because the intrinsic hardness of Ti is lower as compared to the intrinsic hardness of Nb and Mo.

  • The benefits of using DLC coatings on steel in dry sliding are well known. The present study has investigated the effects of using the same materials but in a boundary lubricated environment. Tribological tests were performed using a load-scanning device and a lubricant with an extreme-pressure (EP) additive. XPS and grazing incidence XRD are used for chemical analysis. The chemical composition of the resulting tribofilm is correlated to different friction behaviors and contact loads, and indicates that high loads are beneficial for formation of low friction tribofilm.

  • ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 powder was produced at 1000$^{\circ}C$ by the boehmite sol-gel process with seeding 2 wt% ${\alpha}$-Al2O3. The processes and mechanisms of fornation of ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 was investigated using DTA/TG, XRD, TR spectroscopy and thermodynamic analysis. The specific surface area of the obtained ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 was 16.3㎡/g.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of residual stress at the weldment of pressure vessel by local Post Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT). In order to do it, residual stress were measured before and after local PWHT by XRD on the test piece first. And then, the results of finite element(FE) analysis based on thermal-elasto-plastic-creep theories were verified by comparing with the measured results.

  • The ultra fine gamma-alumina powder was prepared via ammonium aluminium carbonate hydroxide (AACH). The XRD, SEM, BET, thermal analysis were used to characterize the samples. The effects of various reaction parameters as concentration, of solution, anion on specific area, PH, aging time and thermal decomposition condition on the produced AACH and alumina were discussed.

  • Machinable ceramics containing ${\beta}$-spodumene crystal was fabricated by melting method using domestic pyrophyllite. Raw materials were batched by molar ratio of 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, and 5:5 for fluorophlogopite and ${\beta}$-spodumene. These compounds were melted at 1450$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr and formed in graphite mold. Base glasses were heat-treated according to 2-step schedule which was determined from DTA, XRD analysis and SEM observation. Fabricated machinable ceramics have excellent themal, chemical properties and machinability.

  • When concrete structures are built in marine environment, they may be deteriorated and have the poor durability and quality caused by steel corrosion or by chemical attack of magnesium or sulfate ions. Especially, Mg ions contained in seawater make concrete surface weaken by chemical reaction with $Ca(OH)_2$ In this study, a concrete structure built in 1947 was investigated to estimate the factors, especially chemical attack, which can cause concrete to deteriorate. Furthermore, the instrumental analysis methods such as XRD and ESEM were performed to find the reactants in concrete under marine environment.

  • This study examines whether the raw diatomaceous rock, after thermally activated for converting into a pozzolanic form, can improve cement quality(i.e., compressive strength) of the cement-mortar. The diatomaceous rock, heat-treated at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes as an optimum pozzolanic form was mixed with OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) on a weight basis from 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10, 20, 40%. The cement quality was then assessed by the compressive strength and analysis of XRD(S-Ray Diffraction) and SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope).
