Tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum(III); $Alq_3$ has been frequently used as an electron transporting layer in organic light-emitting diodes. Either Ba with a low work function or Au with a high work function was deposited on $Alq_3$ layer in vacuum. And then, the behaviors of electron transition at the $Alq_3$/Ba and $Alq_3$/Au interfaces were investigated by using the near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. In the each interface, the energy levels of unoccupied obitals were assigned as ${\pi}^*$(LUMO, LUMO+1, LUMO+2 and LUMO+3) and ${\sigma}^*$. And the relative intensities of these peaks were investigated. In an oxygen atom composing $Alq_3$ molecule, the relative intensities for a transition from K-edge to LUMO+2 were largely increased as Ba coverage (${\Theta}_{Ba}$, 2.7 eV) with a low work function was in-situ sequentially increased on $Alq_3$ layer. In contrast, the relative intensities for the LUMO+2 peak were reduced as Au coverage (${\Theta}_{Au}$, 5.1 eV) with a high work function were increased on $Alq_3$ layer. This means that the electron transition by photon in oxygen atom which consists in the unoccupied orbitals in $Alq_3$ molecule, largely depends on work function of a metal. Meanwhile, in the case of electron transition in a carbon atom, as ${\Theta}_{Ba}$ was increased on $Alq_3$, the relative intensity from K-edge to ${\pi}_1{^*}$ (LUMO and LUMO+1) was slightly decreased, and from K-edge to ${\pi}_2{^*}$ (LUMO+2 and LUMO+3) was somewhat increased. This rising of the energy state from ${\pi}_1{^*}$ to ${\pi}_2{^*}$ exhibits that electrons provided by Ba would contribute to the process of electron transition in the $Alq_3$/Ba interfaces. As shown in above observation, the analyses of NEXAFS spectra in each interface could be important as a basic data to understand the process of electron transition by photon in pure organic materials.

Electronic structures and chemical bonding of Li-intercalated $LiTiS_2$ and $LiTiO_2$ were investigated by using discrete variational $X{\alpha}$ method as a first-principles molecular-orbital method. ${\alpha}-NaFeO_2$ structure is the equilibrium structure for $LiCoO_2$, which is widely used as a commercial cathode material for lithium secondary battery. The study especially focused on the charge state of Li ions and the magnitude of covalency around Li ions. The average voltage of lithium intercalation was calculated using pseudopotential method and the average intercalation voltage of $LiTiO_2$ was higher than that of $LiTiS_2$. It can be explained by the differences in Mulliken charge of lithium and the bond overlap population between the intercalated Li ions and anions in $LiTiO_2$ as well as $LiTiS_2$. The Mulliken charge, which means the ionicity of Li atom, was approximately 0.12 in $LiTiS_2$ and the bond overlap population (BOP) indicating the covalency between Ti and S was about 0.339. One the other hands, the Mulliken charge of lithium was about 0.79, which means that Li is fully ionized. The BOP, the covalency between Ti and O, was 0.181 in $LiTiO_2$. Because of high ionicity of Li and the weak covalency between Ti and the nearest anion, $LiTiO_2$ has a higher intercalation voltage than that of $LiTiS_2$.
Based on the data collected by R/V "Shinkai Maru" of the Japan Marine Fishery Resources Research Center during the period from April 1978 to April 1979, seasonal migration of Merluccius hubbsi was studied using the catch per fishing effort (tons/30 min. haul) and gonad maturity index (gonad weight /body weight X $10^3$). Merlurccius hubbsi are found in the area between $36^{\circ}S\;and\;54^{\circ}S$ along the coast of Arzentine and are abundant especially above the 100 fathoms in northern offshore of $48^{\circ}S$. It was observed that critical maturity body lengths (spawning minimum body length) in terms of gonad maturity index are 40 cm and 30cm in female and male respectively, while spawning seasons are from December to January and from November to December for female and male respectively. It was assumed that while the group which distrbutes in the north ($36^{\circ}S{\sim}39^{\circ}S$) in spring moves down south to $42^{\circ}{\sim}46^{\circ}S$ for spawning in summer (from December to January), the group which does not move or a part of this group which comes back to the north spawn in the area north of $42^{\circ}S$ throughout the long period except winter time (from July to August). Southern group as well might move north and spawn after mixing together with northern group at $42^{\circ}{\sim}46^{\circ}S$ area around the period of December to January,
This study was carried out to determined the optimum seeding rate and number of seedling stands per unit area for high yield with two varieties of rice, Nakdongbyeo (Japonica type) and Samgangbyeo (Indica x Japonica type), in direct water-seeded rice culture at Crop Experiment Station. Seeds coated with $CaO_2$ after germination were sowed at May 4 in 7 levels, such as 1.6, 1.8, 2.1, 2.7, 3.5, 4.0, 4.3kg /10a, and the number of seedling stands per square meter was adjusted to be 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 plants, respectively. The maximum number of tillers increased as the seeding rates increased, but the ratio of effective tillers decreased. The critical dates of effective tillering of tested varieties were delayed by the lower seeding rates, and the date was June 18 at the plot of seeding rate with 3.5kg /10a. The number of panicles per unit area increased in accordance with the increased seeding rates. The number of spikelets per panicle in Nakdongbyeo was not affected by the seeding rates, but in Samgangbyeo it decreased as the seeding rate increased. The optimum number of seedling stand per square meter appeared to be 78 in Nakdongbyeo and 120 in Samgangbyeo, respectively. It meant that the optimum seeding rates for Nakdongbyeo and Samgangbyeo were about 2.7 and 4.0kg /10a, respectively.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of oral health on the quality of life of elderly patients with dentures or implants. It is our intention that through this analysis we can aid seniors in making the choice between dentures or implants, considering future masticatory function and the likely effects of this decision on the patients quality of life. Methods : This survey was conducted between November 1, 2010 and November 25, 2010, in Kyunggi-Do, whasung city. The research was carried out at one public health center, among elderly patients. 105 seniors were surveyed using the direct interviewing method, oral health related quality of life was measured by the Philadelphia Geriatric Center(PGC) Morale Scale. Collected data was examined using the SPSS 13.0 program, using frequency, mean, and standard deviation analysis, T-test and $x^2$ test. Results : The number of residual teeth for patients who have implants was $20.45{\pm}5.85$, while among those patients with dentures the number was considerably lower, $8.11{\pm}7.66$(p<0.05). The results of patients masticatory function, was $28.13{\pm}2.40$ for those with implants, and $25.35{\pm}4.15$ with dentures. The results were better for those with implants. Among implant patients overall satisfaction was rated $25.21{\pm}3.63$, higher than for those with dentures $20.20{\pm}6.79$(p<0.05). Quality of life was scored higher for patients with implants($12.76{\pm}2.61$) compared to those with dentures($10.47{\pm}3.52$)(p<0.05). The subjects masticatory function was highly related to the number of remaining teeth and greater masticatory function had a positive effect on patients quality of life and life satisfaction. Conclusion : Dental treatments such as dentures and implants will have a great influence on patients quality of life and life satisfaction. Implants can improve the oral health related quality of life and satisfaction and the general quality of life more than denture therapy.

Purpose: This study was to develop an effective process for fabricating biocompatible calcium phosphate powders (CPPs) using horse bones, and to investigate the characteristics of them. Methods: The characteristics of horse bone powders (HBPs) were investigated according to the different osseous tissue types (compact bone and cancellous bone), bone types (spine and tibia), pretreatment methods (cold water, $H_2O_2$, and hot water), sintering time (4, 8 and 12h), and sintering temperature (600, 900, 1100 and $1300^{\circ}C$). In addition, the grinding methods were compared based on the wet grinding (ball mill) and dry grinding (blade grinder) method to make it as powders. Finally, their cytotoxicity and cell viability were checked. Results: Regardless of the types of osseous tissues and bones, HBPs were well fabricated as biocompatible CPPs. It was also found that the pretreatment methods did not influence on the resultants, showing well-fabricated HBPs. Considering the processing time, the hot water method was the most suitable compared to other pretreatment methods. Further, 12h-sintering time was sufficient to remove residual organic compounds. The sintering temperatures greatly affected the properties of bone powders fabricated. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) peak of horse bone sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ was most closed to that of hydroxyapatite (HA). Our bioactivity study demonstrated that the HBPs fabricated by sintering horse bones at $1300^{\circ}C$ showed the best performance in terms of cell viability whereas the HBPs $1100^{\circ}C$ showed the cytotoxicity. Conclusions: Using various types of horse bone tissues, biocompatible CPPs were successfully developed. We conclude that the HBPs may have a great potential as biomaterials for various biological applications including bone tissue engineering.

Nation-wide systematic and comprehensive measurements of air quality criteria species have been made over 340 sites currently in Korea since 1990. Using these data, temporal and spatial trends of $SO_2$, $PM_{10}$, $NO_2$, $O_3$, CO and $O_x(NO_2+O_3)$ were analyzed to characterize and evaluate implementing efficiency of air quality policy and regulations. Due to strict and effective policy to use cleaner fuels in late 1980s and 1990s, the primary pollutants, such as $SO_2$, CO, and $PM_{10}$ decreased sharply by early 2000s in all parts of Korea. After this period, their concentrations declined with much lower rates in most parts of Korea. In addition, isolated but noticeable numbers of places, especially in major ports, newly developing towns and industrial parks, sustained high levels or even showed further degradation. Despite series of emission control strategies were enforced since early 1990s, $NO_2$ concentrations haven't changed much till 2005, due to significant increase in number of automobiles. Nevertheless, we confirmed that the staggering levels of $NO_2$ and $PM_{10}$ improved evidently after 2005, especially in Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), where enhanced regulations for $NO_2$ and $PM_{10}$ emissions was imposed to automobiles and large emission sources. However, their decreasing trends were much lessened in recent years again as current air quality improvement strategies has been challenged to revise further. In contrast to these primary species, annual $O_3$, which is secondary product from $NO_2$ and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), has increased consistently with about 0.6 ppbv per year in every urban part of Korea, while yearly average of daily maximum 8-hour $O_3$ in summer season had a much higher rate of 1.2 ppbv per year. Increase of $O_3$ can be explained mainly by reductions of NO emission. Rising background $O_3$ in the Northeast Asia and increasing oxidizing capacity by changing photochemistry were likely causes of observed $O_3$ increase. The future air quality policy should consider more effective ways to lower alarming level of $O_3$ and $PM_{10}$.
Purpose : Interleukin-6(IL-6), a multifunctional cytokine, has been found to have growth and differentiation activities on a wide variety of tissues and cells, including mesangial cells. It has been known that IL-6 is an autocrine growth factor for the proliferation of mesangial cells. Several studies have been performed for revealing the clinical significance of IL-6 in mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis. Methods : The author measured serum and urinary IL-6 in 30 patients with $Henoch-Sch\"{o}nlein$ purpura (HSP), 18 patients with HSP nephritis, and 10 normal children as a control group. Results : The serum level of IL-6 was increased significantly in the patients with HSP and HSP nephritis compared to normal control. The level of urinary IL-6 was increased significantly in the patients with HSP nephritis compared to both HSP and normal control groups. The level of urinary IL-6 was not correlated with the level of serum. Conclusion : IL-6 was correlated with the amount of proteinuria. These data suggest that IL-6 may be involved in the pathological proliferation of mesangial cell in HSP nephritis.

Purpose: We examined the prevalence and CGG/AGG repeat structure of expanded alleles of the FMR1 gene in preconceptional and pregnant Korean women. Materials and Methods: The CGG repeats in the FMR1 genes of 1,408 women were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and Southern blot analysis. To estimate the prevalence of expansion alleles, the individuals were divided into low risk and high risk group. Results: Within this population, 98.4% had normal alleles and 1.6% had abnormal alleles including intermediate (0.6%), premutation (0.5%), full mutation (0.1%), and hemizygous (0.4%) alleles. There were 2 premutation alleles (1:666, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1:250-1,776) in the low risk group and 5 premutation alleles (1:15, 95% 1:6-36) in the high risk group. There were 8 intermediate alleles (1:167, 95% CI 1:130-213) in the low risk group and 1 intermediate alleles (1:76, 95% CI 1:11-533) in the high group. Six of the 7 premutation alleles did not contain AGG interruptions within the repeats and 1 had a single AGG interruption. Four of the 9 intermediate alleles contained 2-3 AGG, 4 had a single AGG, and 1 had no AGG interruptions. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates the prevalence and CGG/AGG structure of expansion alleles in Korean women. The identified premutation prevalence is higher than that of other Asian populations and lower than that of Caucasian populations. Although our study is limited by size and population bias, our findings could prove useful for genetic counseling of preconceptional or pregnant women.
