  • A target for a high-brightness microfocus x-ray tube, which is based on carbon nanotubes (CNT) as electron source, is designed. The x-ray tube has the following specifications: brightness of $1\times10^{11}phs/s.mm^2. mrad^2$, spot size $\~5{\mu}m$, and average x-ray energy of $20\~40 keV$. In order to meet the specifications, the design parameters of the target, such as configuration, material, thickness of the target as well as the required beam current, were optimized using computer code MCNPX. The design parameters were determined from the calculation of both x-ray spectrum and intensity distribution for a transmission type configuration. For the thin transmission type target to withstand vacuum pressure and localized thermal loading, the structural stability and temperature distribution were also considered. The material of the target was selected as molybdenum(Mo) and the optimized thickness was $7.2{\mu}m$ to be backed by $150{\mu}m$ beryllium (Be). In addition, the calculations revealed that the maximum temperature of the transmission target can be maintained within the limits of stable operation.

  • A radiation spectroscopy detector using a spherical scintillator was designed, and a system was developed to track the position of a radiation source using several detectors. The position tracking algorithm was designed based on the theory that the number of radiations decreases according to the inverse square law of distance, and the position of the radiation source was calculated by measuring the number of radiations generated from the radiation sources at various positions. The radiation generated from the radiation source is detected by different coefficients in each detector, and the difference between these detected coefficients varies in proportion to the inverse square of the distance. Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) simulation was performed to verify and evaluate the performance of the designed radiation source position tracking system, and radiation generated from radiation sources placed at different positions was counted with each detector. The number of measured radiations was tracked through the radiation source position tracking algorithm, and the error between the actual radiation source position and the position calculated by the algorithm was evaluated. The error between the position of the actual radiation source and the calculated position was measured as an average of 0.11% on the X-axis and 0.37% on the Y-axis, and it was verified that the position can be measured very accurately.

  • A high-brightness electron beam source for a microfocus X-ray tube has been fabricated using a carbon-nanotube (CNT) field emitter. The electron source consists of cathode that includes a CNT field emitter, a beam-extracting grid, and an anode that accelerates that electron beam. The microfocus X-ray tube requires an electron beam with the diameter of less than 5 $\mu$m and beam current of higher than 30 $\mu$A at the position of the X-ray target. To satisfy the requirements, the geometries of the field emitter tips and the electrodes of the gun was optimized by calculating the electron trajectories and beam spatial profile with EGUN code. The CNT tips were fabricated with successive steps: a tungsten wire with the diameter of 200 $\mu$m was chemically etched and was subsequently coated with CNTs by chemical vapor deposition. The experiments of electron emission at the fabricated CNT tips were performed. The design characteristics and basic experimental results of the electron source are reported.

  • The development of mono energetic photon sources using $K_{\alpha}$ fluorescence X-ray of pure material was carried out in the energy range below 100 keV. The monoenergetic photons are very useful in the calibration of the radiation measuring instruments and can be produced as the $K_{\alpha}$ fluorescence X-ray by irradiating the bremsstrahlung to the thin pure metal foils called ‘radiators’. In this experiment, several radiators such as $_{47}Ag,\;_{50}Sn,\;_{68}Er,\;_{70}Yb,\;and\;_{82}Pb$ provide the wide monoenergetic photon energy ranging from 20 keV to 80 keV. By the spectrometry with HpGe LEPS, spectral purity factors which measure the monochrometicity for the $K_{\alpha}$ fluorescence X-ray, were determined as $0.64{\sim}0.94$. Dosimetry for the purpose of the determination of the exposure rate with a 600cc thin window ionization chamber, which was calibrated by the standard free-air ionization chamber, was performed. Exposure rates ranging $8.3{\sim}232.5mR/h$ was obtained according to the $K_{\alpha}$ fluorescence X-ray energy for each radiator.

  • Recently High-Definition Reference Korean-Man (HDRK-Man) and High-Definition Reference Korean-Woman (HDRK-Woman) were constructed in Korea. The HDRK phantoms were designed to represent respectively reference Korean male and female to calculate effective doses for Korean by performing Monte Carlo dose calculation. However, the Monte Carlo dose calculation requires detailed knowledge on computational human phantoms and Monte Carlo simulation technique which regular researchers in radiation protection dosimetry and practicing health physicists do not have. Recently the UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) research group has developed, and opened to public, an online Monte Carlo dose calculation system called CALDOSE_X(www.caldose.org). By using the CALDOSE_X, one can easily perform Monte Carlo dose calculations. However, the CALDOSE_X used caucasian phantoms to calculate organ doses or effective doses which are limited for Korean. The present study developed an online reference Korean dose calculation system which can be used to calculate effective doses for Korean.

  • The increased brightness and focused X-ray beams now available from laboratory X-ray sources facilitates a variety of powder diffraction experiments not practical using conventional in-house sources. Furthermore, the increased availability of 2-dimensional area detectors, along with implementation of improved software and customized sample environmental cells, makes possible new classes of in-situ and time-resolved diffraction experiments. These include phase transitions under variable pressure- and temperature conditions and ion-exchange reactions. Examples of in-situ and time-resolved studies which are presented here include: (1) time-resolved data to evaluate the kinetics and mechanism of ion exchange in mineral natrolite; (2) in-situ dehydration and thermal expansion behaviors of ion-exchanged natrolite; and (3) observations of the phases forming under controlled hydrostatic pressure conditions in ion-exchanged natrolite. Both the quantity and quality of the in-situ diffraction data are such to allow evaluation of the reaction pathway and Rietveld analysis on selected dataset. These laboratory-based in-situ studies will increase the predictability of the follow-up experiments at more specialized beamlines at the synchrotron.

  • To develop the MFX (Micro-Focus X-ray) tube, the trajectories of electrons emitted from the field emission cathode was simulated using SIMION program. Regardless of starting position of the electron in emitter, we found out the fact that there is the optimum extractor voltage Ve, which can focus the electron beam on one place. Extractor voltage Ve varies depending on the source voltage Vs, but the ratio of two voltages (Ve/Vs) is always constant, its value was 99.4%. When the ratio of two voltages (Ve/Vs) was 99.4%, the beam diameter in the cross-over point was $1.2{\mu}m$. Because the focal spot size in MFXG (Micro-Focus X-ray Generator) can not be less than the cross-over diameter within MFX tube, it is important to find out the conditions that can make a smaller beam diameter. Therefore, the above results is considered to be a very important ones in the development of the MFXG.

  • In this paper, we develop a measurement system that uses 3D Scintillator and NaI(TI) Detector to 3-dimensionally identify the location of multiple radiation sources in moving vehicle loads. The radiation measurement system consists of radiation measurement (plastic scintillator), 2-channel Pulse Counter Board, nuclide analysis (NaI(TI) detector) and 1 channel MCA Board. The source locator algorithm calculates the coordinate value of the ratio of the CPS value($1/r^2$) of the source according to the angle(${\theta}$) in inverse proportion to the square of the distance(X, Y) through the SVM classification. The coordinate values are input every predetermined period of the spectrum, and after analyzing the spectrum per unit cycle, the position of the nuclide at the time is calculated by determining whether or not the nuclide is present in the remaining part except for the background area. As a result of the position discrimination test, the error within the international standard of ${\pm}1m$ was shown. Thus, the utility of the proposed system has been demonstrated.
