Effect of Bee venom-Acupuncture Therapy on Patients with Sprain of the Wrist Joint (수근관절(手根關節) 염좌(捻挫)의 봉약침(峰藥鍼) 치료(治療) 효과(效果))

  • Objective : This study was to evaluate the effect of Bee venom-Acupuncture therapy on patients with sprain of the wrist. Methods : We investigated 31 cases of patients with sprain of the wrist. We flip a coin and divide patients into two groups. Bee venom-Acupuncture was performed at on group, and the other group we didn't do it. We evaluated the treatment effect of each group by using the visual analog scale(VAS). Results : 1. As a result of evaluation by using the VAS, the score after treatment was marked lower than that before treatment within each group. 2. After treatment, Bee venom-Acupuncture therapy group showed significant difference on visual analog scale(VAS) compared with acupuncture therapy group. Conclusion : These results suggested that Bee venom-Acupuncture treatment should be more effective in the patient with sprain of the Wrist joint.

Ashi Points-acupuncture for Wrist Sprain (수근관절염좌 환자에 대한 아시혈 치료)

  • Sprain is the injury of meridian-muscle, and is caused by qi and blood obstruction or regional stagnation of qi and blood. So we take the channel points where pain flows. If we take the locations that feel pain, those locations are treatments points and ashi points. So we searched over the ashi points appearing on the patients with wrist sprain. Ashi points appeared on LI5, TE4, SI5 around wrist joints, LI10, LI11, LU6 around elbow joints, LI14, LU3, LU4, PC2 around upper arm. Also, ashi points appeared much on ST17, KI23, PC1, SP18, ST18 around thoracic region, and, on BL15, BL44, BL13 around anterior and thoracodorsal region, in order stated. Ashi points of the highest frequency appeared on LI14 around upper arm, and on LI5, TE4 around wrist joint, and SI5, ST17, KI12, PC1, SP18 appeared with second highest frequency. And ashi points on elbow points and thoracodorsal region appeared with the same frequency. Therefore, it is possible for us to know that the pain location appears in order of upper arm, anterior thoracic region, elbow joint region, and, thoracodorsal region, in treating wrist joints. There was a tendency that pain and movement disturbance recovered more quickly, depending on the pain reduction, as we found out the ashi points closely from stagnated qi and blood caused by wrist arthritis, and relaxed the stiff location. Rubbing treatments in treating pain ashi points is considered to play an important role to reduce pain effectively, so it is necessary to make a further study.

Research trend of Korean Medicine for Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Hand and Wrist (국내 의료기관에서 시행된 손/손목 근골격계 질환의 한방치료 연구동향)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the research trend of Korean traditional medicine for musculoskeletal disorders related to wrist and hand under Korean healthcare facilities. Methods We collected data from search engines for research including foreign and domestic online database using the keywords ligament tendon, wrist sprain, tendinitis, trigger finger, carpal tunnel, ganglion cyst, de Quervain's and Raynaud. Results A total of 45 articles were about ligament tendon, wrist sprain, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglion cyst, de Quervain's tenosynovitis and Raynaud disease. Out of 45 articles, 20 articles were about carpal tunnel syndrome and the most commonly used measurement was visual analog scale. Conclusions This study shows the research trend of musculoskeletal disorders related with the wrist and hand. Through the collected data, the treatment methods and specific information of treatments were organized. This study can be used in clinical environments and will contribute for further study in musculoskeletal disorders related with the wrist and hand.

A Clinical Study on the Effects of Acupuncture at Sang-Baek for Patients with Sprain of the Wrist Joint (양계혈(陽谿穴) 부위 통증을 호소하는 수근관절 염좌 환자에 대한 상백혈(上白穴) 자침(刺鍼) 효과에 대한 임상적 연구)

  • Objectives : This study was to evaluate the effects of acupuncture at Sang-Baek, Dong-Si acupuncture point, for the patients with sprain of the wrist pain(snuffbox region). Methods : To randomize, We tossed a coin, so 36 patients were divided into two. Group A of 19 persons was treated with common acupuncture treatment, and Group B of 17 persons was treated with acupuncture of Sang-Baek. We evaluated the treatment effect of each group by Visual Analogue Scale and Modified Mayo Wrist Score. Results : After 7days from the baseline, in VAS, Group A is $4.84{\pm}1.80$ and Group B is $3.35{\pm}2.06(P=0.038)$. In Wrist Score, Group A is $26.47{\pm}18.70$ and Group B is $44.64{\pm}27.76(P=0.034)$ Conclusion : We knew that acupuncture of Sang-Baek is more effective.

Analysis of the Sports Injury in the Taekwondo Matches (태권도 경기 중 스포츠 손상에 대한 분석)

  • The Taekwondo being a martial sports, there are higher chances for the injury to occur than the non martial sports. Therefore, this study analyze the frequency, the area, the type, and the condition of the injury which are prone to occur in the Taekwondo matches; it is to help the Taekwondo players in prevention of the injury and in treatment. The subjects of this study were the 48 players (male 24, female 24) who participated in the final selection contest of the national team player on March 9 to 12, 1993. The data of the injury were obtained from the medical recoder staff and were analyzed to the frequency of the injury per match, the vulnerable area of the injury, the type of injury, and the condition of the injury with a gender difference. There were 24 matches for the male and 24 matches for the female, total 48 matches. Therefore, the total participation number of the players are the double of the match number. 1. The frequency of the injury per match was 18.3%(11/60) for male and 23.1%(12/52) for women. 2. The areas of the injury were ankle 36.4%(4), foot 18.2%(2), knee 18.2%(2), lower leg 18.2%(2), wrist 9.1%(1) in male; foot 33.4%(4), ankle 16.7%(2), knee 16.7%(2), lower back 16.7%(2), lower leg 8.3%(1), face 8.3%(1) in female. 3. The types of the injury were contusion 45.5%(5), sprain 27.3%(3), abrasion 9.1%(1), laceration 9.1%(1), tendon rupture 9.1%(1) in male; contusion 33.3%(4), sprain 33.3%(4), abrasion 16.7%(2), subcutaneous hemorrhage 8.3%(1), dislocation 8.3%(1) in female. 4. The condition of the injury were the unblocked attack 36.4%(4), attacking kick 27.3%(3), blocking a kick 18.2%(2), attacking punch 9.1%, impact with surface 9.1%(1) in male; attacking kick 33.3%(4), unblocked attack 25%(3), blocking a kick 25%(3), attacking punch 8.3%(1), impact with surface 8.3%(1) in female. This study shows that the injury from the Taekwondo matches occurred most in the lower extremity joints and the foot, and shows that the most of the injury types were contusion and sprain. Therefore, it is believed to be helpful to wear the proper fitting ankle or the knee protector and using other protective equipment to prevent the sports injury in the Taekwondo matches.

Clinical Study on East-West Combination Treatment in Joint Disorders (관절.류마티스 질환의 한.양방 협진에 관한 임상적 고찰)

  • Objectives : To evaluate the current status of East-West combination treatment in joint disorders. Methods : The medical records of patients who visited the Joints & Rheumatism Center at the Kyung Hee East-West Neo Medical Center from April 2006 to June 2009 were evaluated. The general characteristics of patients who underwent combination treatment, trend in number of cross-system referrals, and disorders and involved body regions of patients referred to the Eastern medical hospital from the Western medical hospital were initially assessed. 6 major disorders were found from the initial scanning. The trend in number of cross-hospital referrals, number of visits to the Eastern medical hospital, current status of combination treatment, treatment modality, and reason for cross-system referral was evaluated. Results : 1. 1510 patients were referred from the Eastern medical hospital to the Western medical hospital, and 1065 patients were referred from the Western medical hospital to the Eastern medical hospital. First visit patients reached a peak at the second quarter of 2007 and fourth quarter of 2006 respectively, and have steadily decreased from then on. Referrals of female patients were twice as common as male patient referrals. Patients in their sixth or seventh decade of life were most commonly referred, and more outpatients were referred compared to inpatients. 2. Patients with knee joint disorders were most commonly referred from the Western medical hospital to the Eastern medical hospital, followed by hip, shoulder, ankle, wrist, and elbow joint disorders. The most common disorders for each of the above regions in referred patients were knee osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis of the hip, adhesive capsulitis, and ankle strain and sprain. The generalized disorders rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis followed. 3. Patients referred to the Eastern hospital received approximately 3 to 10 Eastern medical treatment sessions. 45 percent remained on constant combination treatment, and 98 percent of referred patients received acupuncture treatment. Conclusions : In regard to the number of patients and duration of combination treatment, combination treatment was successfully performed for knee osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, while it was not so for avascular necrosis of the hip, adhesive capsulitis, and ankle strain and sprain. Further research on this subject is required.

Injuries and Prevention methods Associated with In-Line Skate (인라인 스케이트시 발생한 손상 밑 예방)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe causes and injury mechanisms during inline skating and to find preventive measures .Materials and Methods: We have carefully selected 57 patients who have been treated in our hospital and nearby hospital. There are 37 males and 20 females, and mean age is 9 years 9 months (range,6-40 years old) . We have meticulously investigated their injured sites, their favorite location for inline skating , their use of protective means while they were on the wheels and their injury mechanisms . Results: Injury consisted of 50 fractures,1 meniscal tear,2 medial collateral ligament rupture and 4 contusion or sprain. Fracture sites varied as follows : 33(66$\%$) cases in distal radius and ulna,5(10$\%$) in elbow. 3(6$\%$) in diaphysis of humerus, etc Location at the time of injury varied as follows : 22 cases(39$\%$) in their apartment complex, 19 cases in (33$\%$) narrow streets, and 16 cases(28$\%$) in parks Only five patients admitted that any means of protection were used.2 cases only had knee pad on , 1 case put on elbow pad in addition, and 2 cases put on wrist guard as well. However none of the patients had helmet on Conclusion: We would strongly like to stress the importance of using sufficient protections and of choosing area where it is safe to ride, in order to reduce the risk of accidents. In addition, continuous and effective prior education from inline skate circles may be in order before riding the inline skate.
