  • Coal-tar enamel, blown asphalt and polyethylene have been used as wrapping materials of steel pipe in Korea. Currently, every manufacturer produces wrapped steel pipes with different materials and methods, and little research has been performed to get on wrapping methods and materials. In this research, properties of wrapping material of steel pipe used for water supply have been evaluated. All of the materials tested in this work were found to meet the standard. Among the wrapping materials of steel pipe tested, blown asphalt and coal-tar enamel were reasonable in price, and their mechanical properties were excellent. The quality of the wrapped steel pipes was being melted easily in organic solvent. When coated thick, the load of the steel pipes was higher than necessary. Tensile strength of cathode exfoliation and PE 3-layer wrapping method was excellent. The pulling intensity of T-Die PE 3-layer was stronger than PE fluidized in PE wrapping method. Cathode exfoliation area was smaller than PE fluidized. Mechanical property and thermo-property of T-Die PE 3-layer were excellent and its anti-chemical property was great. Liquid epoxy can change the property of coating materials depending on the hardening condition and resin selection. Polyurethane used in this test showed a less adhesive strength with steel pipes than epoxy. Moisture absorbance rate was higher than Epoxy's, however. To utilize polyurethane as wrapping materials, basic property of the matter should be improved followed by finding the best suited coating condition. The method of PE 3-layer by extrude method appeared to be the best in this study. However, identification of other wrapping materials requires further additional tests.

  • The welded connection is known as an essential factor for establishing qualified construction and/or maintenance of wrapped steel pipe. In this study, welded connection conditions in the coated pipes with large diameter (over 700 mm) in Korea water distribution systems were estimated for suggesting technically and economically available welded connection method. For the study analysis, current steel pipe usage and accident cases were investigated. In addition, the characteristics of each welded connection method and automatic or manual connection techniques were also compared and estimated. As results, automatic welded connection method is superior than manual welded connection method in aspect of pure construction cost (average 9%) or pure welded connection cost (average 13.5%). When the poor welding-working situations in Korea are considered such as high tolerance of out-of-roundness in KS regulation, a number of lap joint welded connections, the real cost benefits of automatic welded connection should be much higher than those of manual welded connections.

  • This paper investigates the reliability of district heating pipes at thermo-elastic fatigue loading. District heating pipes, subjected to $120^{\circ}C$ and $16kg_f/cm^2$ due to water distributing service through inside the pipes, should endure long term cyclic thermal-mechanical loadings. The heating pipes are the co-centric tubes of steel pipe, poly urethane(PUR) insulator, and high density poly ethylene(HDPE) case. On installation, foam pad is externally wrapped for accommodating stress reduction near the bend sections of pipes. However, there have been frequent reports on the failures of bend sections in the middle of long term service. This study scrutinizes the observed failures near the bend sections through applying the finite element methods. Specially in this study, heating pipes are studied on the influence of foam padding on failures and proposed new designs for reinforced bend without foam pad.

  • This paper describes field installation and load test results performed for three types of micropiles in the process of developing a new micropiling method. Field tests were performed for two conventional types(i.e., micropile reinforced with steel bar and gravity grouting, micropile reinforced with steel bar and steel casing and gravity grouting) and a proposed type(i.e., micropile reinforced with hollow steel pipe wrapped with geotextile-pack and pressurized grouting). The load test results subjected to axial compression and tension and lateral loading conditions are described in this paper. The micropiles were exposed in the air in order to verify the installation quality and curing condition of grouting material via ground excavation. Axial compression and tension test results indicate that the new micropile type provide at least 40% higher bearing capacity than that of conventional types. Based on the examination of exposed piles, it is induced that the proposed method, packed micropile, provides better interlocking between grouts and surrounding soils and increases higher frictional resistance comparing to conventional types.

  • This paper presents the analysis result of load-transfer mechanism and pile movements associated with the development of frictional resistance to understand the engineering characteristics of micropile behavior. An field load tests were performed for two different types of micropiles and they are (i) thread bar reinforcement with D=50mm and (ii) hollow steel pipe reinforcement with $D_{out}$=82.5mm and $D_{in}$=60.5mm and wrapped with woven geotextile for post-grouting. The load test results indicated that micropiling with pressured grouting provided better load-transfer characteristics than micropiling with gravity grouting under both compressive and tensile loading conditions in that unit skin frictional resistance is well distributed along installation depth. The unit weight and unconfined compressive strength of cured grout were obtained for each piling method. The strength and unit weight of micropile with pressured grouting was higher than those with gravity grouting. The fact that load bearing quality with pressured grouting is better than that of gravity grouting could be attributed to the dense mutual adhesion between surrounding ground and pile due to pressurized grouting method and better grout quality.

  • In this study, The failure of water supply facilities is categorized into two phases: functional failure and complete collapse. The fragility curve of water supply facilities under PGA has been developed for two loading cases: actual overseas earthquake and Korean artificial earthquake. The seismic fragility of water supply facilities has been analyzed and compared about failure phases and PGA. From the analysis results, the probability of failure of the wrapped steel pipe and ductile case iron pipe under Korean artificial earthquake has been shown as lower than that under actual overseas earthquake in the range from 0.1 to 0.4. The suggested seismic fragility curve by using Korean artificial earthquake can be exploited in a reasonable seismic design reflecting Korean local ground condition.
