  • The mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of through-the-thickness stitched plain weave glass fabric/polyurethane foam/epoxy composites were studied. Hybrid composites were fabricated using resin infusion process (RIP). Stitched sandwich composite increased drastically the flexural properties as compared with the unstitched fabrics. The breaking of stitching yarns was observed during the flexural test and this failure mode yielded relatively high flexural properties. Composites with stitched sandwich structure improved the mechanical properties with increasing the number of stitching yarns. From this study, it was concluded that proper combination of stitching density and types of stitching fiber is important factor for through-the-thickness stitched composite panels.

  • The mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated for CFRP laminates with different types of nonwoven tissues and the source of increased mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was examined by SEM analysis in this paper. The interlaminar fracture toughness in mode II is obtained by an end notched flexure test. The experiment is performed using three types of non-woven tissues: 8 $g/m^2$ of carbon tissue, 10 $g/m^2$ of glass tissue, and 8 $g/m^2$ of polyester tissue. On the basis of the specimen with no non-woven tissue, interlaminar fracture toughness on mode II at specimens inserted with non-woven carbon and glass tissues and polyester tissues increases as much as 166.5% and 137.1% and 157.4% respectively. The results show that mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP laminates inserted with nonwoven tissues increased due to the fiber bridging, fiber breakage, and hackle etc. by SEM analysis.

  • Nacre of abalone shell features a "brick-and-mortar" microstructure, in which micro-plates of calcium carbonate are bonded by nanometers-thick layers of chitin and proteins. Due to the microstructure and its unique toughening mechanisms, nacre possesses an excellent combination of specific strength, stiffness and toughness. This study deals with the possibility of using nacre fragments obtained from abalone shell for making a bulletproof armor system. A composite plate laminated with abalone shell fragments is made and compression and bend tests are carried out. In addition, a bulletproof test is performed with hybrid armor systems which are composed of an alumina plate, a composite plate, and aramid woven fabric to verify the ballistic performance of nacre. The compressive strength of the composite plate is around 258.3 MPa. The bend strength and modulus of the composite plate decrease according to the plate thickness and are about 149.2 MPa and 50.3 GPa, respectively, for a 4.85 mm thick plate. The hybrid armor system with a planar density of $45.2kg/m^2$, which is composed of an 8 mm thick alumina plate, a 2.4 mm thick composite plate, and 18 layers of aramid woven fabric, satisfy the NIJ Standard 0101.06 : 2008 Armor Type IV. These results show that a composite plate laminated with abalone shell fragments can be used for a bulletproof armor system as an interlayer between ceramic and fabric to decrease the armor system's weight.

  • This paper presents the results of static crushing test that was conducted to characterize the energy absorption and collapse characteristics of composite box tubes. Fifteen specimens were fabricated with woven fabric prepreg using [0/90] glass/epoxy and were autoclave cured. Quasistatic compression test was performed on them. Collapse mode and energy absorption capacity vary significantly as a function of the thickness and length of a square side of composite box tube.

  • Membrane structures which can be used large spatial structure are being expanded because of various advantages. However, despite the diverse membrane structure buildings and materials, the standard for membrane material performance that considering fire safety is still inadequate. Therefore, this study applied basalt or glass woven fabric with flame resistance on architectural membrane, and report the fire safety for architectural membrane using the strength properties, flammability and incombustibility. From the test result, the architectural membrane using basalt or glass woven fabric showed a low heat release rate and total heat release. Therefore, it was confirmed that the fire safety is relatively high.

  • Adherend samples were made from unsaturated polyester and woven and mat glass fibers by the hand layup and vacuum methods. The mechanical properties of the adhesive, composite adherends, and terminal-joint and secondary-joint specimens were determined experimentally. Combinations of the experiment results and the bonding theory were used in this study. The maximum and average shear stresses were calculated based on the maximum tensile force and geometry parameters of the joint specimens. The results of the maximum and average shear stresses were compared and evaluated for six joints. The results showed that the grinding and grind/acetone joint had the highest strength among three types of terminal-joints. Similarly, the mat-mat and mat-woven joints had the highest strength among three types of secondary-joints with the same value. Conversely, no treatment and woven-woven bonding had very low strength. In each case, failure occurred always at two ends and then moved toward the middle area of the overlap length.

  • The mechanical strength and crack propagation of plain woven carbon fiber fabric laminate composites are examined by acoustic emission(AE). AE signals are measured during the tensile test and fracture tests. Thus, the relationship between AE signal and load-displacement curves and crack extension length are shown. Also the fracture mechanisms in terms of AE characteristics are discussed in viewpoint of crack propagation behavior.

  • This study is experimentally performed to evaluate the strength reduction behavior and its statistical properties of plain woven glass/epoxy composites. The results indicate that the major impact damage of plain woven glass/epoxy composites is the fiber breakage and matrix crack, whereas the dominant impact damage of unidirectional carbon/epoxy laminates is the delamination, which depends on the stacking sequence. The residual strength prediction models, previously proposed on unidirectional laminates, are applied to evaluate the residual strength of plain woven glass/epoxy composites with impact damage. Among these models, the results by Caprino and Avva's model have a good agreement with the experimental results. To investigate the variability of residual strength of the impacted composite materials, a statistical model was proposed and its results were in conformance with the experimental results regardless of their thickness.
