Workplace Violence and Safety Issues in Long-Term Medical Care Facilities: Nurses' Perspectives

  • Background: Workplace violence (WPV) is becoming an issue that needs immediate attention in the United States, especially during this period as more states are adopting the "stand your ground laws to promote worker protection." This study was conducted to investigate how WPV has contributed to an unsafe environment for nurses and nursing assistants who work in long-term medical care facilities. Methods: A structure questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Three facilities were sampled and 80 nurses and certified nursing assistants participated in the study. Ninety-two percent (n = 74) were female and 8% (n = 6) were male. Approximately 62% were black or African American, approximately 33% were Caucasians, and only 2% were from other ethnicities. Results: We found that 65% of the participants had experienced WPV while 41% believed that management shows little or no concern for their safety. Approximately 23% of respondents believed that reporting supervisor's WPV act is an unsafe action. In addition, 22% of those who reported that they have experienced WPV believed that the work environment is not safe to perform their duties. This significant difference in perception of workplace safety between those who had experienced WPV and those who had not was significant (t = 3.95, df = 158, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: WPV is an epidemic problem that affects all health-care professionals. The findings of this study could help long-term medical care facilities' management identify the areas to focus on mitigating, controlling, and/or eliminating incidents of WPV.

종합병원 신규 간호사의 태움 경험 (Experiences of Workplace Bullying among New Nurses in General Hospitals)

  • 본 연구는 임상 간호 현장에서 종합병원 신규 간호사의 태움 경험을 이해하고 이를 토대로 우리나라의 간호 환경 개선 및 태움에 대한 대책 마련을 위한 조직적 차원에서의 제도적 장치를 마련하는데 기초 자료를 제공하고자 시도되었다. 본 연구는 현상학적인 방법을 사용하였고 자료 수집은 심층 면담으로 진행하였다. 자료 수집 기간은 2019년 9월부터 12월까지였으며 연구 참여자는 임상 간호 현장에서 태움을 경험한 신규 간호사 7명이었다. 연구 결과 신규 간호사의 태움 경험은 3개의 주제와 7개의 범주로 도출되었다. 3개의 주제는 '태움으로부터 의연해 지기 위하여 도피처를 찾아해맴', ' 모든 사람들로부터 갑질을 당함', ' 정신적, 신체적으로 병들어감'이었다. 본 연구를 통하여 종합병원 신규 간호사들의 태움에 영향을 주는 요인을 규명하고 실무 현장에서 이들이 전문직 간호사로 성장할 수 있는 방법에 대한 모색이 필요하다 하겠다.

The Influence of Bullying on Burnout through Workaholism and Perceived Organizational Support

  • Purpose - This study examined workplace bullying as a situational antecedent of workaholism and burnout as a consequence of workaholism and explored the mediating role of workaholism and the moderation effect of perceived organizational support. Research design, data, and methodology - This study collected data from 319 employees in South Korean companies through a survey method. Results - First, job-related bullying promotes a compulsive and excessive drive to work. However, person-related bullying was positively related to the tendency to work excessively hard. Second, only working excessively shows positive relationship with only exhaustion excepting cynicism. Third, although bullied employees may reserve their personal resources through workaholism in short time, it drives them to be workaholic, which leads them exhausted in turn. Finally, perceived organizational support decreases the effect of job-related bulling on both of working compulsively and working excessively. Conclusions - First, this study suggests workplace bullying as a situational antecedent and verify burnout as a consequence of workaholism. Second, it investigate the mediating role of workaholism and the moderation effect of perceived organizational support. Practically, When they find workaholic employees, they should investigate if workplace bullying exists through face-to-face talk. If necessary, they should decide personal transfer to the other department or work team.

The Impact of Self-Efficacy on Nurses' Well-Being: Does Digital Competence Matter?

  • Purpose: Drawing on person-environment fit theory and social cognitive theory, this study aimed to examine how self-efficacy affects nurses' workplace well-being via person-job fit and the moderating role of digital competence. Methods: A two-wave survey was conducted to collect data. Data were collected from six hundred and ninety-five nurses at three Chinese hospitals between May 2022 and September 2022. We employed hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrapping to analyze the data. Results: Self-efficacy positively influenced person-job fit (β = .55, p < .001), which positively affected nurses' workplace well-being (β= .32, p < .001). Person-job fit mediated the effect of self-efficacy on nurses' workplace well-being. Additionally, digital competence strengthened the positive impact of self-efficacy on person-job fit (β = .12, p < .001). Conclusion: Recruiting nurses with both self-efficacy and digital competence benefits hospitals. It is critical for nurses to improve their digital competence for achieving person-job fit and attaining workplace well-being in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era.

'직장 내 괴롭힘 방지법' 교육을 이수한 간호사의 직장 내 괴롭힘과 직무스트레스 관계에서 간호조직문화의 매개효과 (The Mediating Effects in the Relationship among Workplace Bullying, Job Stress, and Nursing Organizational Culture after completing the course of 'Workplace Bullying Prevention Law')

  • 본 연구는 직장 내 괴롭힘 방지법 교육 후 간호사의 간호조직문화, 직장 내 괴롭힘. 직무스트레스 정도 변화를 확인하고 간호사의 직장 내 괴롭힘과 직무스트레스에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 간호조직문화의 매개효과를 알아보고자 시도된 서술적 상관관계 연구이다. 대상자는 경기도에 소재한 대학병원 간호사 130명에게 설문조사를 실시하였고, 자료분석은 SPSS 23.0 프로그램으로 분석하였다. 간호사의 간호조직문화는 평균 2.99±.74이었으며, 직장 내 괴롭힘은 평균 1.85±.65 이었으며, 직무스트레스는 평균 2.50±.35로 나타났다. 간호사의 간호조직문화는 직장 내 괴롭힘(r=-.45, p=.001), 직무스트레스(r=-.61, p=001)와 부적 상관관계를 나타났으며, 직장 내 괴롭힘은 직무스트레스(r=.42, p=.001)와 정적 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 매개효과를 확인하기 위하여 Sobel test를 실시하였고, 간호사의 직장 내 괴롭힘이 직무스트레스에 미치는 영향에서 간호조직문화는 .13의 부분 매개로 통계적으로 유의미하였다(sobel'z=-2.287, p<.05). 따라서 직장 내 괴롭힘을 감소시키기 위해 관계지향적 간호조직문화와 혁신지향적 간호조직 문화를 형성하는 것이 필요하고 직무스트레스를 감소시킬 수 있는 간호근무환경과 간호업무 간의 관련된 조직문화의 이해를 높이는 것이 중요하며 병원조직에서도 예방교육에 대한 제도적인 교육전략이 필요하겠다.

지하철 근로자의 직장 내 폭력과 정신건강과의 관련성에 대한 융복합 연구 (Convergence Study on Relationship between Workplace Violence and Mental Health for Subway Workers)

  • 본 연구는 서울시 소재 지하철 근로자 876명을 대상으로 직장 내 폭력경험 실태를 파악하고, 직장 내 폭력과 정신건강과의 관련성을 파악하고자 실시하였다. 자료수집은 구조화된 설문지로 웹 사이트에서 하였고, 자료분석은 SPSS 20.0 통계프로그램을 이용하여 다중선형회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 직장 내 폭력경험 실태에서 신체적 폭력, 언어적 폭력, 성희롱 및 인격무시 모두에서 폭력의 주체가 '고객'으로 나타났다. 직장 내 폭력과 정신건강과의 관련성에서는 직장 내 폭력유형인 신체적 폭력, 언어적 폭력, 성희롱 및 인격무시 모두에서 정신건강의 하위영역과 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 직장 내 폭력이 정신건강에 미치는 영향에서는 신체적 폭력, 성희롱 및 인격무시에서 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 설명력은 8.3%이었다. 본 연구는 지하철 근로자를 대상으로 직장 내폭력 경험 실태를 파악한 것과 정신건강에 미치는 영향을 통계분석을 통하여 이들 간의 관계를 분석하였다는데 의의가 있다. 향후 지하철 근로자의 직장 내 폭력을 예방할 수 있는 고객응대 가이드라인 마련과 근무환경에 맞는 구체적인 폭력예방대책을 마련하여 적용할 것을 제안한다.

The Research about Role Area of RT in Digital Environment - Centers on PACS Workplace -

  • Now a days in our society, occupation boundaries have become blurred, and come into the limelight in the prior occupation or miss about new workplace. Medical area is no exception also, So we face urgent problem about protecting and spreading RT work-sphere simultaneously. This research allow to identify on RT role area of digital environment that is obscure profession-realm specially, and open up a new field hereafter. We examined present RT role area of digital environment in the more than thirty medical facility(general or university hospital) through questionnaire/visit survey from PACS administrator. Survey sentence comprises total 29 sentence over all main quadrisection-(eX. hospital formation & treatment state and PACS team composition & organization and PACS team workplace and PACS team daily workload), We performed comparative analysis in general contents perspectively. further more, divided main 5 section based on upper analysis and then manufactured output in consideration of each medical facility's operation state. There are comparative problem of hospital policy, So we maintained information security of each facility exhaustively. First, we separated a survey output into main 5 section as follows-(eX. PACS server & maintenance manage, Client/interlock manage, PACS data conversion, 3D reconstruction, PACS data im/export)-that received by 35 medical facility. And then manufactured output with comparative analysis about RT role area each section, general IT managing team about medical environment was out of existence that fill up with RT manpower in the surveyed medical facility consequently. What is worse, hospitals that entirely fill up with another worker were 3 place amazingly. Our specific statistic results show, the respondents was 63% that agree with reorganization of formation base on independence team, and supplement of the personnel average -continuous with upper agreement simply-was about 2.64. Further more, if reorganization break out with only RT manpower, quota TO will increase by geometric progression. Protecting and spreading role workplace is much accounted of the our inevitable project surely and more than 95% PACS administrator's have confidence in this proposition unconditionally. Henceforth, look forward to meeting the RT vision of many-sided multiplayer, based on acquire a specialized IT knowledge actively and open up a new work-field with frontier spirit.

  • By the effect of globalism and information the workplace environment is complicated and diversified little by little. The job stress due to the life style, the idea and culture, and the automated facility system etc. is to a tendency which compared to increase more. It will not be able to prevent a industrial accident basically because the oriental and western life style is different. Therefore this paper presents the Korean life change unit model through statistical testing in order to minimize industrial accident with the proposed life change unit factors on the workers living In the middle area. Finally, the analytical result of this paper can be easily used in order to minimize the industrial accidents by the job stress with the worker and the occupational safety & health manager in real fields.

Ergonomics of Office Seating and Postures

  • Objective: This research focuses on the working environment of office workers and aims to propose an ideal seating posture and chair design. Background: Generally, office workers having to seat in a fixed posture for long periods of time tend to suffer from an increased rate of musculoskeletal disorders. Method: The measurement and survey of 123 office workers on their working conditions and literature survey will lead to a suggestion of an ideal seating posture and workstation design theory. Results: Work environment satisfaction appeared low for chair and desks. Work-related pain over the last year was experienced among 47.2% of the respondents in shoulder (34.2%), neck (30.9%). Observation of working posture revealed that only 27.6% of workers utilize backrest during work. Conclusion: Office work embodies many situations where risks of musculoskeletal disorders may be high. Thus, the seated workplace must be set up to allow proper seating posture for workers. Application: The results of this study can be applied as baseline data for preventing musculoskeletal disorders of office workers.

농산물산지유통센터 작업장의 냉방 설계를 위한 CFD 시뮬레이션 적용 (Application of CFD Simulation to Cooling System Design of Agricultural Products Processing Center Workplace)

  • 수집 농산물의 세척, 선별, 포장 작업 등이 이루어지는 APC 작업장은 하절기에 작업자들이 고온의 환경에 노출되므로 작업환경 개선을 위한 냉방공조가 요구되고 있다. 기존의 전체 냉방 공조방식은 과도한 유지비로 인한 운용상의 어려움이 발생하고 있으므로 설비비 및 운용비가 상대적으로 저렴한 시스템을 적용할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 하절기 APC 작업공간의 효율적 냉방을 위한 냉방시스템 설계의 기초 연구로써 CFD를 기반으로 하여 양압식 및 음압식 팬 앤 패드 시스템과 국소냉방 시스템에 대해 열유동 수치해석을 수행하여 각각의 냉방효과를 예측하였다. 그 결과, 음압식 팬 앤 패드 시스템은 고온 외기의 과도한 유업으로 인해 패드 하류의 일부 영역을 제외한 대부분의 작업영역에서 상대적으로 고온의 온도 분포를 보였으며 기류의 유속분포 역시 낮게 나타나 APC 냉방시스템으로 부적합한 것으로 판단되었다. 양압식 팬 앤 패드 시스템은 직업장의 중심부 및 각 작업영역에 비교적 균일한 저온환경을 조성하나 작업자 위치별로 기류의 유속편차가 크게 나타났다. 국소냉방 시스템의 경우 각 작업자 위치의 상부에서 냉기류가 공급되는 방식이므로 팬 앤 패드 시스템에 비해 작업자 위치에서의 온도분포와 기류 유속분포가 상대적으로 균일하게 나타났다. 양압식 팬 앤 패드 시스템은 냉방기를 사용하는 기존의 공조방식에 비해 설비비 및 유지비가 저렴하나, 실제 APC 작업장의 냉방공조에 적용시에는 팬 소음, 고습환경이 선별기 등 장비에 미치는 영향, 용수공급 및 패드교체 등을 고려하여 보다 신중한 검토가 요구된다.
