Background: Shipbuilding involves intensive welding activities, and welders are exposed to a variety of metal fumes, including manganese, that may be associated with neurological impairments. This study aimed to characterize total and size-fractionated manganese exposure resulting from welding operations in shipbuilding work areas. Methods: In this study, we characterized manganese-containing particulates with an emphasis on total mass (n = 86, closed-face 37-mm cassette samplers) and particle size-selective mass concentrations (n = 86, 8-stage cascade impactor samplers), particle size distributions, and a comparison of exposure levels determined using personal cassette and impactor samplers. Results: Our results suggest that 67.4% of all samples were above the current American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists manganese threshold limit value of $100{\mu}g/m^3$ as inhalable mass. Furthermore, most of the particles containing manganese in the welding process were of the size of respirable particulates, and 90.7% of all samples exceeded the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists threshold limit value of $20{\mu}g/m^3$ for respirable manganese. Conclusion: The concentrations measured with the two sampler types (cassette: total mass; impactor: inhalable mass) were significantly correlated (r = 0.964, p < 0.001), but the total concentration obtained using cassette samplers was lower than the inhalable concentration of impactor samplers.

Fretting damage reduces fatigue life of the material due to low amplitude cyclic sliding and changes in the contact surfaces of strongly connected machine and structures such as bolt, key, fixed rivet and connected shaft, which have relative slip of repeatedly very low frequency amplitude. In this study, the fretting fatigue behavior of 7050-T7451 aluminum alloys used mainly in aircraft and automobile industry were evaluated. The plain fatigue test and fretting fatigue test under cyclic bending load carried out commercial bending fatigue tester and specially devised equipments to cause fretting damage. From these experimental work, the following results obtained: (1) The plain fatigue limit for stress ratio R=-l was about 151MPa. (2) In case of fretting fatigue, fatigue limit for stress ratio R=-l about 72MPa, the fatigue limit for R=0 about 81MPa, and the fatigue limit for R=0.3 about 93MPa. (3) The fatigue limit reduction rates by the fretting damage were about 52%(R=-1), 46%(R=0) and 38%(R=0.3) respectively. (4) The fatigue limit reduction rate decreased with stress ratio increase. In fretting bending test, as stress ratio increased, occurrence of initial oblique crack by fretting decreased or phased out, so that fracture surfaces were formed by plain fatigue crack occurrence, and such tendency was notable as stress amplitude increased. (5) Tire tracks and rubbed scars were observed in the fracture surface and contacted surface.

A laser beam expanding technique is employed to fabricate precise nano-patterns in a nano-replication printing (nRP) process. In the nRP process, some patterns can be fabricated in the range of several microns inside on a polymerizable resin by using a volume-pixel (voxel) matrix that is transformed from a two-tone bitmap figure file. The liquid monomers are polymerized by means of a two-photon-absorption (TPA) phenomenon that is induced by a femtosecond (fs)-pulse laser. The yokels are generated consecutively to merge into adjoining yokels in the process of fabricating a pattern. The resolution of a fabricated pattern can be obtained under the diffraction limit of a laser beam by the two-photon absorbed polymerization (TPP). In this work, a beam-expanding technique has been applied to enlarge a working area and to fabricate precise patterns. Through this work, a working area is expanded by the technique as much as 2.5 times compared with a case of without a beam expanding technique, and precision of outside patterns is improved.

This work presents a new method to deal with buckling constraints. The mathematical optimization process of truss structures proposed earlier by the author has been proved to be the most rigorous method. The inclusion of buckling constraints, however, gives rise to a new problem The allowable compression stress of a member changes from one design iteration to another. This changing stress limit creates a good deal of noise in selecting active constraints and makes the solution process unstable. This problem can be overcome by introducing relaxation parameters. This work, however, aims at establishing a more rigorous method by containing the allowable compression stress in the left hand side of the associated constraint.

In this study, focusing on work types of lifting modules and modules assembly in modular construction sites, unit works were defined according to the construction process of each work type, and safety management elements, safety management activities, and key check point were proposed. The results of this study may have somewhat overlapping contents in the construction procedure in order to derive specific safety management activities and check point for each unit work. Therefore, there is a limit to use the results in an actual modular construction site. In future research, we plan to improve this part and derive a checklist that considers field usability.

Despite the significance of ports as critical economic infrastructure, the berth facilities usually deteriorate due to heavy loading, unloading, aging, environmental weather conditions, marine growths, and lack of efficient maintenance management. Marine berths require proactive maintenance management to limit deterioration and defects as no berth facility is maintenance-free. Thus, delay in carrying out maintenance work for the marine berths can be devastating to the operational process involving ship entry, loading, and unloading operations. The aim of this research is to coordinate both operations work, and maintenance works that take place inside the berth of a local industrial port in Saudi Arabia, by developing a novel framework that integrates both works without affecting the efficiency and functionality of the berth. The study focused on defining the operational process of the port and identifying the elements with direct and indirect effects. In addition to determining the priority for the entry of ships inside the berth, it also identified the factors involved in designing a framework that included maintenance work as a component of the monthly berth occupancy schedule. By applying a mathematical model, a framework was established, which includes all the important elements of the process. As a result of the mathematical method formulation process, a database was designed that organizes and coordinates the operations of all berths within the port. This creates time to carry out the required maintenance work monthly as well as ease of coordination with the contractors responsible for the implementation of those works.
In this work the stationary bootstrap of Politis and Romano [27] is applied to the empirical distribution function of stationary and associated random variables. A weak convergence theorem for the stationary bootstrap empirical processes of associated sequences is established with its limiting to a Gaussian process almost surely, conditionally on the stationary observations. The weak convergence result is proved by means of a random central limit theorem on geometrically distributed random block size of the stationary bootstrap procedure. As its statistical applications, stationary bootstrap quantiles and stationary bootstrap mean residual life process are discussed. Our results extend the existing ones of Peligrad [25] who dealt with the weak convergence of non-random blockwise empirical processes of associated sequences as well as of Shao and Yu [35] who obtained the weak convergence of the mean residual life process in reliability theory as an application of the association.
This paper aims to provide basic data for work environment control, prevention of worker exposure to asbestos and improvement of air quality to protect workers ‘health after measuring the level of airborne asbestos and workers' exposure in a shipbuilding repair businesses. For this study, a total of 27 samples were collected from 27 workers who had been exposed to asbestos during engine, piping, boiler and other manufacturing processes in 'A' Shipbuilding Repair Company in Gyeongnam. This research was conducted from Oct. 1 to 30, 2007 and had the following results: The target group (27 workers) consisted of all men with an average age of 35.9 years and 6.6 years of work on average. Among them, fifteen 15 (55.6%) were smokers. In terms of their duties at work, there were 12 plumbing repair engineers (44.4%), 8 boiler repair engineers (29.6%) and 7 engine engineers (25.9%). The geometric mean concentration of airborne asbestos was 0.004 f/cc. A total of 4 samples exceeded the exposure limit. In particular, three exceeded the legal limit by more than double, which means that some workers have been highly exposed to asbestos. In terms of the concentration of asbestos fibres by work process, plumbing repair was the highest (0.0071 f/cc($0.001{\sim}0.57\;f/cc$)) while boiler was the lowest (0.0015 f/cc($0.001{\sim}0.007\;f/cc$)). Based on this study, proper action needs to be taken as soon as possible to protect workers from the threat of asbestos.

Teaching an industrial robot is still a dangerous and time-consuming process. It is expected that a robot can track a trajectory that is repeatedly taught by a human operator. Teaching a robot in joint space is easier than that in Cartesian space or a work space because the robot will never lose its stability when it is taught and operated in a joint space. However, it is very easy for a robot to lose its stability when it is taught in a work space. This is because of the singular points problem in kinematics for manipulators. Thus, experts should teach a given task to a robot in a careful manner. A new algorithm that avoids the problem of singular points is proposed. Using this proposed method, a user can freely teach a robot without the chance of instability in an entire work space.

A FinFET, a novel double-gate device structure is capable of scaling well into the nanoelectronics regime. High-performance CMOS FinFETs , fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FDSOI) devices have been demonstrated down to 15 nm gate length and are relatively simple to fabricate, which can be scaled to gate length below 10 nm. In this paper, some of the key elements of these technologies are described including sub-lithographic pattering technology, raised source/drain for low series resistance, gate work-function engineering for threshold voltage adjustment as well as metal gate technology, channel roughness on carrier mobility, crystal orientation effect, reliability issues, process variation effects, and device scaling limit.
