This study was carried out in the teaching and research forest of the University of Dschang in Belabo, with the aim of analysing land-cover and land-use changes as well as carbon stocks dynamic. The databases used are composed of three Landsat satellite images (5TM of 1984, 7ETM + of 2000 and 8OLI of 2016), enhanced by field missions. Satellite images were processed using ENVI and ArcGIS software. Interview, focus group discussion methods and participatory mapping were used to identify the activities carried out by the local population. An inventory design consisting of four transects was used to measure dendrometric parameters and to identify land-use types. An estimation of carbon stocks in aboveground and underground woody biomass was made using allometric models based on non-destructive method. Dynamic of land-cover showed that the average annual rate of deforestation is 0.48%. The main activities at the base of this change are agriculture, house built-up and logging. Seven types of land-use were identified; adult secondary forests (64.10%), young secondary forests (7.54%), wetlands (7.39%), fallows (3.63%), savannahs (9.59%), cocoa farms (4.28%) and mixed crop farms (3.47%). Adult secondary forests had the highest amount of carbon ($250.75\;t\;C\;ha^{-1}$). This value has decreased by more than 60% for mixed crop farms ($94.67\;t\;C\;ha^{-1}$), showing the impact of agricultural activities on both forest cover and carbon stocks. Agroforestry systems that allow conservation and introduction of woody species should be encouraged as part of a participatory management strategy of this forest.

In this study, the gasification characteristics of four types of unused woody biomass and one waste wood in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed gasifier (Diameter: 0.11 m, Height: 0.42 m) were investigated. Effect of equivalence ratio (ER) of 0.15-0.3 and gas velocity of $2.5-5U_0/U_{mf}$ are determined at the constant temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ and fuel feeding rate of 1 kg/h. The silica sand particle having an average particle size of $287{\mu}m$ and olivine with an average particle size of $500{\mu}m$ were used as the bed material, respectively. The average product gas composition of samples is as follows; $H_2$ 3-4 vol.%, CO 15-16 vol.%, $CH_4$ 4 vol.% and $CO_2$ 18-19 vol.% with a lower heating value (LHV) of $1193-1301kcal/Nm^3$ and higher heating value (HHV) of $1262-1377kcal/Nm^3$. In addition, it was found that olivine reduced most of C2 components and increased $H_2$ content compared to silica sand, resulting in cracking reaction of tar. The non-condensable tar decreases by 72% ($1.24{\rightarrow}0.35g/Nm^3$) and the condensable tar decreases by 27% ($4.4{\rightarrow}3.2g/Nm^3$).
During the biomass gasification, tar generation is typically accompanied, which causes many problems, such as pipe plugging and equipment fouling. In the experiments, activated carbon was applied to the upper reactor of the two-stage gasifier in order to remove the tar generated during gasification. In addition, the effects of the upper-reactor temperature and equivalence ratio on the producer gas characteristics (composition, tar content and lower heating value) were investigated. To investigate the effect of the upper reactor-temperature, experiments were performed at 743, 793, $838^{\circ}C$, respectively. To examine the influence of the equivalence ratio, a comparison experiment was carried out at a equivalence ratio of 0.17. In all experiments, tar contents in the producer gases were below $2mg/Nm^3$. The maximum LHV of the producer gas was above $10MJ/Nm^3$, which is much higher than the typical LHV($3\sim6MJ/Nm^3$) in the air gasification of biomass.

Globally, there are more than 2600 species of termites which adapted plenty of terrestrial ecosystems by various strategies such as making termite nest and society. Various studies were recently carried out on termites because they play significant roles in the context of carbon (C) cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. According to the results of previous studies, termite activities influenced the amount of soil organic C, methane emission, and organic matter decomposition. Termite nests, where termite biomass was concentrated, exhibited 1.8 times higher soil organic C concentration than reference soils, and emitted $0.0-6.0kg\;ha^{-1}year^{-1}$ of methane in tropical forests and savannas. Feeding activity of termites, in addition, accelerated coarse woody debris (CWD) decomposition by increasing the surface area to volume ratio of CWD. Especially, CWD decomposition induced by the Rhinotermitidae family appeared to be significant for the C cycle in temperate forests. However, more studies should be conducted on termite-induced CWD decomposition in temperate forests because few studies have dealt with it. The termite-induced CWD decomposition could be measured by preparing disc-shaped CWD samples, excluding access of termites to the CWD samples, and comparing the decomposition rate of the CWD samples with and without the termite exclusion treatment. Studies on the termite-induced CWD decomposition would contribute to further elucidation of the C cycle in temperate forests.

In this study, bio-carbons were produced by activation process from unused biomass (Grade 3 wood pellet and spent coffee grounds) to determine the removal performance of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The activation experiments were conducted in a fixed bed reactor using CO2 as an activation agent. The temperature of the activation reactor and input of CO2 were 900 ℃ and 1 L min-1 for all the experiments. The maximum BET surface area of about 788 m2 g-1 was obtained for bio-carbon produced from Grade 1 wood pellet, whereas about 544 m2 g-1 was achieved with bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds. In all the experiments, the bio-carbons produced were mainly found to have micro-porous nature. A lower ash amount in raw material was favored for the high surface area of bio-carbons. In the removal test of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, the bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds showed excellent adsorption performance compared with woody biomass (Grade 1 wood pellet and Grade 3 wood pellet). In addition, the comparative experiment of commercial impregnated activated carbon and bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds was conducted. In terms of formaldehyde removal performance, the commercial impregnated bio-carbon was excellent, while bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds was excellent in acetaldehyde removal.
To construct the production system of forest biomass as a small scale heating energy source, energy availability of wood-chip was examined by cost and energy balance analysis in the production process. The costs to produce wood-chip of 1 kg was calculated by yarding machines and their operational gradient conditions. As a result, 195.45~210.54 won/kg were required as production costs of wood-chip. Input energy rate (%) which is output to input energy in wood-chip production process were showed as 26.58~27.38%. Energy input rate by operational gradient was not significantly difference, and scenario B with tower yarder system appeared by more efficient than scenario A with tractor yarding system in opposition to production costs analysis.
Steam explosion process is one of the most efficient, pretreatment method for the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. The carbxymethyl-cellulose(CMC) was prepared with steam exploded wood(EXW), pine(Pinus densiflora) and oak(Quercus mongolica), by standard method using isopropyl alcohol and monochloroacetic acid. The range of water solubility of carboxymethylated pine exploded wood was 45.2~66.8 % and those of oak was 60.7~84.7 %. The degree of substitution(D.S) of carboxymethylated pine exploded wood was 0.11~0.33 and oak exploded wood was 0.48~0.76. The color of carboxymethylated pine and oak exploded wood was brown-black. When carboxymethylated EXW was purified by sulfuric acid, the yield of carboxymethylated wood was lower than non-treated one. However, the color was still brown-black although after delignification. In carboxymethylated EXM prepared after delignification, the water solubility and degree of substitution(D.S) of pine were 81.4~95.9 % and 0.71~0.79, and those of oak were 76.2~89.5 % and 0.79~1.05. The values were higher than non-treated. The degree of substitution of purified carboxymethylated wood prepared with delignified EXM, pine and oak were 0.50~0.71 and 0.70~0.88. The color of carboxymethylated wood was white. In carboxymethylated wood preparde after delignification of EXM, swelling ratio and water retention value of pine were 95.9~96.5 and 580.0~751.2, those of oak were 76.2~89.5 and 124.3~307.6.
This study assessed the feasibility of iron oxide nanoparticles impregnated with biochar (INPBC), derived from woody biomass, as a stabilizing agent for the stabilization of farmland soil in the vicinity of an abandoned mine through pot experiments with 28 days of lettuce growth. The lettuce grown in the INPBC amended soils increased by more than 100% and the concentrations of inorganic elements (Cu, Ni, Zn) decreased by more than 40%. As, Cd and Pb were not transferred properly from the soils to the lettuce biomass. The bioavailability of arsenic and heavy metals in the INPBC amended soils were decreased by 26%~50%. It seems that the major mechanisms of stabilization were arsenic adsorption on iron oxides, heavy metal precipitation by soil pH increasing and heavy metal adsorption on organic matter. These results revealed that the lower bioavailability of the inorganic pollutants in the soils stabilized using INPBC induced lower transfer to the lettuce. Thus, INPBC could be used as an amendment material for the stabilization of farmland soils contaminated by arsenic and heavy metals. However, a pre-review of the chemical properties of the amended soil must be performed prior to applying INPBC in farmland soil because the concentration of the nutrients in the soil such as available phosphates and exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K) could be decreased due to adsorption on the surface of the iron oxides and organic matter.

The grassland section of the greenhouse gas inventory has limitations due to a lack of review and verification of biomass compared to organic carbon in soil while grassland is considered one of the carbon storages in terrestrial ecosystems. Considering the situation at internal and external where the calculation of greenhouse gas inventory is being upgraded to a method with higher scientific accuracy, research on standards and methods for calculating carbon accumulation of grassland biomass is required. The purpose of this study was to identify international trends in the calculation method of the grassland biomass sector that meets the Tier 2 method and to conduct a review of variables applicable to the Republic of Korea. Identify the estimation methods and access levels for grassland biomass through the National Inventory Report in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and type the main implications derived from overseas cases. And, a field survey was conducted on 28 grasslands in the Republic of Korea to analyse the applicability of major issues. Four major international issues regarding grassland biomass were identified. 1) country-specific coefficients by land use; 2) calculations on woody plants; 3) loss and recovery due to wildfire; 4) amount of change by human activities. As a result of field surveys and analysis of activity data available domestically, it was found that there was a significant difference in the amount of carbon in biomass according to use type classification and climate zone-soil type classification. Therefore, in order to create an inventory of grassland biomass at the Tier 2 level, a policy and institutional system for making activity data should develop country-specific coefficients for climate zones and soil types.
Steam explosion is one of the most effective pretreatment for fractionating wood. This leads to the total utilization of wood basic components; cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The amount of sugar and lignin extracted with the hot water method was very low. The lignin content of residues after extraction with using a sodium hydroxide treatment, increased delignification of carbohydrate as the concentration of alkali was increased. Oak, pretreated with steam exploded at 25kg/$cm^2$ for 6 min. then 1% alkali for 2hrs. showed a delignification rate up to 95%. A sodium chlorite treatment of steam exploded pine and oak also afforded a high deligninfication effect. Pine, treated 10% sodium chlorite for 2hrs. showed high delignification. However, by using a sodium hydroxide treatment, a 2% retreatment for Ihr. after a 2% for 2hrs. afforded remarkable delignification effect on exploded wood at 30kg/$cm^2$ for 9min. and at 35kg/$cm^2$ for 3-6min. In oak, an initial 2hrs. treatment of 2% sodium chlorite was followed by a second 2hrs. treatment at 10%. This showed a delignification rate of 96%.
