To reuse the waste bone from restaurants or butcher houses, the possibility of using waste bone powder after cooking as a filler for wood adhesives used in manufacturing plywood was investigated. Radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) plywoods were manufactured by using commonly used wood adhesives such as urea-melamine formaldehyde (UMF) resin, urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin, and phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin and the prepared fillers from cattle bone powder, pig bone powder, and seashell powder. Plywood fabricated by using cattle bone powder, pig bone powder, and seashell powder showed weaker performance in dry and wet glue-joint shear strength and wood failure than those of the plywood with wheat flour. The result showed that it was hard to use only bone powder for the replacement of wheat flour. However, the filler mixed with wheat flour and bone powders showed equivalent dry bonding strength and better water resistance than the wheat flour, indicating that bone powders mixed with wheat flour might be used for the manufacture of plywood. When bone powders were mixed with wheat flour as adhesive fillers the shell powder showed the lowest bonding properties and there was no big difference between the cattle bone powder and the pig bone powder.
In this study, we were manufactured wood flour-HDPE composites by modular co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. We was measured cone calorimeter test and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to find the combustion characteristics and thermal properties for wood flour-HDPE composites. We then evaluated the effect of three additive-type flame retardants on fire resistance performance. The cone calorimeter test showed that the heat release rate (HRR) of untreated composites was the highest Peak HRR ($446.6kW/m^2$) as well as Mean HRR ($185.5kW/m^2$). From the TGA, it was shown that composites added flame retardants began early thermal decomposition and improved thermal stability.
This study examined the thermal stability of PLA-WF bio-composites. Wood flour (WF)-filled PLA bio-composites were reinforced with the flame retardants, Melamine pyrophosphate (MPP), resorcinol bis (diphenyl phosphate) (RDP) and zinc borate (ZB). The flame retardant was compounded with PLA and natural biodegradable filler. The thermal properties of the biodegradable polymer and bio-composites reinforced with the flame retardant were measured and analyzed by DSC, DMA and TGA. The results showed that the flame retardant-reinforced biodegradable bio-composite exhibited improved thermal properties.
Wood plastic composite (WPC) is a green composite made of wood flour and thermoplastics to provide better performance by removing the defects of both wood and plastics. However, relatively low thermal stability and poor fire resistance of wood and plastics included in WPC have been still issues in using WPC as a building material for interior applications. This study investigated the effect of environmentally-friendly flame retardants (EFFRs) on the mechanical, thermal, morphological, and water absorption properties of wood flour (WF)/talc/polypropylene (PP) composites in comparison with neat PP. The whole EFFRs-filled WF/talc/PP composites showed higher values in flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength compared to neat PP. In thermal properties, aluminum hydroxide (AH)-filled composite showed a $36^{\circ}C$ reduction in maximum thermal decomposition temperature ($T_{max}$) compared to neat PP, but magnesium hydroxide (MH) played an important role in improving thermal stability of filled composite by showing the highest $T_{max}$. From this research, it can be said that MH has potentials in reinforcing PP-based WPCs with improvement of thermal stability.
Wood Polymer Composite (WPC) has attracted a great deal of attention in environmental industries due to renewable resources, processability, excellent physical properties and logging regulations for application to housing units and engineering construction materials. In this study, commercial WPCs were prepared by using a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder. The effect of three main factors such as wood flour contents, coupling agent concentrations and pre-treatment of wood flour on the properties of WPCs was extensively investigated. It was found that tensile strength and thermal stability were decreased with increasing wood flour contents whereas the water absorption was increased. Addition of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA) into WPC exhibited better physical properties. On the contrary, the water absorption was slightly decreased with PP-g-MA. Finally the sample, which was prepared with pre-treated wood flour, represented the highest tensile strength. However, the water absorption of the sample was increased due to the transition of crystalline structure of cellulose.
This study was carried out to investigate the promoting effect of wood flour on the mycelial growth of Lentinus lepideus and Lentinus edodes. To determine the optimal culture condition, we first examined the tissue origin of pine flour (Pinus densiflora) including needle, bark, root and xylem. Only the xylem-derived flour increased mycelial growth compared to no treatment control. The addition of the xylem flour (5 g/l) showed the highest increase and the glucose level in the basal medium was best at 10 g/l. The smaller particle size of the xylem flour showed the positive effect on mycelial growth; two-fold increase when supplemented with flour of which particle size is less than $106\;{\mu}m$ in diameter compared to $425\;{\mu}m$. The addition of the xylem flour continuously increased the mycelial production for 25 days while mycelia stopped growing within 15 days without the xylem flour. In addition, when woody flour obtained from the different tree species was applied to L. edodes mycelial culture, all treatments accelerated mycelial production compared to the control. Based on all results described above, we conclude that the supplementation of woody flour to culture medium may be an another promising way to increase mycelial production of economically important fungi.
In order to investigate the extending effects on urea-formaldehyde resin- or phenol- formal- dehyde resin- glued keruing plywood, hot pressing temperatures were controlled to 110, 140, 170 and $200^{\circ}C$. As the extender, wheat flour, persimmon bark powder, chestnut bark powder, the equivalently- extended with the above three powders, and diatomite powder were respectively mixed with 5, 10, 15 and 20% ratios to the resin liquid, and also with these the no- extended was allowed. Based on the measured bonding strength, the conclusions were drawn: 1. In the urea- formaldehyde resin, extending effects on the bonding strength were in the order of wheat flour, the equivalently- extended with the wheat flour, persimmon- and chestnut bark powder, persimmon bark powder, chestnut bark powder. In the phenol- formaldehyde resin, the effects in the order of wheat flour, persimmon bark powder, diatomite powder, chestnut bark powder were resulted in. Specifically, superior bonding strength to the no-extended were given with the wheat flour and persimmon bark powder. 2. On the whole, the bonding strength decreased gradually, as the hot pressing temperature increased except for the diatomite powder extending.
This study was carried out to know the adaptability of barley flour, potato flour and white ash as extender and filler of urea-formaldehyde resin for plywood as a substitute material of wheat flour. The extenders and filler used at this study were extended by several groups of percentages. Shear strength, moisture contents, and specific gravities were compared among tested groups. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) Wet and dry shear strength of plywoods extended by 10% barley flour, 30% potato flour, and wheat flours were shown better results than non extended plywoods. 2) There was no significant difference between plywoods extended until 50% barley flours and non extended plywoods. 3) Shear strength of plywoods extended by 50% potato and 100% barley flours were shown worse result than non extended. 4) Dry and wet shear strength of plywoods extended by white ash were shown worst result. 5) The plywoods extended by potato flours were shown not only better shear strength, but also considered more profitable cost for extending.
In order to study the effect of formulation type on the burning characteristics of smoke generator, fenarimol smoke generators containing the powdered rice chaff as a combustible carrier were prepared by molding the kneaded mixtures into various shapes. Smoke generators containing wood flour as a combustible carrier were also prepared and compared with smoke generators containing rice chaff. All the fenarimol smoke generators moulded into powders, granules, and rods continuously burned out when the sodium chlorate content exceeded 11%. Regardless of their types, the highest smoking rate of fenarimol was observed with more than 13% of sodium chlorate. The smoking rate of active ingredient followed with the increasing order of powder (64.5%) < granule (78.4%) < rod (90.9%). The smoke rod was robust, easy to ignite, and showed the highest smoking rate among the tested formulations. When the mixture of wood flour and anti-flame agent was used as a combustible carrier, the burning rate was so slow that wood flour formulation seemed to be more suitable to a slow-burning fumigant rather than smoke generator.

Wood flour (WF)-recycled polypropylene (RPP) composites composed of 50% WF of Eucalyptus deglupta Blume species, 50% RPP, various contents of maleic anhydride (MAH) modifier (0; 1; 2; 5; 5; 7.5; and lo%), and 15% dicumyl peroxide (DCP) initiator (based on MAH weight) were subjected to weather for 1 year and subterranean termite (Coptotermes cuwignathus HOLMGREN) and dry wood termite (Cryptotermes cynocephalus LIGHT) for 3 and 4 weeks, respectively. WF-RPP composites with 2.5% MA modifier had tensile strength, breaking elongation and Young's modulus about 2.2, 2.3, and 1.2 times, respectively higher compared to MAH-free composites. The WF-RPP composites with or without MAH modifier had 5.5 times higher resistance to weather compared to RPP film alone. The color of the WF-RPP composites with or without MAH modifier became lighter after exposures to the weather. The WF-RPP composites with or without MAH modifier are resistant to subterranean termite Coptotermes curvignathus HOLMGREN and dry wood termite Cryptotermecs cynocephalus LIGHT under the experimental condition adopted.
