This study was carried out to investigate the biological effects oak wood vinegar. Antimicrobial activity was tested in five microbial species at the concentration of 5 to $50{\mu}l$ of oak wood vinegar by paper disc method. Growth of P. oleovoranse, P. vulgaris, E. coli, S. aureus and Prevotella intermedia was inhibited at a dose of as low as $50{\mu}l$ of oak wood vinegar. Antioxidant activities were measured by using DPPH radical scavenging and SOD-like activity. DPPH radical scavenging and SOD-like activities were 90% and 65% at the concentration of $25{\mu}l\;and\;50{\mu}l$ of oak wood vinegar, respectively. Stimulation of the macrophages RAW264.7 cells with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) resulted in increased production of nitric oxide (NO) in the medium. However, the oak wood vinegar showed marked inhibition of NO synthesis in a dose-dependent manner. This result suggest that oak wood vinegar plays significant role for activation of immune system in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases.

Wood vinegar and Asarum sieboldii Miquel were selected as candidate materials showed antimicrobial activity and insect repellent activity. These natural pesticides have its own color and these could cause color difference on fabric materials. In the present study, we investigated the color difference of undyed and dyed fabrics to evaluate negative effect of wood vinegar and A. sieboldii Miquel. Undyed and dyed fabrics were exposed to natural pesticides of various concentrations for six months in relative humidity 70% and temperature $28^{\circ}C$. After exposure of pesticides, color difference (${\Delta}E*$) were investigated at two weeks intervals for six months. As a results, dyed cotton, silk and undyed silk fabrics exposed wood vinegar were not nearly changed in their colors, but color of only undyed cotton fabric was clearly changed by wood vinegar. Especially color difference by wood vinegar on undyed cotton fabric was most distinct as the concentration increased. On the other hand, all of fabrics exposed A. sieboldii Miquel were not nearly changed in their colors for six months. Therefore, this study first suggests that wood vinegar and A. sieboldii Miquel as natural insecticides could be used to conserve for textile cultural properties from insects and microorganism, but wood vinegar couldn't use the high concentration on undyed cotton fabric.
For this study, Smilex powder, a pesticide, was sprayed on the Altari radish, and then underground water, Chitosan solution (${\times}$500), and wood vinegar solution (${\times}$1000) were evenly sprayed on the Altari radish respectively. Samples of Altari radishs for residual pesticide analysis were taken two hours, 1 day, 7 days, and 15 days after treatments, and the detectable concentration and degradability of procymidone, the pesticide residue, were measured. The results obtained are as follows: 1. When detectable concentration of procymidone within the altari radish was measured, treatment plots sprayed with underground water, Chitosan solution (${\times}$500), and wood vinegar solution (${\times}$1000) were found to show lower detectable concentration than the non-treatment plot which was sprayed with pesticide only. Especially, the treatment plots sprayed with Chitosan solution (${\times}$500), and with wood vinegar solution (${\times}$1,000) showed lower values than the average. 2. When the degradability of procymidone within the Altari radish was measured, the plot treated with Chitosan solution (${\times}$500) and the plot treated with wood vinegar solution (${\times}$1,000) were found to have relatively higher degradability of procymidone. There were not much differences among testing materials in the degradability of residual pesticides. However, the plot treated with Chitosan solution (${\times}$500) showed higher degradability. In terms of average degradability with time, degradability increased sharply 7 days after the foliar application of testing materials. 3. When the daily far-sighted view survey was conducted in order to find out growth disorder and damage on the Altari radish plants by the treatment of un-derground water, Chitosan solution (${\times}$500), and wood vinegar solution (${\times}$1,000), no symptomatic physiological disorders was observed on all the plants tested during the whole growing season at the tested concentration level.

In this study, herbal wood vinegar including Bambusoideae, Cinnamomi Cortex, Zingiberis Rhizoma was tested to see possibility for cosmetic or skin related medicine. Anti-oxidation effect of herbal wood vinegar was tested by DPPH free radical scavenging activity, and showed 97% inhibition rate at $50{\mu}g/ml$. Anti-bacterial effect was tested by disc diffusion method, and it indicated strong anti-bacterial activity against normal skin flora Staphylococcus aureus. Whitening effect was measured by tyrosinase inhibition assay, and it was lower compared with vitamin C. Stability test was done by MTT assay, and cell toxicity was relatively high. Stability was also checked, and there was not significant change in color, aroma, appearance and pH during storage. Anti-atopic dermatitis test was done by hairless mouse and herbal wood vinegar recovered damaged skin to almost normal condition after 9 days of application. IgE concentration in herbal wood vinegar treated mouse was also reduced 30% compared with control. From the study, herbal wood vinegar showed good anti-oxidation, anti-bacterial and anti-atopic dermatitis effect, and had promising application in cosmetic or skin related medicine.
This study was carried out to understand the effect on soil chemical property, ion contents, and growth of Lonicera japonica by treatment of simulated acid rain and wood vinegar. It was treated total 30 times by one time per 2 weeks during 150 days from June to October dividing to various pH level of simulated acid rain (each pH 5.6, 4.5, 3.5 and 2.5) and the control site (pH 6.3). The wood vinegar diluted with 500 times was also treated total 10 times by one time per 2 weeks at the experimental sites. The soil pH was reduced as pH level of simulated acid rain was decreased. The organic content, total nitrogen, and Av. $P_2O_5$ in soil showed a tendency to increment. However, the soil improvement effect was exposed to be insufficient when a wood vinegar was treated. In the component of the plant body, $SO_4{^2}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ increased due to the simulated acid rain treatment and the increment ratio was reduced in the wood vinegar treatment plot. In addition, the cation contents showed a tendency to variation due to pH of simulated acid rain. And it showed more increment in the leaves than the root. The early fallen leaves and growth inhibition of L. japonica showed up after the simulated acid rain treatment but the growth of L. japonica increased after the wood vinegar treatment.

Background : To control ginseng gray mold, farmers have mainly used inorganic chemical based fungicides. The recent emergence of fungicide resistance has reduced the effectiveness of such control methods. Such pesticides also carry additional problems, such as diffuse pollution. Methods and Results : Six treatments of organic agricultural materials were tested for control of ginseng gray mold, CAPW (Chrysophanic acid + Phytoncide + Wood vinegar), EmEWV (Emodin + Ethanol + Wood vinegar), CEWV (Curcumin + Eugenol + Wood vinegar), Bacillus subtilis, soybean oil and sulfur. The control effect for gray mold by a single application of the agrochemical fungicide industrial Fenhexamid wettable powder (WP) was 84.4%. The control effect by CAPW, EmEWV and CEWV varied between 52.7 - 64.9%. The control effect by B. subtilis, soybean oil, and sulfur were 32.9 - 59.2%. Conclusions : In the field tests, CAPW showed the highest control effects when used before, and at first stage of disease incidence, against ginseng gray mold.
Antifungal and antibacterial activities of wood vinegars were investigated in this study in order to apply for the natural fungicides and food preservatives. The antifungal activities of wood vinegars were measured as a hyphal growth inhibition rate using four plant pathogenic, four wood rot and one mushroom pathogenic fungi. Inhibition effect on the fungi growth was explicitly observed at the concentrations higher than 0.5% of unrefined wood vinegar and higher than 1.0% of refined wood vinegar, respectively, suggesting that unrefined wood vinegars showed the higher antifungal activities than that of refined wood vinegars. The highest inhibition effect on the fungi growth was shown in Libertella betulina which is a mushroom pathogenic fungus. In addition, the wood vinegars from Pinus densiflora showed the higher antifungal activities against the plant pathogenic and wood rot fungi than that from Quercus spp.. On the other hand, the antibacterial activities of wood vinegars were determined by a paper disc method using the three gram positive and five gram negative bacteria. The unrefined wood vinegars showed a prominent effect on the suppression of bacteria growth at the concentration of 10%, while the suppression of bacteria growth was not observed in the refined wood vinegars. These results also suggest that the unrefined wood vinegars showed the higher antibacterial activities than the refined wood vinegars. The antibacterial activities of wood vinegars against gram positive bacteria were higher than those of wood vinegars against gram negative bacteria. From these results, it can be inferred that the wood vinegars has the strong antimicrobial activities and can be applied as the natural fungicides and food preservatives.

Application of wood vinegar in fish farms has been used for the disinfection of pathogenic microorganisms and the treatment of infectious diseases. This study was performed to know the acute toxicity of wood vinegar to carp Cyprinus carpio, flounder Paralichyhus olivaceus, rock fish Sebastes schlegeli and black sea bream Pagrus major. The 24 hr, 48 hr and 96 hr LC50 respectively were: carp 1243, 1143 and 1016 ppm; flounder 1397, 1253 and 1226 ppm; rock fish 1058, 993 and 967 ppm; and black sea bream 650, 616 and 596 ppm. Death and survival of fish exposed to lethal concentrations of wood vinegar were apparently related to massive necrosis, fusion and epithelial lifting of gill lamellar epithelium, suggesting the osmotic imbalance and lack of oxygen uptake.
The organic acids (formic acid, acetic acid and propionic acid), phenol and benzopyrene in wood vinegar were determine by HPLC. An $Atlantis^{TM}dC_{18}$ column with a acetonitrile: 0.1% phosphoric acid (5: 95, organic acids), acetonitrile: water (10 : 90, phenol), 100% acetonitrile (benzopyrene) as a mobile phase was used. Retention time of acetic acid, formic acid, propionic acid, phenol and benzopyrene was 4.77, 3.73, 9.08, 30.97 and 6.10 min, respectively. The calibration curves of organic acids, phenol, benzopyrene were linear over the concentration range of $30{\sim}500,\;60{\sim}1000$, and $3{\sim}50\;{\mu}g/ml$ with correlation coefficient of above 0.999. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of acetic acid, formic acid, propionic acid, phenol, and benzopyrene was 1.71 and 5.19, 1.11 and 3.35, 4.87 and 14.74, 6.45 and 19.55, 0.08 and $0.24\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The coefficients of variation for intra- and inter-day assay were $0.21{\sim}4.14$ and $0.07{\sim}1.19%$, respectively and the precision was $95{\sim}115%$. From this study, we suggest that HPLC is suitable method for the determination of organics in wood vinegar and could be applied to quality control of wood vinegar.
Attempts were made to control Diatrype stigma occurred on the bed-log of Shiitake using wood vinegar, Pinus koraiensis extract, Piper nigrum extract, and fungicides. Mycelial growth of D. stigma was inhibited completely at 35,000 ppm and no ascospore germinated at 25,000 ppm wood vinegar. Inhibition rates of Pinus koraiensis extract (200 ppm), and Piper nigrum extract (1,000 ppm) to ascospore germination were 98.9% and 95.9%, respectively. In fungicide selection, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of benomyl, carbendazim, and thiabendazole ranged $0{\sim}0.4\;{\mu}g\;a.i/m{\ell}$. Difenoconazole at $0.08\;{\mu}g\;a.i/m{\ell}$ inhibited 98.9% of ascospore germination. Inhibition efficacy of fungicides was not highly variable among the low-, middle-, and high-temperature type strains of shiitake. Benomyl, carbendazim, thiabendazole and thiophanate-methyl could not suppress the mycelial growth of Shiitake. Tebuconazole at $0.4\;{\mu}g\;a.i/m{\ell}$ suppressed 80% of the mycelial growth and it was the highest inhibition rate among the fungicides. In field trials, wood vinegar, Pinus koraiensis extract, Piper nigrum extract, and fungicides were sprayed on the bed-logs before or after D. stigma produced pycnidia. Wood vinegar at 150,000 ppm concentration, showed control effect of 72.7% in the treatment before pycnidiospore formation. On the other hand, 70,000 ppm wood vinegar and 1,000 ppm of thiophanate-methyl showed control effects of 58.1% and 52.3% in the treatment after pycnidiospore formation.
