In the wireless sensor networks using a multi-hop, quality variation of links occurs irregularly due to the hardware restriction and environmental factor. If an appropriate route, which is affected by the quality variation, is not selected. Traditionally, a beacon is periodically broadcasted and the link quality is estimated. However, the periodically beacon based scheme cannot efficiently estimate the quality of the link changing irregularly. In this paper, a scheme to estimate the link quality adaptively according to network state is proposed. When the link quality changes, the scheme adapts to a change agilely and packet losses are reduced. When there is no change of the link quality, the link quality is estimated in the long period and the energy consumption is reduced. Through performance evaluations, we prove that our adaptive link estimation scheme improves the energy efficiency and packet reception ratio than the periodic estimation scheme.

In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for Internet of Things (IoT) environment, fault tolerance is a most fundamental issue due to strict energy constraint of sensor node. In this paper, a robust energy saving data dissemination protocol for IoT-WSNs is proposed. Minimized energy consumption and dissemination delay time based on signal strength play an important role in our scheme. The representative dissemination protocol SPIN (Sensor Protocols for Information via Negotiation) overcomes overlapped data problem of the classical Flooding scheme. However, SPIN never considers distance between nodes, thus the issue of dissemination energy consumption is becoming more important problem. In order to minimize the energy consumption, the shortest path between sensors should be considered to disseminate the data through the entire IoT-WSNs. SPMS (Shortest Path Mined SPIN) scheme creates routing tables using Bellman Ford method and forwards data through a multi-hop manner to optimize power consumption and delay time. Due to these properties, it is very hard to avoid heavy traffic when routing information is updated. Additionally, a node failure of SPMS would be caused by frequently using some sensors on the shortest path, thus network lifetime might be shortened quickly. In contrast, our scheme is resilient to these failures because it employs energy aware concept. The dissemination delay time of the proposed protocol without a routing table is similar to that of shortest path-based SPMS. In addition, our protocol does not require routing table, which needs a lot of control packets, thus it prevents excessive control message generation. Finally, the proposed scheme outperforms previous schemes in terms of data transmission success ratio, therefore our protocol could be appropriate for IoT-WSNs environment.

Mobile multi-hop relaying (MMR) technology is being considered as a promising solution capable to enhance coverage, user throughput, and system capacity of the current wired backbone dependent wireless access networks. Since the relaying nodes do not need a wired backbone access, MMR technology offers easy and low-cost deployment, flexible cell planning, and adaptive traffic handling performance. In this paper, we investigate performance and cost effectiveness of the MMR technology deployment in the IEEE802.16j based WiBro/WiMAX systems. We first introduce standardization activities and research issues of MMR WiBro/ WiMAX systems. Since the coverage extension problem may occur in metropolitan areas as well as suburban or rural areas where user density is relatively low or moderate, we introduce several MMR topologies and analyze cost-effectiveness of MMR based coverage extension with respect to the user traffic density. Then, we argue cost effect on MMR technology deployment and throughput performance, Finally, we introduce further study issues including sectorized base station based MMR deployment approaches and the single and multi-frame structure MMR approaches.

A field server was developed by using ubiquitous sensor network technology to monitor the abrupt weather variation in local or mountain area. The data transmissions between deployed field servers in local terrain are very important technology in disaster prevention monitoring system. Weather related information such as temperature, humidity, illumination, atmospheric pressure, dew point and meteorological data are collected from the designated field at a regular interval. The received information from the multiple sensors located at the sensor field is used flooding routing protocol transmission techniques and the sensing data is transferred to gateway through multi-hop method. Telosb sensor node are programmed by nesC language in TinyOS platform to monitor the weather parameters of the local terrain.
In conventional cooperative communication data rate is 1/2 than non cooperative protocols. In this paper, we propose a full data rate DF (Decode and Forward) cooperative transmission scheme. Proposed scheme is based on time division multiplexing (TDM) channel access. When DF protocol has full data rate, it can not obtain diversity gain under the pairwise error probability (PEP) view point. If it increases time slot to obtain diversity gain, then data rate is reduced. The proposed algorithm uses orthogonal frequency and constellation rotation to obtain both full data rate and diversity order 2. Moreover, performance is analyzed according to distance and optimized components that affect the system performance by using computer simulation. The simulation results revealed that the cooperation can save the network power up to 7dB over direct transmission and 5dB over multi-hop transmission at BER of $10^{-2}$. Besides, it can improve date rate of system compared with the conventional DF protocol.
This paper aims to present the mathematical model to find the mean web object transfer latency in the slow-start phase of TCP congestion control mechanism, which is one of the main control techniques of Internet. Mean latency is an important service quality measure of end-user in the network. The application area of the proposed latency model is the narrowband environment including multi-hop wireless network and Internet of Things(IoT), where packet loss occurs in the slow-start phase only due to small window. The model finds the latency considering initial window size and the packet loss rate. Our model shows that for a given packet loss rate, round trip time and initial window size mainly affect the mean web object transfer latency. The proposed model can be applied to estimate the mean response time that end user requires in the IoT service applications.

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) refer to autonomous networks in which wireless data communications are established between multiple nodes in a given coverage area without a base station or centralized administration. Because of node mobility and limited battery life, the network topology may changes frequently. Selecting the most reliable path during route discovery process is important to improve performance in ad-hoc networks. In this study, we proposed an enhanced routing protocol based on AODV by monitoring variation of receiving signal strength. New metric function that consists of node mobility and hops of path is used for routing decision. From extensive experiments by using NS-2, The performance of the proposed routing scheme has been imp개ved by comparison to AODV protocol.
IEEE 802.16j MR networks introduce RSs (Relay Stations) within the IEEE 802.16 system in order to enhance the data throughput and extend the coverage. However, the current standardization defines that the BS (Base Station) controls MS's (Mobile Station's) handover, not only it induces the large signaling overhead but also handover latency could increase. In this paper, we propose a handover protocol in the MR networks where the high capability RSs that can process the MS's control functions are deployed. First, we classify the handover scenarios for the MR networks with the high capability RSs. Then, we define the MAC handover procedure, corresponding MAC management messages and the transmission routes for the proposed messages so that an 802.16e MS can perform seamless handover without noticing it is attached to an MR network. The simulation results show that the proposed handover protocol not only reduces the MAC management message overhead transferred through the wireless links compared to IEEE 802.16j/D1, which is the current standard for MR networks, but also performs the rapider and more secure MS handover than IEEE 802.16e and IEEE 802.16j/D1.
Due to the application-specific nature of wireless sensor networks, the sensitivity to such a requirement as data reporting latency may vary depending on the type of applications, thus requiring application-specific algorithm and protocol design paradigms which help us to maximize energy conservation and thus the network lifetime. In this paper, we propose a novel delay-adaptive sensor scheduling scheme for energy-saving data gathering which is based on a two phase clustering (TPC). The ultimate goal is to extend the network lifetime by providing sensors with high adaptability to the application-dependent and time-varying delay requirements. The TPC requests sensors to construct two types of links: direct and relay links. The direct links are used for control and forwarding time critical sensed data. On the other hand, the relay links are used only for data forwarding based on the user delay constraints, thus allowing the sensors to opportunistically use the most energy-saving links and forming a multi-hop path. Simulation results demonstrate that cluster-based delay-adaptive data gathering strategy (CD-DGS) saves a significant amount of energy for dense sensor networks by adapting to the user delay constraints.

Since the wireless communications have a limited transmission, the devices just around a master node can exchange data. Though Bluetooth and Zigbee support ad hoc, they are not appropriate for real-time voice communications. In this paper, we present a TDMA-based relay protocol for several users to communicate simultaneously. The proposed protocol can relay data or voice to other nodes in real-time by the multi-hop transmission method using TDMA. And the proposed protocol improves the network performance by allocating different frequencies to the slaves depending on the routing path scheduled by the routing table. NS-2 simulation shows that the performance of the proposed protocol is good in terms of the transmission delay and pecket loss probability in the real-time voice transmission.
