  • Energy consumption of today's wired data networks is driven by access networks. Today, green networking has become a issue to reduce energy wastes and $CO_2$ emission by adding energy managing mechanism to wired data networks. However, energy consumption and environmental impacts of wired access networks are largely unknown. In addition, there is a lack of general and quantitative valuation basis of energy use of large-scale access networks and $CO_2$ emissions from them. This paper compared and analyzed limits of existing models estimating energy consumption of access networks and it proposed a model to estimate energy consumption of large-scale access networks by top-down approach. In addition, this work presented models that assess environmental(anti-greening) impacts of access networks using results from our models. The performance evaluation of the proposed models are achieved by comparing with previous models based on existing investigated materials and actual measured values in accordance with real cases.

  • Green networking has become a issue to reduce energy wastes and CO2 emission by adding energy managing mechanism to wired data networks. Energy consumption of the overall wired data networks is driven by access networks, expect for end devices. However, on a global scale, it is more difficult to manage centrally energy, measure and model the real energy use and energy savings potential of the access networks. This paper presented the multiple linear regression model to predict energy consumption of wired access networks using supervised learning of machine learning with data collected by existing investigated materials, actual measured values and results of many models. In addition, this work optimized the performance of it by various experiments and predict energy consumption of wired access networks. The performance evaluation of the regression model was achieved by well-knowned evaluation metrics.

  • Increasing popularity of WLAN and advancement of WPAN allow user to connect to the Internet easily today. The increasing of number of networking mobile device such as laptop and PDA requires computing devices to share high speed Internet line or work on networks in most cases. This has stimulated the demand of access point that supports multiple network interfaces. This paper describes the process of design, implementation and test of the wired/wireless integrated access point that supports multiple network interfaces such as wired LAN, wireless LAN, Bluetooth, and Broadband network. We designed and developed the hardware system and protocol software to integrate heterogeneous network. The system has shown compatibility with standard specification and good performance through testing with various network devices.

  • A digital home is a ubiquitous environment that is expected to be realized in the near future. All information appliances in a house are connected to each other through wired and/or wireless home networks. Authenticated user can access the various services provided by the digital home, and the access is not restricted by equipment, time, or location. The technologies that form the digital home can be grouped into two categories: wired networking technologies and wireless networking technologies. For the purpose of ubiquitous environments, wireless-networks offer suitable and seamless high-quality services. A wireless LAN can be created simply by equipping a single access point. For that reason, the cost of establishing such a network is low and using it is easy. Of course, there is an exciting new wireless technology. It is the Ultra Wide Band (UWB). However, it is not enough to bring wireless convenience, although offering a broad range of high-speed data transfer capabilities, Because of unstable. Thus, of the wireless-networking systems, we focus on the wireless LAN. We quantitatively analyze its capabilities. The dynamic and adaptive wireless LAN provides a foundation for the evolution toward the next generation of wireless and adaptive networks. The difference between wired LAN and wireless LAN in upload and download rates is small. Although the wireless LAN experiences a greater loss rate than the wired LAN, the difference is minimal. We conclude that a wireless LAN is suitable for use in an apartment environment.

  • In this paper, we describe a development of a Bluetooth Access Point for the WAN connection of home network devices. Especially, users can access the PSTN at home instead of expensive digital cellular network through the AP, using the 'one-phone', which is the Bluetooth enabled cellular phone. The simultaneous benchmark test about telephone service and LAN access service shows the perfect compatibility and reasonable performance of the access point. The one-phone service can become a convergence of wired and wireless communication through the AP.

  • The performance in combination of wired and wireless mesh network which will be a main access network in future internet is directly linked with service quality to users. In this paper, we evaluate variant TCP performance and analyze traffic characteristics on Wireless (Seoul National University Mesh testbed) - Wired (KOREN/Abilene) - Wireless (HP Mesh testbed in the USA) Network. We found that RTT is proper in this network to serve a VoIP service. Also we propose an enhanced TCP protocol which can perform well in both wireless network which has many packet losses and wired network which has high bandwidth and long delay.

  • Integration of mobile networks and Internet has started with 2.5 generation of mobile cellular networks. Internet traffic is today dominant traffic type worldwide. The hanger for higher data rates needed for data traffic and new IP based services is essential in the development of future wireless networks. In such situation, even 3G with up to 2 Mbit/s has not provided data rates that are used by Internet users with fixed broadband dial-up or through wired local area networks. The solution to provide higher bit rates in wireless access network has been found in wireless LAN although initially it has been developed to extend wired LAN into wireless domain. In this paper, we propose and describe a solution created for interoperability between mobile cellular network and WLAN. The integration between two networks, cellular and WLAN, is performed on the authentication, authorization, and accounting, i.e., AAA side. For that purpose we developed WLAN access controller and WLAN AAA gateway, which provide gateway-type access control as well as charging and billing functionalities for the WLAN service. In the development process of these elements, we have considered current development stadium of all needed network entities and protocols. The provided solution provides cost-effective and easy-to-deploy PLMN-WLAN Internetworking scenario.

  • WPA is a security service that greatly increases data protection and access control on WLANs. WPA uses TKIP that is secure algorithm of 802.11i and 802.1X/EAP authentication. It provides enhanced secure ability with the dynamic security key to correct WEP's weaknesses. In this paper, we obtain measured data transmission time that by how to create secure key of WPA in the wired and wireless network. The result shows that the delay of data transmission time was not long even if used WPA.

  • Security and privacy issues complicate wireless local area network deployment. for a wired network, certain levels of security are maintained since access to the physical medium is restricted to the devices physically connected to the network. Though wireless local area networks offer some built-in security features, security breaches are possible if appropriate precautions are not taken. This paper describes security issues related to wireless local area networks and presents a software approach for restricting and controlling wireless access. The system authenticates users on the basis of identity, privileges and access hardware by distributed software agents that implement security policy and restrict unauthorized access.

  • As the usage of wireless LAN becomes common in working environment, the number of database systems that support both wired and wireless users increases rapidly. The characteristics of wireless LAN that its speed is slow relatively comparing to wired network and the users in its environment connects to different communication points as they moves creates another challenge to be resolved in database systems. In the environment of hybrid communication systems, wired and wireless for voluminous data amount and a number of users, the two layer architecture of the conventional client-server database systems has limitation in the system performance. This is due to that server is the only point of data service in client-server database systems. In this paper, we discuss a new extended database system architecture that data services are distributed among servers and clients based on user database access patterns in order to improve system performance. We analyze the expected system performance by using simulation technique and prove the practical utilization of the system by demonstrating experimental results.
