  • Highly sweep leading edge extensions(LEX) applied to delta wings have greatly improved the subsonic maneuverability of contemporary fighters. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vortex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;25^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections of chord length($30{\%},\;40{\%},\;50{\%},\;60{\%},\;70{\%},\;80{\%}$). Sideslip effect in case of the LEX was also studied for two sideslip(yaw) angles($5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$) at one angle of attack(20). Distribution of time-averaged velocity vectors and vorticity over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. Quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarify the significance of the LEX existence. Animation presentation in velocity distribution was also implemented to reveal the effect of LEX with wing vortex interaction.

  • A dragonfly inspired flapping wing is investigated in this paper. The flapping wing is actuated from the root by a PZT-5H and PZN-7%PT single crystal unimorph in the piezofan configuration. The non-linear governing equations of motion of the smart flapping wing are obtained using the Hamilton's principle. These equations are then discretized using the Galerkin method and solved using the method of multiple scales. Dynamic characteristics of smart flapping wings having the same size as the actual wings of three different dragonfly species Aeshna Multicolor, Anax Parthenope Julius and Sympetrum Frequens are analyzed using numerical simulations. An unsteady aerodynamic model is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. Finally, a comparative study of performances of three piezoelectrically actuated flapping wings is performed. The numerical results in this paper show that use of PZN-7%PT single crystal piezoceramic can lead to considerable amount of wing weight reduction and increase of lift and thrust force compared to PZT-5H material. It is also shown that dragonfly inspired smart flapping wings actuated by single crystal piezoceramic are a viable contender for insect scale flapping wing micro air vehicles.

  • Experimental study was conducted to investigate aerodynamic interference effect of wing tip vortex in formation flight of high speed aircraft. In formation flight, wing tip vortex produced by leading aircraft can affect on the aerodynamic characteristics of trailing aircraft. The interference effect of flow is varied with distances between wing tips of leading and trailing aircraft. It is confirmed, in this study, that the interference of wing tip vortex generated from the leading aircraft makes the aerodynamic forces and moments of the trailing aircraft with the vertical or horizontal positions of the trailing aircraft. Especially, the lift coefficients of trailing aircraft were highly increased at y/b=-0.125, z/b=0.0 or deeply decreased at y/b=-0.5, z/b=0.38. The interfering pattern of wing tip vortices from two aircraft is precisely observed.

  • Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modern air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras$(1280pixel\times1024pixel)$ were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

  • The effects of strake planform shapes on the vortex formation, interaction, and breakdown characteristics of double-delta wings were investigated through pressure measurements of upper wing surface and off-surface flow visualization. Three different shapes of strakes were attached to a delta wing respectively to form double-delta wing configurations and tested in a medium-sized subsonic wind tunnel. The results of the pressure measurements indicated that the strake planform having a higher sweep angle generated more concentrated vortex systems at upstream locations, which, however, tended to diffuse and break down much faster at the downstream locations. It was also found from the off-surface visualization results that the cause for the vortex concentration was due to the acceleration of coiling and merging processes between the wing and strake vortices.

  • The flying wing configuration with high sweep angles and rounded leading edge represent a complex flow of structures by the leading edge vortex. For control of the tailless flying wing configuration with unstable directional stability, flaperon is used. In this study, we conducted numerical simulations for a non-slender flying wing configuration with a rounded leading edge and analyzed the effect of the sideslip angle and flaperon. Through aerodynamic coefficient analysis, it was found that the effect of AoS on lift and drag coefficient was minimal and the side force and moment coefficient were markedly influenced by AoS. As the sideslip angle increased, the pitch break, which is related to the pitching moment coefficient, was delayed. Through stability analysis, the directional and lateral static stability of the flying wing configuration were increased by flaperon. Also, the structure and behavior of the leading edge vortex were analyzed by observing the contour of the pressure coefficient and the skin friction line.

  • In this study, wind tunnel test on Quad-Tilt Propeller which has tandem wings is carried out to analyze the aerodynamic interference effect of front wing and propeller on rear wing during forward flight. Using 6-axis balance system, forces and moments of whole aircraft were measured and using strain gauge at wing root, bending moments were measured to observe change of aerodynamic force of each wings. A 12-hole probe was used to measure the flow field in the wing and propeller wake. Flow characteristics were observed qualitatively through flow visualization experiment using tuft and smoke. To measure the aerodynamic interference by elements, the influence of front wing and propeller on rear wing was analyzed by changing the wings and propellers mount combination.

  • The pressure distributions on a semi-span wing 1/12 scale mode and sic component aerodynamic forces and moments on a complete 1/16 scale advanced trainer model were measured. To reduce wing-tip vortex strength, 3 wing-tip jet slot shaped(forward $35{^{\circ}C}$ direction, straigt direction, backward $35{^{\circ}C}$ direction) and 3 blowing coefficents (0.004, 0.009, 0.017) were considered. From experiment results, the case of straight direction and blowing coefficent of 0.017 was the best effective in the reduction of drag and in increase of lift-drag ratio and A rate of drag decrease and a rate of lift-drag ratio increase were of most effective on angle of attack 8 degree.

  • In the present study, we have developed a flapping wing using a smart material to mimic the nature's flyers, birds. The wing consists of composite frames, a flexible PVC film and a surface actuator, and the main wing motions are flapping, twisting and camber motions. To change the camber, a Macro-Fiber Composite(MFC) is used as the surface actuator, and it's structural response is analyzed by the use of piezoelectric-thermal analogy. To measure the lift and thrust simultaneously, a test stand consisting of two load cells is manufactured. Some aerodynamic tests are performed for the wing in a subsonic wind tunnel to evaluate the dynamic characteristics. Experimental results show that the main lift is mostly affected by the forward velocity and the pitch angle, but the thrust is mostly affected by the flapping frequency. The effect of the camber generated by the MFC actuator can produce the sufficient lift increment of up to 24.4% in static condition and 20.8% in dynamic condition.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of an insect-type flapping wings were carried out to obtain the design parameters of Micro Hovering Air Vehicle. A pair of wing model was scaled up about 200 times and applied two pairs of 4-bar linkage mechanism to mimic the wing motion of a fruit fly(Drosophila). To verify the Weis-Fogh mechanism, a pair of wings revolved on the 'Delayed Rotation'. Lift and drag were measured in conditions of the Reynolds number based on wing tip velocity of about 1,200 and the maximum angle of attack of 40$40^{\circ}$. Inertia forces of a wing model were also measured by using a 99.98% vacuum chamber and subtracted on measured data in air. In the present study, high lift effect of Weis-Fogh mechanism was appeared in the middle of upstroke motion.
