Dynamically Alternating Power Saving Scheme for IEEE 802.16e Mobile Broadband Wireless Access Systems

  • Power saving is one of the most important features that extends the lifetime of portable devices in mobile wireless networks. The IEEE 802.16e mobile broadband wireless access system adopts a power saving mechanism with a binary truncated exponent algorithm for determining sleep intervals. When using this standard power saving scheme, there is often a delay before data packets are received at the mobile subscriber station (MSS). In order to extend the lifetime of a MSS, the battery energy must be used efficiently. This paper presents a dynamically alternating sleep interval scheduling algorithm as a solution to deal with the power consumption problem. We take into account different traffic classes and schedule a proper sequence of power saving classes. The window size of the sleep interval is calculated dynamically according to the packet arrival rate. We make a tradeoff between the power consumption and packet delay. The method achieves the goal of efficiently reducing the listening window size, which leads to increased power saving. The performance of our proposed scheme is compared to that of the standard power saving scheme. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of our power saving scheme and its ability to strike the appropriate performance balance between power saving and packet delay for a MSS in an IEEE 802.16e mobile broadband wireless access system.

Development of Embedded X-System (임베디드 X-시스템 개발)

  • This paper describes the GUI implementation of an intelligent embedded system which can be used for a personal information platform and an industrial mobile application system. It shows the architecture and the necessary structure and components of X Window graphic system. The embedded system used in this paper has low power and high performance processor, and has a large memory size with a nand-flash memory device. We configured the linux kernel with a TIT-LCD and touch screen device for the operation of X Window system. And we used GTK+2 for running application softwares on the platform embedded system. The GUI library of GTK+2 is useful for providing the same graphics programming environment with host Linux PC. We have developed in this paper the X Window system and the GUI environment for GTK+2 in a new embedded system, and verified the full operation of X Window system and application softwares using GTK+2. The embedded system with large memory size can be used in X Window application softwares for providing a personal information service with a mobile embedded system.

  • The Linux operating system is expanding to include desktops and servers, as well as mobile devices, automobiles and embedded devices, and is the dominant operating system category because it is freely available and open source software. However, the desktop market is dominated by Microsoft's Windows, and Apple's Mac OS is increasingly dominated by enthusiasts, but Linux's growth is stagnant. An important element to make up for this deficiency is the X Window System. Most Linux distributions still use the traditional X.org server as the X Window System, but it is heavy and slow. To replace it, a new X window system called Wayland emerged. Wayland is small and light enough to fit on an embedded or mobile device, so it can be mounted on the IoT related device as well as on the desktop. With the advent of Wayland, the change in the X window will accelerate the popularization of Linux.

Adaptive Minimum Sleep Window Algorithm for Saving Energy Consumption in IEEE 802.16e (IEEE 802.16e에서의 에너지 절약을 위한 적응적 최소 수면 구간 결정 알고리즘)

  • IEEE 802.16e has adopted sleep mode to minimize energy consumption of mobile nodes with high speed mobility. If the Base Station (BS) has no data to be sent to a Mobile Subscriber Station (MSS) at the instant of ending sleep window of the MSS, the MSS increases its sleep window interval by double until the window interval reaches to the maximum sleep window interval. Thus, during the operation of sleep mode, MSS repeatedly performs switch on/off action until there exist frames to be received from BS. The switch on/off operation significantly consumes energy of MSS. To effectively deal with the energy of the MSS, this paper proposes an algorithm which decides the minimum sleep window interval that will be used in next sleep mode based on the current sleep window interval. We evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.16e sleep mode algorithm and our proposed algorithm in terms of energy consumption and blocking probability. Compared with the current sleep mode algorithm used in IEEE 802.16e, the proposed algorithm decreases the energy consumption by about 30% without increasing blocking probability.

X-Rays through the Looking Glass: Mobile Imaging Dosimetry and Image Quality of Suspected COVID-19 Patients

  • Background: This paper aims to evaluate the clinical utility and radiation dosimetry, for the mobile X-ray imaging of patients with known or suspected infectious diseases, through the window of an isolation room. The suitability of this technique for imaging coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is of particular focus here, although it is expected to have equal relevance to many infectious respiratory disease outbreaks. Materials and Methods: Two exposure levels were examined, a "typical" mobile exposure of 100 kVp/1.6 mAs and a "high" exposure of 120 kVp/5 mAs. Exposures of an anthropomorphic phantom were made, with and without a glass window present in the beam. The resultant phantom images were provided to experienced radiographers for image quality evaluation, using a Likert scale to rate the anatomical structure visibility. Results and Discussion: The incident air kerma doubled using the high exposure technique, from 29.47 µGy to 67.82 µGy and scattered radiation inside and outside the room increased. Despite an increase in beam energy, high exposure technique images received higher image quality scores than images acquired using lower exposure settings. Conclusion: Increased scattered radiation was very low and can be further mitigated by ensuring surrounding staff are appropriately distanced from both the patient and X-ray tube. Although an increase in incident air kerma was observed, practical advantages in infection control and personal protective equipment conservation were identified. Sites are encouraged to consider the use of this technique where appropriate, following the completion of standard justification practices.

  • Java Virtual Machine이 기반이 되는 플랫폼 사용으로 모바일 폰 Java는 C/C++로 컴파일 된 Binary File에 비해 속도가 떨어지고 고성능의 프로세서를 필요로 하기 때문에 가격이 비싸질 수밖에 없다. Native Binary를 사용하는 Nano-X Window System Graphic Engine은 저 사양 프로세서에서 사용가능한 모바일 플랫폼으로써 Java Virtual Machine 보다 빠른 속도를 구현할 수 있고 GPL License를 따르기 때문에 생산단가도 절약할 수 있어 저가형 핸드폰의 대량 생산으로 인해 현재 떠오르고 있는 신흥시장에서 보다 경쟁력을 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 모바일 플랫폼과 Nano-X window System을 비교해보고 모바일 플랫폼으로써의 개발 방향에 대해 논해 보려 한다.

  • This paper presents a single vision-based sel(-localization method in an corridor environment. We use the Hough transform for finding parallel lines and vertical lines. And we use these cross points as feature points and it is calculated relative distance from mobile robot to these points. For matching environment map to feature points, searching window is defined and self-localization is performed by matching procedure. The result shows the suitability of this method by experiment.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to reduce the audible noise generated by TFT-LCD module in mobile applications. We also analyzed impact factors which effect on the audible noise. It is expected that this noise source comes from various impact factors such as vibration of flexible printed-circuit board (FPCB) and LCD panel, and static electricity charged in window and back-light unit. Windowless type and window type models are evaluated to analyze noise level due to the static electricity charged in window. To obtain reliable and reproducible data, we constructed controllable test jig and measurement set-up.

  • In this paper, a new on-line local path planning algorithm without local minima problem is proposed. This method, called Window Analysis Method (WAM), is simple and fast, and it helps a robot take a safe path avoiding obstacles in unknown environment. WAM has simulated on the mobile robot to demonstrate its reliability and fesibility.
