There have been many academic researches on the aerodynamic design of wind turbine based on blade element method (BEM) and momentum theory (MT, or actuating disk theory). However, in the real world, the turbine blade design requires many additional constraints more than theoretical analysis. The standard procedure is studied in the present paper to design new blades for the wind turbine system ranged from the small size from 1 to 10 kW. From the experience of full design of a 10 kW blade, the authors tried to set up a standard procedure for the aerodynamic design based on IEC 61400-2. Wind-turbine scale, rotating speed, and geometrical chord/twist distribution at the segmented span positions are calculated with a suitable BEM/MT code, and the geometrical shape of tip and root should be modified after considering various parameters: wing-tip vortex, aerodynamic noise, turbine efficiency, structural safety, convenience of fabrication, and even economic factor likes price, etc. The evaluated data is passed to the next procedure of structural design, but some of them should still be corresponded with each other: the fluid-structure interaction is one of those problems not yet solved, for example. Consequently, the design procedure of small wind-turbine blades is set up for the mass production of commercial products in this research.
In order to investigate the influence of different blade positions on aerodynamic load and wind loads and load-effects of large scale wind turbine tower under the halt state, we take a certain 3 MW large scale horizontal axis three-blade wind turbine as the example for analysis. First of all, numerical simulation was conducted for wind turbine flow field and aerodynamic characteristics under different halt states (8 calculating conditions in total) based on LES (large eddy simulation) method. The influence of different halt states on the average and fluctuating wind pressure coefficients of turbine tower surface, total lift force and resistance coefficient, circular flow and wake flow characteristics was compared and analysed. Then on this basis, the time-domain analysis of wind loads and load-effects was performed for the wind turbine tower structure under different halt states by making use of the finite element method. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows: The halt positions of wind blade could have a big impact on tower circular flow and aerodynamic distribution, in which Condition 5 is the most unfavourable while Condition 1 is the most beneficial condition. The wind loads and load-effects of disturbed region of tower is obviously affected by different halt positions of wind blades, especially the large fluctuating displacement mean square deviation at both windward and leeward sides, among which the maximum response occurs in $350^{\circ}$ to the tower top under Condition 8; the maximum bending moment of tower bottom occurs in $330^{\circ}$ under Condition 2. The extreme displacement of blade top all exceeds 2.5 m under Condition 5, and the maximum value of windward displacement response for the tip of Blade 3 under Condition 8 could reach 3.35 m. All these results indicate that the influence of halt positions of different blades should be taken into consideration carefully when making wind-resistance design for large scale wind turbine tower.
The characteristics of boundary layers have significant effects on the aerodynamic forces and vibration of the wind turbine blade. The incorporation of active trailing edge flaps (ATEF) into wind turbine blades has been proven as an effective control approach for alleviation of load and vibration. This paper is aimed at investigating the effects of external trailing edge flaps on the flow pattern and velocity distribution within a boundary layer of a NREL 5MW reference wind turbine, as well as designing a new type of velocity sensors for future validation measurements. An aeroelastic-aerodynamic simulation with FAST-AeroDyn code was conducted on the entire wind turbine structure and the modifications were made on turbine blade sections with ATEF. The results of aeroelastic-aerodynamic simulations were combined with the results of two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic simulations. From these, the velocity profile of the boundary layer as well as the thickness variation with time under the influence of a simplified load case was calculated for four different blade-flap combinations (without flap, with $-5^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and $+5^{\circ}$ flap). In conjunction with the computational modeling of the characteristics of boundary layers, a bio-inspired hair flow sensor was designed for sensing the boundary flow field surrounding the turbine blades, which ultimately aims to provide real time data to design the control scheme of the flap structure. The sensor element design and performance were analyzed using both theoretical model and finite element method. A prototype sensor element with desired bio-mimicry responses was fabricated and validated, which will be further refined for integration with the turbine blade structures.
Recently, the renewable energy has been widely used as a wind energy and solar energy resource due to lack and environmental issues of the mostly used fossil fuel. In this situation, the interest in wind power has been risen as an important energy source. For this blade a high efficiency wind turbine blade was designed with the proposing aerodynamic design procedure, and a light and low cost composite structure blade was designed considering fatigue life. Structural analyses including load case study, stress, deformation, buckling, fatigue life and vibration analysis were performed using the Finite Element Method.

This study proposes a development result for the 1-kW class small wind turbine system, which is applicable to relatively low wind speed regions like Korea and has the variable pitch control mechanism. In the aerodynamic design of the wind turbine blade, parametric studies were carried out to determine an optimum aerodynamic configuration which is not only more efficient at low wind speed but whose diameter is not much larger than similar class other blades. A light composite structure, which can endure effectively various loads, was newly designed. In order to evaluate the structural design of the composite blade, the structural analysis was peformed by the finite element method. Moreover both structural safety and stability were verified through the full- scale structural test.

The purpose of the present study is to design a 500W-class micro scale composite wind turbine blade. The blade airfoil of FFA-W3-211 was selected to meet Korean weather condition. The skin-spar-f Dam sandwich type structure was adopted for improving buckling and vibration damping characteristics. The design loads were determined at wind speed of 25m/s. and the structural analysis was performed to confirm safety and stability from strength. buckling and natural frequency using the finite element code. NISA II [6]. The prototype was manufactured using the hand-lay up method and it was experimently tested using the sand bag loading method. In order to evaluate the design results. it was compared with experimental results. According to comparison results. the estimated results such as compressible stress. max tip deflection natural frequency and buckling load factor were well agreed with the experimental results.
Recently the wind energy has been alternatively used as a renewable energy resource instead of the mostly used fossil fuel due to its lack and environmental issues. This work is to propose a structural design and analysis procedure for development of the low noise 100W class small wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. Structural analysis including load cases, stress, deformation, buckling, vibration and fatigue life was performed using the Finite Element Method, the load spectrum analysis and the Miner rule. In order to evaluate the designed structure, the structural test was carried out and its test results were compared with the estimated results. In addition, the blade should be safe from the impact damage due to FOD(Foreign Object Damage) including the bird strike. In order to analize the bird strike penomena on the blade, MSC. Dytran was used, and the applied method Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian was evalud by comparison with the previous study results.

The purposes of this study are to evaluate the power performance through CFD analysis and structural integrity through uni-directional FSI analysis in aerodynamic design and structure design of wind turbine blade. The blade was designed to generate the power of 2MW under the rated wind speed of 11 m/s, consisting of NACA 6 series, DU series and FFA series airfoil. The inside section of the blade was designed into D-spar structure and circular stiffener was placed to reinforce the structural strength in the part of hub. CFD analysis with the application of transitional turbulence model was performed to evaluate the power performance of blade according to the change of TSR and 2.024MW resulted under the condition of rated wind speed. TSR of 9 produced the maximum power coefficient and in this case, Cp was 0.494. This study applied uni-directional FSI analysis for more precise evaluation of structural integrity of blade, and the results of fiber failure, inter fiber failure and eigenvalue buckling analysis were evaluated, respectively. For the evaluation, Puck's failure criteria was applied and the result showed that fiber failure and inter fiber failure did not occur under every possible condition of the analysis. As a result, power performance and structural integrity of 2 MW blade designed in this study turned out to satisfy the initial design goals.

In this study, performance analyses have been conducted for a 5MW class wind turbine blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with K-${\epsilon}$ turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of the blade show different results compared to the case of rigid blade model.

The purpose of this study is to examine the structural stability of a low speed 200 W class gyromill type vertical axis wind turbine system. For the analysis, a commercial code is adopted. The pressure distribution on the rotor blade surface is examined in detail. In order to perform unidirectional FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis, the pressure resulted from CFD analysis has been mapped on the surface of wind turbine as load condition. The rotational speed and gravitational force of wind turbine are also considered. The results of FSI analysis show that the wind turbine reveals an enough structural margin. The maximum structural displacement occurs at trailing edge of blade and the maximum stress occurs at the strut.
