Economic theory tell us, consumers always make a choice to maximize their utility. In the market system, consumers' choices are revealed and policy maker taking into account the aggregated consumers choice such as price, supply and demand. However, water resources as a public goods, therefore typically there is no market and does no aggregated information for residential water use. This study explore the consumers' willingness to pay for higher quality for residential water. Over 1,000 households responded for this survey and willingness to pay has been estimated. Furthermore, consumers' behaviors of residential water are examined. Consumers are willing to reduce the amount of water use with more than 50% of increasing water price, but stay almost constant with less than 25% of increasing which mean that current price level is not high enough to derive water saving. If consumers can have better quality of water, they willing to pay additional 16%, $153\;won/m^3/month$, more than their current price. Based on the derived information, we suggested policy direction for residential water policy.
The study was conducted to examine consumers' awareness and perceptions on forest certification and their willingness to buy and pay price premium for certified wood products especially for selected four wood products. A total of 136 residents in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province were interviewed in the autumn of 2008. Although only 24.3 percent of the consumers are aware of forest certification, 82.4 percent of the respondents recognized the need and significance of forest certification. In general, 77.2 percent of the respondents were willing to buy certified wood products. Majority of the respondents, 84 out of 136 respondents (61.8%) expressed their willingness to pay (WTP) from more than 0 percent to less than 10 percent. Consumers' average WTP for certified wood products was estimated to be 5.6 percent. From the results of the study, lower priced wood products, such as copier paper (WTP=9.8%) and wood frame (WTP=11.6%), have higher price premiums than high priced products, such as wood table (WTP=6.8%) and wood flooring (WTP=7.6%). In conclusion, there could be feasible markets for certified wood products in South Korea as four out of five consumer are willing to pay more for such products. For the forest certification system to be adopted and widely accepted, the perceptions of forest stakeholders including consumers should be further increased.
The objective of this study was to analyze labeling improvements and evaluate willingness to pay for health functional foods with a focus on the caution for intake. For this study, we conducted a survey on health functional food intake behavior, confirmation and improvements of cautions for intake. We assessed the willingness to pay for improvement of the caution for intake. Consumers anticipate improved immune function, and fatigue improvement after consumption of health functional foods. They mainly checked the function components related to efficacy and effectiveness, ingredients and their contents, ingestion amount and method, expiry date and best mode of storage, product name, and cautions associated with ingestion of health functional foods. They has been difficulties in obtaining sufficient caution information for intake from the current labeling method. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the labeling of caution for intake. The analysis indicated that about 5.14% of the respondents were willing to pay more if new labeling was introduces. However, there is still controversy over their safety, which is damaging to the consumers. Therefore, by providing consumers with accurate and detailed information on cautions for intake, it can contribute to securing safety and improving the quality of health functional foods.
The contingent valuation method (CVM) was used along with a questionnaire survey and field research methods to analyze the factors affecting willingness to pay (WTP) for urban parks in Tai'an. The results indicated that roughly 50% of the residents visited the urban parks weekly. Doing physical exercises and viewing topped the list of activities. Residents of different characteristics had different WTPs for the service functions of urban parks. From the two surveys, 60.1% and 61.4% of residents would be willing to pay. The average individual WTPs were 42.2 $yuan{\cdot}a^{-1}$ and 43.1 $yuan{\cdot}a^{-1}$ in the two surveys, and the medianin dividual WTP was 20.0 $yuan{\cdot}a^{-1}$. WTP was mainly affected by satisfaction, and WTP value was mainly affected by education level and income. Other factors had some correlation, but none were significant. Finally, some useful suggestions and references were given to the government in order to enhance the urban park services proposal.
Recently multifaceted advantages of urban agriculture are emerging in civil society and related policy arena such as food safety, environment, and social welfare. This study tried an estimation of residents' willingness-to-pay for urban farming to examine feasibility of using part of urban green infrastructure as urban farm (e.g. allotment garden). A survey targeting Bundang and Dontan new-town residents was carried out and willingness-to-pay for urban farm rental was estimated by contingent valuation method (CVM). The estimated rent was cross-checked with the rental cost and travel cost paid by hobby farm users in the outskirt of metropolitan area. The result of this study showed that the potential demand for urban farming is ample if urban farms or allotment gardens are planned within new development areas. That is, 72.6 percent of new-town residents questioned had intention of using allotment garden within urban parks and green spaces. Estimated willingness-to-pay for renting a plot, $16.5m^2$ of urban farm, was about 236,000 won(KRW), which is higher than rent for a plot of allotment garden which is located out of city. Variables which were statistically significant to estimated willingness-to-pay for urban farming were sex, age, and occupation of respondents, among other explanatory socio-demographic variables, while expected frequency and duration of visit to urban farm were insignificant.
This study investigates the usage behavior and the perception of horticulturalists (horticultural activists) and simple users for urban community gardens. To this end, we surveyed 100 horticulturalists and 213 simple users. Questions in the survey are divided into five categories: 1) usage behavior of community gardens, 2) perception on the benefits of community gardens, 3) perception on the pros and cons of setting up community gardens, 4) willingness to pay for community gardens, 5) importance of specific benefits provided by community gardens. According to the survey, 95.0 percent of horticulturalists and 93.4 percent of simple users supported setting up community gardens. 58.0 percent of horticulturalists and 60.6 percent of simple users were willing to pay their residence tax for community gardens. And the annual membership fee plus resident tax of horticulturalists is 460,455 KW per person, which is 80.6 times more than willingness to pay of simple users. The results of this study can be used as basis data for valuing community gardens.
Blockchain can be highly secured by design and efficient for huge data so that many researchers and practitioners have been interested in blockchain in nature. The principles and applications of blockchain have been investigated by numerous studies and projects, however little is coincident regarding estimating about security investors' additional willingness to pay (WTP) and analyzing relationship with socio-economic characteristics of the investor for blockchain in the securities industry. This study surveyed on 1,000 heads of the household or homemakers that represents population well and estimated additional WTP using one-and-one-half-bounded (OOHB) dichotomous choice (DC) contingent valuation (CV) method. About 63% of respondents had additional WTP for blockchain. The mean WTP was KRW 48,206.92 and the median WTP was KRW 30,967.76. In addition to, the people who are high-income, highly-educated and having more financial asset were more likely to pay extra for their utility from using blockchain. The aggregated additional WTP was about 13% of the 2017 fiscal net income of the security industry. Consequently using blockchain, the strategic developing of securities targeting high-income, highly educated investors having more financial assets can increase commission income, which in turn can increase the company's revenues.
This study is to investigate consumers' acceptance and their willingness to pay for clothes made of materials with low microplastic emissions as an alternative to synthetic fibers made of plastics by applying the contingent valuation method. A nationwide web-based survey was conducted for 1,052 respondents proportional to region, age, and gender during February 2021. More than 75% of the sample expressed intentions to purchase microplastic emission-reducing clothing instead of synthetic fiber clothing, and more than 80% of them have stated their willingness to pay for additional prices. A variation of Heckman's sample selection model was adopted to estimate factors affecting respondents' intentions to pay for additional prices, in which the probit model of intentions to purchase the clothing with alternative materials was used as a sample selection equation. While respondents were sensitive to the amounts of price increases suggested in the CV scenario, they expressed high acceptance and preferences for eco-friendly materials regardless of the microplastic emission-reducing levels. Consumers in the circular economy were willing to pay for the range of 41,000 to 51,000 won for a pair of clothing made with microplastic emission-reducing materials. In addition, as the microplastic emission-reducing rate has increased from 50% to 80%, the willingness to pay estimates were also significantly increased, ranging from 41,000~50,500 to 42,000~51,700 won.
DMB data broadcasting has recently come into the spotlight as a platform for a new business opportunity and an application of various contents. This paper estimates the willingness to pay for the DMB data broadcasting services and explains the demand characteristics for TPEG, BIFS and BWS services, using the Double-bounded dichotomous choice Contingent Valuation Method. Consumers are willing to pay 2,039 Korean won for TPEG service and 1,612 Korean won for BIFS and BWS services per month, which corresponds to the market size 87.6 billion Korean won for TPEG and 195.2 billion Korean won for BWS and BIFS a year respectively. It is also found that the more consumers show usage intentions, have experiences in the similar services, and know of the DMB data broadcasting services, the more they are likely to pay for the DMB data broadcasting services.
This paper attempts to examine household's willingness to pay (WTP) for piped water quality improvement in Wonju, where the local government are planning to implement a piped water quality improvement program. We apply a contingent valuation (CV) method to obtain at least a preliminary evaluation of the WTP. The CV survey was rigorously designed to comply with the guidelines for best-practiced CV studies. We surveyed a randomly selected sample of 250 households in Wonju and asked respondents questions in person-to-person interviews about how much they would be willing to pay for the program. Respondents overall accepted the contingent market and were willing to contribute a significant amount (1,583 to 2,776 won), on average, per household per month. This willingness varies according to individual characteristics such as sex, education level, and income. The aggregate value of the program in Wonju amounts to approximately 1.99 billion won to 3.49 billion won per year. The household values can be the benefits that ensue from the program and compared with the costs of the program to determine whether the program is economically desirable.
