  • An ultrasonic sensor has been widely used as a range sensor for its low cost and capability of detecting some obstacles, such as glasses and black surfaces, which are not well detected by a laser scanner and an IR sensor. Although low-cost sensors are preferred for practical service robots, they suffer from the inaccurate and insufficient range information. This paper proposes a novel approach to obstacle avoidance using low-cost anisotropic ultrasonic sensors with wide beam angle. In this paper, obstacles can be detected by the proposed sensor configuration which consists of one transmitter and three receivers. Because even wide obstacles are represented by a point, which corresponds to the intersection of range data from each receiver of the anisotropic sensor, a robot cannot avoid wide obstacles successfully. This paper exploits the probabilistic mapping technique to avoid collision with various types of obstacles. The experimental results show that the proposed method can robustly avoid obstacles in most indoor environments.

  • In this paper, we propose an in-plane switching (IPS) mode for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that, in principle, is free of retardation of the LC cell. Basically, the optical configuration of the LC cell consists of an A-plate and an LC layer for switching between the dark and bright states. We could achieve a fast response time compared with the conventional in-plane LC cell because the free retardation condition of the proposed LC cell enables us to reduce the cell gap even by quarter-wave retardation without any change of the optimized LC material in the transmissive mode. Experiments for verification of the proposed in-plane switching LC cells have shown a significant reduction of the rising time and falling time simultaneously due to the small cell gap. Furthermore, we also proposed an optical configuration for wide viewing property of the retardation free IPS LCD by applying the optical films. We proved the wide-view property of the retardation free IPS LCD by comparing its optical luminance with the calculated optical property of the conventional IPS LCD.

  • Color Echo-sounder display signals reflected from underwater objects in eight colors according to the strength of the signal. When the sea bottom is hard due to the presence of rocks, etc, the trailing on the reflection become strong signal and soft to presence of mud, etc the trailing on the reflection become weak signal. Strong signals are displayed in the color range, reddish brown, orange and yellow, in descending order of intensity. Weak signals are displayed in the range blue, light blue, cyan and green, in ascending order of intensity. Image of fish schools at or near the sea bottom vary according to the characteristics of the beam angle setting. When the angle is wide, even fish not near the bottom may be recorded as being on the seabed. A narrow angle should, therefore, be selected when you want to get an accurate recording of fish at or near the sea bottom. The condition of the sea bottom can be determinded more easily when the beam angle is wide and pulse with is long. Though the objects could be verified by the type of reflected signals which have been transformed into digital signals strong middle and weak ones, the experiments have in continue under various condition. Futhermore, the methode of measuring temperature inside the sea ought to be examined.

  • We have designed transflective liquid crystal display(LCD) associated with in-plane switching of a LC director driven by fringe-field, unlike other LCD mode. Reflective area consists of a λ/2 compensation film and a LC cell with retardation value(dΔn) of λ/4 with their optic axes making an angle of 15$^{\circ}$ and 75$^{\circ}$ against polarizer, respectively. In the transmissive area, top and bottom polarizers are parallel each other, an LC has a dΔn of λ/2, and another λ/2 compensation film is inserted between the LC cell and bottom polarizer. With the configuration, both devices show dark state initially. When an incident light is 550nm, the device shows wide-viewing-angle characteristics such that in the reflective area the contrast ratio target than 5 exists up to 55$^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions and in transmissive area it exists about 100$^{\circ}$ in vortical direction and 110$^{\circ}$ in horizontal direction.

  • This is a study on rectangular-shaped passive row piles in inclined sand-ground by model tests. The experiment controlled the angle of inclination of ground and induced the ground destruction. We also measured the behavior of row piles, by adjusting the shape, position and spacing of piles. As a result, we confirmed the earth pressure, the lateral resistance, and the effect of depressing on the ground variation working on passive pile. The effect of B-type pile of which the front width is wide is bigger than that of H-type pile of which the side width is wide. We can find out the failure angle of slope, the shared force of pile and soil by using the lateral resistance graph based on slope angle.

  • One-dimensional radar signature, such as range profile, is highly dependent on the aspect angle. Therefore, radar target recognition over wide angular region is a very difficult task. In this paper, we propose the Bayes classifier with Gaussian mixture model for radar target recognition over wide-angular region and compare performances of proposed technique and radar target recognition with subclasses concept in the literature of probability of correct classification ratio.

  • This paper reports a sinusoidal $180^{\circ}$ drive for a permanent magnet (PM) brushless motor employing automatic angle compensator to suppress the driving loss during the wide-range load operation. The proposed drive of the sinusoidal $180^{\circ}$ PM Brushless motor reduced the amplitude of the 3-phase current by compensating for the lead-angle of the fundamental waves of the 3-phase PWM signal. The conventional lead-angle method was implemented using the fixed angle or memorized table, whereas the proposed method was automatically compensated by calculating the angle of the current and voltage signal. The algorithm of the proposed method was verified in a 30 W PM brushless motor system using a PSIM simulator. The efficiency of the conventional method was decreased 90 % to 60 %, whereas that of proposed method maintained approximately 85 % when the load shift was 0 to $0.02N{\cdot}m$. Using an FPGA prototype, the proposed method was evaluated experimentally in a 30 W PM brushless motor system. The proposed method maintained the minimum phase RMS current and 79 % of the motor efficiency under 0 to $0.09N{\cdot}m$ load conditions. The proposed PM brushless motor driving method is suitable for a variety of applications with a wide range of load conditions.

  • Objective : To investigate the potential risk of approach-related complications at different access angles in minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion. Methods : Eighty-six axial magnetic resonance images were obtained to analyze the risk of approach-related complications. The access corridor were simulated at different access angles and the potential risk of neurovascular structure injury was evaluated when the access corridor touching or overlapping the corresponding structures at each angle. Furthermore, the safe corridor length was measured when the corridor width was 18 and 22 mm. Results : When access angle was $0^{\circ}$, the potential risk of ipsilateral nerve roots injury was 54.7% at L4-L5. When access angle was $45^{\circ}$, the potential risk of abdominal aorta, contralateral nerve roots or central canal injury at L4-L5 was 79.1%, 74.4%, and 30.2%, respectively. The length of the 18 mm-wide access corridor was largest at $0^{\circ}$ and it could reach 44.5 mm at L3-L4 and 46.4 mm at L4-L5. While the length of the 22 mm-wide access corridor was 42.3 mm at L3-L4 and 44.1 mm at L4-L5 at $0^{\circ}$. Conclusion : Changes in the access angle would not only affect the ipsilateral neurovascular structures, but also might adversely influence the contralateral neural elements. It should be also noted to surgeons that alteration of the access angle changed the corridor length.
