  • This is the final one of the two companion papers dealing with accuracy of accumulated fatigue damage estimation under wide band process. It is stated that four kinds of wide band models exist: typed of equivalent stress, combined PDF, correction factor, and damage combination. For the idealized ESDs from full scale measurement data on an 8100TEU container vessel, fatigue damages are compared for a narrow band prediction model based on Rayleigh PDF and five wide band fatigue prediction models of Dirlik, Wirsching-Light, Jiao-Moan, Benasciutti and DNV. DNV model consistently overestimates fatigue damages regardless of variation of ESDs. Predictions by Jiao-Moan model, which is understood as standard method for design of offshore platforms, are also in conservative side. Best accuracy is found from the results by Dirlik and Benasciutti models, but Benasciutti model is preferred since it can easily combined with narrow band fatigue damage based on Rayleigh PDF.

  • A wide-band design method of double layered electromagnetic wave absorbers cross-slotted in the second layer(which has very wide band frequency characteristics) is proposed and discussed. The wide-band electromagnetic wave absorber can be designed under some approximations by the the- oretical model using the equivalent material constants method applied to the second layer. Based on the developed model, wide-band electromagnetic wave absorbers with excellent reflectivity characteristics in the frequency range of 30MHz to 3, 170MHz were designed.

A theoretical model using the equivalent material constants method is also proposed to analyze the regions varying sptially in the shape of ferrite. Based on the developed model, wide band electromagnetic wave absorbers with excellent reflectivity frequency charaateristics in the freqency rang eof 30MHz to 2,150MHz or 2,430MHz were designed.

A theoretical model using the equivalent material constants method is also evaluated and proposed for its accuracy by comparison with Hashin-Shtrikman formulas. Based on the developed model, wide band electromagnetic wave absorbers with excellent reflective frequency characteristics in the frequency range of 30MHz to 3, 690MHz were designed.

  • A significant development has been made on a new fatigue damage model applicable to Gaussian wide band stress response spectra using numerical approximation methods such as data processing, time simulation, and regression analysis. So far, most of the alternative approximate models provide slightly underestimated or overestimated damage results compared with the rain-flow counting distribution. A more reliable approximate model that can minimize the damage differences between exact and approximate solutions is required for the practical design of ships and offshore structures. The present paper provides a detailed description of the development process of a new fatigue damage model. Based on the principle of the Gaussian wide band model, this study aims to develop the best approximate fatigue damage model. To obtain highly accurate damage distributions, this study deals with some prominent research findings, i.e., the moment of rain-flow range distribution MRR(n), the special bandwidth parameter μk, the empirical closed form model consisting of four probability density functions, and the correction factor QC. Sequential prerequisite data processes, such as creation of various stress spectra, extraction of stress time history, and the rain-flow counting stress process, are conducted so that these research findings provide much better results. Through comparison studies, the proposed model shows more reliable and accurate damage distributions, very close to those of the rain-flow counting solution. Several significant achievements and findings obtained from this study are suggested. Further work is needed to apply the new developed model to crack growth prediction under a random stress process in view of the engineering critical assessment of offshore structures. The present developed formulation and procedure also need to be extended to non-Gaussian wide band processes.

  • When it comes to naval surface warfare, the probability of detection is an important factor in survivability and the Radar Cross Section(RCS) is a major parameter. In this paper, the RCS reduction technology of the Radar Absorbing Material(RAM) method is carried out for the general frequency range for naval warfare. We set the analysis model with the simplified ship model and the wide band metamaterial which is high-tech radar absorbing materials is selected for the RAM method. The modeling of the wide band metamaterial composed of an MIK surface which has the wide band resonant properties and flexible substance and the electromagnetic absorptions and reflections of the wide band metamaterial has been simulated to explore the performance. Also, the wide band metamaterial is compared with the paint absorber to analyze RCS reduction in terms of RCS values.

  • For the frequency-domain spectral fatigue analysis, the probability density function of stress range needs to be estimated based on the stress spectrum only, which is a frequency domain representation of the response. The probability distribution of the stress range of the narrow-band spectrum is known to follow the Rayleigh distribution, however the PDF of wide-band spectrum is difficult to define with clarity due to the complicated fluctuation pattern of spectrum. In this paper, efforts have been made to figure out the links between the probability density function of stress range to the structural response of wide-band Gaussian random process. An artificial neural network scheme, known as one of the most powerful system identification methods, was used to identify the multivariate functional relationship between the idealized wide-band spectrums and resulting probability density functions. To achieve this, the spectrums were idealized as a superposition of two triangles with arbitrary location, height and width, targeting to comprise wide-band spectrum, and the probability density functions were represented by the linear combination of equally spaced Gaussian basis functions. To train the network under supervision, varieties of different wide-band spectrums were assumed and the converged probability density function of the stress range was derived using the rainflow counting method and all these data sets were fed into the three layer perceptron model. This nonlinear least square problem was solved using Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm with regularization term included. It was proven that the network trained using the given data set could reproduce the probability density function of arbitrary wide-band spectrum of two triangles with great success.

  • In this paper, we analyze and simulate the performance of RAKE receiver for ultra wide band (UWB) systems in indoor multipath radio channel. Pulse position modulation-time hopping (PPM-TH) signal is considered. And we also consider three types of RAKE receivers, which are ideal RAKE, selective RAKE, and partial RAKE receivers. The indoor channel is modeled as the modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model which has been proposed as a UWB channel model by the IEEE group, IEEE 802.15.SG3a.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of pulse position modulation-time hopping ultra wide band (PPM-TH UWB) systems with antenna diversity technique in indoor wireless channel. A modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model is adopted as a UWB indoor channel model. Perfect synchronization between a transmitter and a receiver is assumed. Therefore, coherent equal gain combining (EGC) scheme to collect the energy available in the multipath components is investigated. It is shown that the performance is improved by increasing the number of antennas at the receiver. The results of this paper can be applied to the applications of UWB.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of ultra wide band (UWB) systems in indoor wireless channel in accordance with the number of pulses per bit at transmit signals and the decision types of receiver. The indoor channel is modeled as the modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model which has been proposed as a UWB channel model by the IEEE group, IEEE 802.15.SG3a. Two types of UWB signals are considered One is the pulse position modulation-time hopping (PPM-TH) signal. And the other is the pulse amplitude modulation-direct sequence (PAM-DS) signal. It is assumed that the receiver is an ideal receiver which can receive all signals of the multipath.
