  • Cultural conditions for mass production of the antagonistic bacteria, Bacillus subtills CAP141 against pathogens causing major airborne diseases to apple trees, effects of temperature, pH, carbon and nitrogen source in the culture broth were investigated. The bacterial growth was most vigorous when the temperature and pH of the culture broth was 30~35$^{\circ}$C and 7, respectively. As for carbon source, dextrose was best followed in order by dextrose(monosaccharide) > sucrose(disaccharide) $\geq$ saccharose (market disaccharides) > starch (polysaccharieds). Among different sugars, bacterial growth was favored by in the order of brown, black and white supars, indicating that the bacterial growth might be promoted by the minor elements presented as impurities in the less purified sugars. As for nitrogen source, organic forms were better to bacterial growth than inorganic forms, that is polypeptone was best followed in order by soy sauce, soybeen milk and inorganic nitrogens. Differences in bacterial growth among different forms of inorganic nitrogen were negligible.

  • Catalytic removal of sulfur compounds from heavy naphtha (HN) was investigated using a combination of an oxidation process using hydrogen peroxide and an adsorption process using granulated activated carbon (GAC) and white eggshell (WES). This study investigated the impact of changing several operating parameters on the desulfurization efficiency. Specifically, the volume ratio of $H_2O_2$ to HN (0.01~0.05), agitation speed ($U_{speed}$) of the water bath shaker ($100-500{\pm}1rpm$), pH of sulfur solution (1~5), amount of adsorbent (0.1~2.5 g), desulfurization temperature ($25{\sim}85{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) and contact time (10~180 minutes) were examined. The results indicate that the desulfurization efficiency resulting from catalytic and adsorption processes of GAC is better than that of WES for oxidation and removing sulfur compounds from HN due to its high surface area. The desulfurization efficiency depends strongly on all investigated operating parameters. The maximum removal efficiency of GAC and WES achieved by this study was 86 and 65, respectively.

  • Observed spectra of supernovae allow the empirical classification of supernovae into two basic categories, Type I with little or no evidence of hydrogen, and Type II with obvious evidence for hydrogen. The broad class of Type I can be subdivided depending on whether helium or silicon and other intermediate mass elements is observed. Understanding the physical processes that underlie these classifications---the progenitor evolution. the explosion mechanism, and end products---requires calculation of radiative transfer and model spectra. While most Type II occur in evolved massive stars that undergo core collapse. some may span the dividing line between degenerate and non-degenerate carbon burning and involve both core collapse and thermonuclear explosion. Type Ia are still most plausibly explained as thermonuclear explosions in carbon/oxygen white dwarfs in binary systems. Type Ib reveal helium atmospheres and are probably the result of core collapse in the helium core of a massive star that has lost its hydrogen envelope to a binary companion or to a wind. Type Ic supernovae are probably related to Type Ib but have also lost their helium envelope to reveal a mantle rich in oxygen.

  • Residual stress distribution in injection-molded short fiber composites was determined using layer-removal method. Polysterene with 3 vol% carbon fibers was injection-molded into the tensile specimen. With milling machine layer-removal process was conducted and the curvature data were acquired. Treuting and Read analysis which is assuming isotropic material, and White analysis considering anisotropy due to the fiber orientation were used to calculate residual stress of the flow direction through the thickness direction and compared with each other.

  • Degradation and glucose production from wood chips of white pine (Pinus strobus) and tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) by several white rot fungi were investigated. The highest weight losses from 4 g of wood chips of P. strobus and L. tulipifera by the fungal degradation on yeast extract-malt extract-glucose agar medium were 38% of Irpex lacteus and 93.7% of Trametes versicolor MrP 1 after 90 days, respectively. When 4 g of wood chips of P. strobus and L. tulipifera biodegraded for 30 days were treated with cellulase, glucose was recovered at the highest values of 106 mg/g degraded wood by I. lacteus and 450 mg/g degraded wood by T. versicolor. The weight loss of 10 g of wood chip of L. tulipifera by T. versicolor on the nutrient non-added agar under the nonsterile conditions was 35% during 7 weeks of incubation, and the cumulative amount of glucose produced during this period was 239 mg without cellulase treatment. The activities of ligninolytic enzymes (lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase, and laccase) of fungi tested did not show a high correlation with degradation of the wood chips and subsequent glucose formation. These results suggest that the selection of proper wood species and fungal strain and optimization of glucose recovery are all necessary for the fungal pretreatment of woody biomass as a carbon substrate.

  • Type and three-dimensional morphology of carbides precipitated in the X(X= 1.70, 1.92, 2.21, 2.50, 2.86)%C-5%Cr-5%V-5%Mo-5%W-5%Co multi-component white cast iron were investigated using an optical microscope and SEM. The types of carbides precipitated were MC, M$_2$C and M$_{7}$C$_{3}$. Morphology of the MC carbide took three forms, that it petal-like, nodular and coral-like. MC carbide seemed to change its morphology from petal-like through nodular, and finally to coral-like with an increase in carbon content. M7C carbide was classified into lamellar and plate-like type. The lamellar M$_2$C arbide precipitated in the iron with low molybdenum and tungsten contents, and higher contents of both elements in the iron were needed to form the plate-like M$_2$C carbide. The morphology of M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ was rod-like similar to that observed in high chromium white cast iron. However, cobalt does not affect the type and morphology of precipitated carbides.des.

  • In this work, charcoal making characteristics of Quercus phyllyaeoides (which has been known as one of best raw materials for charcoals) was investigated. Charcoal from Quercus phyllyaeoides had more than 85% of fixed carbon, which is 5~25% higher fixed carbon content than other charcoals. Also specific gravity of this charcoal was more than 1.0, which is quite higher than other black charcoals (average of commercial products: 0.52) or white charcoals (average of commercial products: 0.73). Methylene blue adsorption, pH, and adsorption of water vapour was lower than other commercial charcoals. Carolic value of this charcoal was similar to other commercial products. Far infrared ray's emission from this charcoal was higher than others. Application of charcoal from Quercus phyllyaeoides should be consider the characteristics of this product.

  • The present work proposes a new image analysis method for the evaluation of the multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) distribution in a cement matrix. In this method, white cement was used instead of ordinary Portland cement with MWNT in an effort to differentiate MWNT from the cement matrix. In addition, MWNT-embedded cement composites were fabricated under different flows of fresh composite mixtures, incorporating a constant MWNT content (0.6 wt%) to verify correlation between the MWNT distribution and flow. The image analysis demonstrated that the MWNT distribution was significantly enhanced in the composites fabricated under a low flow condition, and DC conductivity results revealed the dramatic increase in the conductivity of the composites fabricated under the same condition, which supported the image analysis results. The composites were also prepared under the low flow condition (114 mm < flow < 126 mm), incorporating various MWNT contents. The image analysis of the composites revealed an increase in the planar occupation ratio of MWNT, and DC conductivity results exhibited dramatic increase in the conductivity (percolation phenomena) as the MWNT content increased. The image analysis and DC conductivity results indicated that fabrication of the composites under the low flow condition was an effective way to enhance the MWNT distribution.

  • The characteristic of carbon nano fiber (CNF) as electron emitters was described. Carbon nano fiber (CNF) of herringbone was prepared by thermal chemical vapor deposition(CVD), mixed with binders and conductive materials, and then were formed by screen-printing process. In order to increase effectively field emissions, the surface treatment of rubbing & peel-off was applied to the printed CNF emitters on cathode electrode. The measurements of field emission properties were carried out by using a diode structure inline vacuum chamber. CNF of herringbone type showed good emission properties that a turn on field was as low as $2.5V/{\mu}m$ and current density was as large as $0.15mA/cm^2$ of $4.5V/{\mu}m$ with electric field. After the vacuum packaged panel of 5-inch in diagonal, the measured white brightness was as high as $7000cd/m^2$ at 1900V of anode and 700V of gate voltage.
