  • All the seeds of rape (Brassica napus) sprout vegetables were germinated within three days after seeding irrelevant to the light colors. The total fresh weight of rape sprout vegetables at 6 days after seeding have been increased when grown under green and white color lights by 0.339g/10plants and 0.339g/10plants compared with the control. The total flavonoid contents in rape sprouts were increased under red and blue lights by 72.5 and 70.9mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$. Those DPPH radical scavenging activities at 2,000mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$ were increased by 90.0 and 90.3% which were sprouted and grown under blue and white lights. Nitrite radical scavenging activity of sprouts were most decreased compared with the control when grown under the red light by 57.4mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$. And mushroom tyrosinase inhibition activity of rape sprouts was extremely increased under the green light by 22.5mg${\cdot}L^{-1}$.

  • Rose seed shows low germination percentages (about 20%) because it has a high amount of substances that inhibit germination in the pericarp. We investigated the effect of orientation of achene, the day after pollination (DAP), and cold storage with or without half-cut in achene for the germination percentage in R. rugosa. Germination percentages of intact or half-cut achenes were investigated in a 16-hour photoperiod at $25^{\circ}C$ room on basal MS medium for two weeks. In germination percentage, maximum 100% was measured within one week when half-cut achenes were cultured on an orientation that the embryos facing to the light. Half-cut achenes at 90 DAP were germinated 100% regardless of cold storage. Various LED lights (red, blue, yellow, green, and white) were illuminated over the half-cut achenes to gain the effect of light color. Germination percentage of R. rugosa seeds under blue LED reached the greatest with 90% within one week of culture and these seedlings were the best with a steady growth rate. It is concluded that half-cut achenes would be an effective method to improve seed germination in R. rugosa without stratification or scarification. This system could be applied to breeding studies in rose cultivars.

  • $Ce^{4+}$, $Eu^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ co-doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ phosphor was synthesized via solid state reaction method using $CaF_2$, $CaCO_3$ and $SiO_2$ as raw materials for the host and $Eu_2O_3$, $CeO_2$, and $Tb_4O_7$ as activators. The luminescent properties of the phosphor was analysed by spectrofluorophotometer at room temperature. The effect of excitation wavelengths on the luminescent properties of the phosphor i.e. under near-ultraviolet (nUV) and visible excitations was investigated. The emission peaks of $Ce^{4+}$, $Eu^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ co-doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ phosphor lays at 480(blue band), 550(green band) and 611nm (red band) under 380nm excitation wavelength, attributed to the $Ce^{4+}$ ion, $Tb^{3+}$ ion and $Eu^{3+}$ ions respectively. The results reveal that the phosphor emits white light upon nUV (380nm) / visible (465nm) illumination, and a red light upon 395nm / 535nm illumination. RE ions doped $Ca_3Si_3O_8F_2$ is a promising white light phosphor for LEDs. The emission colours can be seen using Commission international de l'eclairage (CIE) co-ordinates. A single host phosphor emitting different colours under different excitations indicates that it is a potential phosphor having applications in many fields.

  • Light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) are a lighting source useful for the precise evaluation of light quality effect on biological systems. Despite the importance of light spectra on the regeneration of land plant protoplasts ("naked cells"), this factor has not been tested yet on protoplasts from multicellular algae. This study reports on the effects of pure primary colors (red, blue, and green), dichromatic (red plus blue, RB, 1 : 2) and white LEDs on protoplast regeneration from male and female Undaria pinnatifida gametophytes. We also evaluated the effect of different light spectra on pigment composition (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c, and fucoxanthine), and the light intensities under the best condition on the regeneration process. In the early stages, blue or RB LEDs increased the percentage of dividing female protoplasts, whereas red, blue, and RB LEDs enhanced that of dividing male protoplasts. In the later stages, RB LEDs showed a positive effect only on the percentage of multiple rhizoid-like protrusions (male gametophyte). They also increased the final area of both regenerated gametophytes. The LEDs did not affect pigment composition in female gametophytes. In male gametophytes, in contrast, they reduced chlorophyll c, while blue, RB, and green LEDs decreased fucoxanthin. Under RB LEDs, the optimal light intensity was 80 µmol photons m-2 s-1 for female gametophytes and 40 to 60 µmol photons m-2 s-1 for male gametophytes. Our results suggest that dichromatic LED illumination (red-blue) improves regeneration of U. pinnatifida gametophyte-isolated protoplasts. Thus, dichromatic LEDs might a suitable light source for enhancing protoplast regeneration in brown seaweeds.

  • The physico-chemical properties of broccoli sprouts cultivated in a plant factory system with different lighting conditions were investigated. We reported that there were significant differences among the chemical and nutritional properties of the broccoli sprouts grown under different light sources. Two kinds of sugars (glucose and fructose) were detected in the plants. The amount of glucose was 2.94~3.12% and that of fructose was 1.54~2.04%. Total chlorophyll was $1,157{\pm}0.004$ mg% and chlorophyll-a $777{\pm}0.01$ mg%. All over the test materials, 2 kinds of organic acids (citric acid and malic acid) were detected. The level of citric acid was 908~1,136 mg% and its highest level was under the (Blue LED) light source. The level of malic acid was 514~834 mg% and its highest level was under the (Red LED) light source. Seven different minerals were also analyzed. The amount of K was 518 mg% and its amount was significantly higher than that of Mg or Na. There were also negligible amounts of Zn, Fe and Cu. The amounts of vitamin A, C and E under the Red LED were, $860.62{\pm}0.02\;{\mu}gRE$, $134.570{\pm}0.14$ mg% and $1.44{\pm}0.1$ IU. The amounts under the Blue LED were, $432.48{\pm}0.05\;{\mu}gRE$, $137.05{\pm}0.1$ mg% and $1.11{\pm}0.12$ IU. The amounts under both Red and Blue LEDs were, $667.33{\pm}0.11\;{\mu}gRE$, $118.50{\pm}0.09$ mg% and $1.47{\pm}0.1$ IU. And finally, the amounts under a White LED were, $640.25{\pm}0.08\;{\mu}gRE$, $119.87{\pm}0.07$ mg% and $1.31{\pm}0.15$ IU. In this study, significant changes were shown in the chemical and nutritional properties of the broccoli sprouts. These findings indicate that LED light sources stimulated germination of the plants.

  • BACKGROUND: Horticultural plant growth under field and/or greenhouse conditions is affected by the climate changes (e.g., temperature, humidity, and rainfall). Therefore investigation of hydroponics on field horticultural crops is necessary for year-round production of the plants regardless of external environment changes under plant factory system with artificial light sources. METHODS AND RESULTS: Common sage (Salvia plebeia), nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), and hooker chive (Allium hookeri) plants were hydroponically culturing in the plant factory with blue-red-white LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) and fluorescent lights (FLs). Leaf numbers of common sage under mixture LED and FL treatments were 134% and 98% greater, respectively than those in the greenhouse condition. In hooker chives, unfolded leaf numbers were 35% greater under the artificial lights and leaf elongation was inhibited by the conventional sunlight compared to the artificial light treatments. Absorption pattern of NO3-N composition in hydroponic solution was not affected by the different light qualities. CONCLUSION(S): Plant factory system with different light qualities could be applied for fresh-leaf production of common sage, nasturtium, and hooker chive plants culturing under field and/or greenhouse. Controlled light qualities in the system resulted in significantly higher hydroponic growth of the plants comparing to conventional greenhouse condition in present.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of light energy on the tooth whitening effect of bleaching agent in vitro..Extracted human mandibular molars were sectioned to 2 fragments(mesial. distal) and lingual portions of crown were used in this study. All specimens were stained using a red wine for 24 hours and immersed in artificial saliva. Specimens divided into four groups, group 1 and 2 light-activated by LumaCool (LED, LumaLite, Inc., Spring Valley, USA), group 3 and 4 light-activated by FlipoWhite2 (Plasma acr lamp, Lokki. Australia). Group 1 and 3 bleached with Luma White (LumaLite, Inc., Spring Valley, USA), group 2 and 4 bleached with Polaoffice(SDI, Victoria, Australia). Bleaching treatment performed during 10 minutes every 24 hours and repeated 6 times. During bleaching treatment, distal fragments was light-activated (L) but mesial fragments was not(NL). Shade assessment employed before and after bleaching treatment using spectrophotometer. The results of the change in shade was compared and analysed between NL and L by using paired-sample T test with 95 % level of confidence. There were no significant differences between NL and L with a few exceptions. In group 2, $a^*$ value more change in L, in group 3, $b^*$ value more change in L, in group 4, $a^*$ value less change in L. After bleaching, $L^*$ value and ${\Delta}E$ increased in all groups and the value of $a^*$ and $b^*$ decreased in all groups. Within the limitation of this test conditions, the results of this study indicate that the light energy has no obvious improving impact on the tooth whitening effect of a bleaching agent.

  • The objective of this study was to know the growth response and light use efficiency of leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) 'Yorum Cheongchukmyeon' (green leaf lettuce) and 'Hongyom Jeokchukmyeon' (red leaf lettuce) under different RGB (Red:Green:Blue) ratio in a closed-type plant factory system. The plants were hydroponically cultured with a 12-h photoperiod at $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$, 60~70% RH and 600~900 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ $CO_2$. The light treatments were combined in three colors LEDs (red, blue, and white) and RGB ratios (1 : 4 : 5, 5 : 0 : 5, 5 : 2 : 3, 7 : 0 : 3, 7 : 1 : 2, and 8 : 1 : 1), however, as the light intensities of treatments were different. Growth characteristic response in both lettuces were significantly as affected by interaction between cultivar and light quality, when they were grown under different light quality conditions. Plant heights of green and red leaf lettuce were the lowest in 1 : 4 : 5 and 8 : 1 : 1, respectively. The highest length and number of leaf were showed 8 : 1 : 1 and 7 : 0 : 3 for the green and 5 : 2 : 3 and 8 : 1 : 1 for the red, respectively. Shoot dry weights of green and red leaf lettuce were the heaviest in 7 : 0 : 3 and 8 : 1 : 1, respectively. Leaf width and leaf shape index were significant about cultivar and light quality. Leaf widths of green and red leaf lettuce were the largest in 8 : 1 : 1 and 5 : 2 : 3, respectively. Leaf shape index of green and red leaf lettuce were the largest in 1 : 4 : 5 and 1 : 4 : 5, respectively. Shoot fresh weight and light use efficiency were significant about cultivar and light quality. Shoot fresh weights of green and red leaf lettuce were the heaviest in 7 : 0 : 3 and 8 : 1 : 1, respectively. Light use efficiencies of green and red leaf lettuce were the highest in 7 : 0 : 3 and 5 : 0 : 5, respectively. These results suggested that the ratio of RGB was 5~7 : 0~2 : 1~3 to cultivate leaf lettuce in a plant factory system.

  • An improvement for the efficiency of the $Sr_{2}SiO_{4}:Eu$ yellow phosphor under the $450{\sim}470\;nm$ excitation range have been achieved by adding the co-doping element ($Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ba^{2+}$) in the host. White LEDs were fabricated through an integration of an blue (InGaN) chip (${\lambda}_{cm}=450\;nm$) and a blend of two phosphors ($Mg^{2+},\;Ba^{2+}\;co-doped\;Sr_{2}SiO_{4}:Eu$ yellow phosphor+CaS:Eu red phosphor) in a single package. The InGaN-based two phosphor blends ($Mg^{2+},\;Ba^{2+}\;co-doped\;Sr_{2}SiO_{4}:Eu$ yellow phosphor+CaS:Eu red phosphor) LEDs showed three bands at 450 nm, 550 nm and 640 nm, respectively. The 450 nm emission band was due to a radiative recombination from an InGaN active layer. This 450 nm emission was used as an optical transition of the $Mg^{2+},\;Ba^{2+}\;co-doped\;Sr_{2}SiO_{4}:Eu$ yellow phosphor+CaS:Eu red phosphor. As a consequence of a preparation of white LEDs using the $Mg^{2+},\;Ba^{2+}\;co-doped\;Sr_{2}SiO_{4}:Eu$ yellow phosphor+CaS:Eu red phosphor yellow phosphor and CaS:Eu red phosphor, the highest luminescence efficiency was obtained at the 0.03 mol $Ba^{2+}$ concentration. At this time, the white LEDs showed the CCT (5300 K), CRI (89.9) and luminous efficacy (17.34 lm/W).
