We studied the source mechanisms of very-long-period event recorded at seismic station WIZ near White Island Volcano, New Zealand on August 4, 2012. Since seismic data at only one station were available, we conducted moment tensor inversion using three simplified models (explosion, crack, and pipe models). To constrain the moment tensor solution of seismic event, we computed synthetic data for each model to compare with observed data. Type and orientation for the best model is a crack at a depth of 1600 m with a dip of $80^{\circ}NE$ and a strike of $N80^{\circ}W$. We interpret that a deep explosion may have opened a crack for gases to escape, and the upward gas flow triggered the surface explosions four hours later as confirmed by a webcam. The interpretation based on moment tensor inversion is consistent with previous studies of geochemical data of the volcanic island.
160 day-old chicks of Rhode Island Red, White Leghorn and their crossbred with Naked neck chicken were reared upto 23 weeks of age at Bangladesh Agricultural University Poultry Farm in order to study the economic traits of birds. RIR had highest body weight gain (1494.39 g), followed by White Leghorn (1392.57 g), $RIR{\times}NN$ (1268.9 g) and White Leghorn ${\times}$ NN (1266.73 g). RIR showed significant difference (p < 0.05) to other groups of birds in body weight gain but difference were insignificant in between other birds. RIR showed better feed conversion ratio (4.72:1) but difference were insignificant (p > 0.05), however, $RIR{\times}NN$ exceled White Leghorn ${\times}$ NN in feed efficiency. $RIR{\times}NN$ had highest livability (90%) while White Leghorn had lowest (85%). Earlier sexual maturity was observed in White Leghorn (163 days) than RIR (168 days) but cross breds were similar in age at sexual maturity RIR were heaviest (1538.89 g) at age at sexual maturity, on the other hand $RIR{\times}NN$ were heavier (1315.39 g) than $WL{\times}NN$ (1306.77 g) at sexual maturity.

Feeding habits of white croacker, Pennahia argentata, were analyzed by using the stomach contents of 153 specimens caught by bottom trawl from May 2011 to March 2012 in the Sejon island, Korea. To know feeding habits of the white croacker, P. argentata, a species composition and it's fluctuation were analyzed based on growth. White croacker, P. argentata caught in the area composes 15 species. The most species in an number of the prey was Macrura which was occupied at 66.4% from whole prey, the second most species was Pisces which was occupied at 20.3%. The most species in an wet-weight of the prey was Pisces which was 49.3% out of the whole specimens. The second most species was Macrura which was 43.3%. The frequency occurrence of the prey was Macrura which was 68.6%, the next one was Pisces which was 28.8%. The highest Index of Relative Importance (IRI) of the prey was Macrura which was 78.2%, the next one was Pisces which was 28.8%. A number of the prey per specimen of small, middle and large class were 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, respectively. A wet weight of the prey per specimen of small, middle and large class were 0.2, 0.6, 0.2 g, respectively.
To estimate the shear-velocity ($v_s$) structure beneath the WIZ station on White Island in New Zealand, we applied receiver function (RF) inversion and H-${\kappa}$ stacking methods to 362 teleseismic events (Mw > 5.5) recorded during April 20, 2007 to September 6, 2013. Using 71 RFs with errors less than 20% after 200 iterative computations, we determined that the depth to Moho of $v_s$ = 4.35 km/s is $24{\pm}1km$ within a 15 km radius of the station. In an 1-d $v_s$ model derived by RF inversions, a 4-km thick low-velocity layer (LVL) at depths of 18 ~ 22 km was identified in the lower crust. This LVL, which is 0.15 km/s slower than the rocks above and below it, may indicate the presence of a deep magma reservoir. The H-${\kappa}$ stacking method yielded an estimate of the depth to the Moho of 24.5 km, which agrees well with the depth determined by RF inversions. The low $v_p/v_s$ ratio of 1.64 may be due to the presence of gas-filled rock or hot crystallizing magma.
Clinical findings of white muscle disease or dystrophia were reported in Hokkaido horses from 1960. This disease was caused by selenium and $\alpha$-tocopherol deficiency. Therefore, this study were conducted to measure serum selenium and $\alpha$-tocopherol levels in Cheju island horses using feedstuffs containing volcanic ashes. The results were as follows : 1. The mean values of serum total selenium and $\alpha$-tocophcrol were $91.90{\pm}49.18ppb$(13.20ppb-193.80ppb) and $0.345{\pm}0.253mg/dl$(0.056mg/dl-1.159mg/dl) in female respectively. There were no significant relation between serum total selenium and $\alpha$-tocopherol levels. 2. 22%(15 of 68) of the horse examined showed selenium levels below 50ppb. 11.8%(8 of 68) showed $\alpha$-tocopherol levels lower than 0.10mg/dl. These results could be useful to diagnose of white muscle disease of Cheju island foals and quality control of feedstuffs of pregnant mares.
One specimen of Epinephelus areolatus, belonging to the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, was collected by a hook from commercial longline fisheries in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is mostly similar to E. chlorostigma, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having larger brown spots and a white posterior margin on the caudal fin. We propose a new Korean name "Dae-moon-ba-ri" for E. areolatus.
A single specimen of Epinephelus lanceolatus, belonging to Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, was newly collected from Jeju Island, South Korea, in December 2009. Epinephelus lanceolatus is characterized by anterior lateral-line scales with branched tubules, cycloid scales, irregular white spots, and fins with numerous small black spots. We propose a Korean name, "Dae-wang-ba-ri' for this species.
This report presents a summary of the Legacy of AKARI: A Panoramic View of the Dusty Universe meeting held between 27-29th February 2012 at Jeju Island, South Korea.
Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) balance technique was used to determine energy balance in Rhode Island Red (RIR) and White Leghorn (WL) laying hens fed maize-and broken rice (BR)- based diets. Carbon and nitrogen intake and outgo were determined for three days on ad libitum fed diets followed by 2/3 of ad libitum intake for next three days. Carbon analysis was done by using four 'U' tubes in which carbon dioxide released during bomb calorimetry was absorbed on drierite in tube 1 and 2 whereas tube 3 and 4 contained sodalime self indicating granule. Carbon in $CO_2$ was determined by an open circuit respiration system. Energy retention (E, kcal) was calculated as E = 12.386 C (g) - 4.631 N (g). By regressing metabolisable energy (ME) intake on energy balance, maintenance ME requirement of RIR was 128 whereas, that of WL hens was $144kcal/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$. Effciency of utilization of ME for maintenance from BR-based diet in RIR hens was equal but in WL hens it was 11% less than maize-based diet.
Greate white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, are found in almost all the temperate and tropical coastal waters around the world. There have been 19 appearances reported in Korean coastal waters since June 1996 and seven shark attacks have been reported. There are about 400 species of sharks in the world, and 41 species of them have been found in Korean coastal waters. Thirteen of them belong to the Carcharhinidae family, and five of them belong to the Squalidae family. Of these sharks, 15 species of them live off of the East coast, 18 species live off of the West coast, and the other 40 species are distributed around Jeju Island and the South coast. Eleven species of them, including the great white shark, live off of all the coastal waters of Korea.
