Effects of the Grinding Conditions on the Machining Elasticity Parameter

  • The grinding force generated during the grinding process causes an elastic deformation of the workpiece, grinding wheel, and machine system. Thus, the true depth of cut is always smaller than the apparent depth of cut. This is known as machining elasticity phenomenon. The machining elasticity parameter is defined as a ratio between the true depth of cut and the apparent depth of cut. It is an important factor to understand the material removal mechanism of the grinding process. To increase productivity, the value of this machining elasticity parameter must be large. Therefore, it is essential to know the characteristics of this parameter. The objective of this research is to study the effect of the major grinding conditions, such as table speed, depth of cut, on this parameter experimentally, Through this research, it is found that this parameter value is increasing when the table speed is decreasing or the depth of cut is increasing. Also, this parameter value depends on the grinding mode (up grinding, down grinding).

  • This paper presents the optimization of suspension characteristics under the condition of curved track railway vehicles. Reducing lateral acceleration on curved track is an issue for high-speed railway vehicles. In terms of curved track running environments, reducing the lateral vibration of railway vehicles is critical to safety and curving performance. The properties of lateral damping and stiffness of both primary and secondary suspension show effect on wheel-set, bogie and car-body. Analysis for reducing the lateral vibration of rail vehicles with respect to the characteristics of both primary and secondary suspension has been developed using ADAMS/Rail. Response Surface Method has been chosen for the purpose of verifying correlation effects among design parameters. Also, this paper suggests the method for designing optimal suspension of railway vehicles on curved track. The optimization result indicates decrement of lateral acceleration on wheel-set by 3% and bogie by 1% on curved track. Finally, this paper comes to the conclusion that suspension system of railway vehicle (KTX I) is properly designed when regarding lateral vibration of railway vehicle on diverse curved track condition.

  • This investigation reports the grinding characteristics of quartz. Grinding experiments were performed at various grinding conditions including wheel mesh, table speed and depth of cut. The grinding forces and specific grinding energies were measured to compare the grindability of quartz with those of structural ceramics such as A1$_2$O$_3$, SiC, Si$_3$N$_4$ and ZrO$_2$. Surface roughness was also measured with tracer and the ground surfaces were observed with SEM. The chip formation energy of quartz was about 6J/㎣, which is quite smaller than those of structural ceramics. Although plastic flows are occured in Si$_3$N$_4$ and ZrO$_2$, micro/macro cracks are occured in ground surface of quartz like in A1$_2$O$_3$ and SiC.

  • Cylindrical plunge grinding is widely used for final machining process of precision parts such as automobile, aircraft, measurement units. But in order to make parts which have high precision accuracy and high surface integrity, it is necessary to consider grinding characteristics due to accumulation phenomena of grinding wheel in plunge grinding process. In this study, in order to examine closely plunge grinding process, grinding power, grinding force, real depth of cut are monitored in transient state, steady state and spark out state. As the result, it is shown that grinding power and force are affected by dressing condition, depth of cut and speed ratio and that there exist threshold grinding force and it also affected by dressing condition.   • To improve quality of the ground surface, we have to consider a number of parameters. But it is difficult to make experiment with many parameters. Most of all experiments try to search optimal grinding condition with conservative factors such as feed rate, depth of cut, wheel rotating speed, etc. But This paper attempts to view the significance of some different factors effecting on the surface roughness by introducing helical scan grinding method and material removal rate. The design of experiment is used to find the optimal grinding condition which minimizes the surface roughness value bout optical glass material. To analyze experimental results, ANOVA(ANalysis of VAriation) is used. Discussion on the result about helical scan grinding is also given.

  • We explored a new rough grinding technique on optics materials such as Zerodur. The facility used is a NANOFORM-600 diamond turning machine with a custom grinding module and range of diamond resin bond wheel. The grinding parameters such as workpiece rotation speed depth of cut and feed rate were altered while grinding the workpiece surfaces of 20m in diameter. Surface roughness is measured by Form Talysurf series2. Our target is to define grinding conditions producing the surface roughness better than 0.02${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Ra and the form accuracy of around 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ PV.

  • Biaxial fracture behavior of alumina specimens with the diameter of 20mm and four kinds of thickness of 1.9, 2.3, 2.6 and 2.8mm was studied by the ball-on-3-ball test and the fracture results were analyzed by he analysis of variance (ANOCA), The strength measured with the down speed prescribed in ASTM showed that the measured strength was not dependent on the thickness of the specimens. Equivalent radius and crack-braching number were observed to increase lineraly with the thickness of the specimens. The jog direction was observed to study the effect of grinding direction on surface flaws. It is though that the surface finishing with #600 grit diamond wheel did not affect the surface flaws of the specimens.

  • Security robot has gradually developed and deployed in order to protect civilian's lives as well as fortune and subjugate the shortcomings of CCTV which lacks of mobility. We have developed a security robot for outdoor environment and the main purpose of the driving mechanism is to overcome the bumps or projections with high speed. The robot platform consists of 4 omnidirectional wheel-based driving mechanisms and suspension for each driving mechanism. In this paper, principal suspension parameters of outdoor security robot for overcoming obstacles with stability are studied and approximately optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) since it is difficult to find the exact relationship between suspension parameters and the shock, which is significantly associated with stability of the robot, at the robot platform. Simulation using ADAMS is conducted for assessing the feasibility of optimized design parameters.
