  • White salted noodles and pan bread were prepared from Korean wheats with 1Dx2.2+1Dy12 subunits in high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) to evaluate the suitability for end-use products through the comparison with US wheats with various classes and commercial wheat flours. Korean wheat flours with 1Dx2.2+1Dy12 subunits showed higher SDS sedimentation volume than US wheat flours with similar protein content. Compared to wheat flours with similar protein content and SDS sedimentation volume, water absorption percent of Korean wheat flours using a mixograph was higher than that of US wheat flours, but similar to commercial wheat flours. Mixograph mixing time was similar to hard wheat flours and commercial noodle flours. Optimum water absorption percent of noodle dough from Korean wheat flours was higher than that of US wheat flours. Noodle sheets from Korean wheat flours with 1Dx2.2+ 1Dy12 subunits showed lower L values, higher a values and similar b values compared to commercial noodle flours. Hardness of cooked noodles from Korean wheat flours 1Dx2.2+1Dy12 subunits correlated positively with protein content, NIRS hardness, mixograph water absorption and gluten yield of flours. Korean wheat flours with 1Dx2.2+1Dy12 subunits showed lower loaf volume and harder crumb firmness than hard wheat flours and commercial bread wheat flours in spite of similar protein quantity and quality to hard wheat flours.

  • Experiments were conducted to determine the physicochemical properties for 1.382 tested wheat harvested in 1977. All the tested wheats had a milling yield rate of 49 to 71.5 percent. The cross combination involving S.son, Caprock and CI 12703 was generally the higher in flour yield-Flour protein content ranged from about 7 percent up to about 17 percent and sedimentation values ranged from below 20 cc to 70 cc. The cross combinations involving Bb #1 gave higher protein content and higher sedimentation values than the other combinations. The distribution of the Pelshenke value was from less 20 min. to more than 180 min. Specific sedimentation values of the 329 tested wheats showed 8.1 percent to be hard quality, while 54.4 percent were of soft quality. Intermediate wheats accounted for 37.5 percent. The lines having high milling yield rate, protein content and sedimentation value from the 329 tested wheats were Strampelli \times 69D-3607/Jogwang. S.son \times Caprock. Suweon #185 \times Toropi and Suweon #185 \times Ciano. The varieties or lines including Pribog, CI 14496 and Sturdy \times Scout/ Strampelli \times Bb-Cno showed high milling yield but low protein content and low sedimentation values. being under 9 percent and 30 cc respectively.

  • Three winter wheats and 3 triticales grown in Korea were compared for nutritional quality and food-making performance. The flour yield of triticale was 54 % below that of wheat, while triticale was higher in protein than wheat. The amino acid composition of triticale flours was similar to that of wheat flours. The essensial amino acid compositions were slightly higher in triticale flours. Noodles of acceptable quality were produced from triticale flours. The bread produced from triticale flours was somewhat inferior to that from soft wheat flours. The triticale flours produced bread of slightly lower quality than the soft wheat flours. The specific loaf volume were lower, the grain more rough, the texture slightly harsher and the crumb color slightly darker.

  • Fusarium graminearum Schwabe causes Fusarium head blight (FHB), a devastating disease that leads to extensive yield and quality loss of wheat and other cereal crops. Twelve isolates of F. graminearum were collected from naturally infected spikes of wheat from Assiut Egypt. These isolates were compared using SRAP. The results indicated distinct genetic groups exist within F. graminearum, and demonstrated that these groups have different biological properties, especially with respect to their pathogenicity on wheat. There were biologically significant differences between the groups; with group (B) isolates being more aggressive towards wheat than groups (A) and (C). Furthermore, Trichoderma harzianum (Rifai) and Bacillus subtilis (Ehrenberg) which isolated from wheat kernels were screened for antagonistic activity against F. graminearum. They significantly reduced the growth of F. graminearum colonies in culture. In order to gain insight into biological control effect in situ, highly antagonistic isolates of T. harzianum and B. subtilis were selected, based on their in vitro effectiveness, for greenhouse test. It was revealed that T. harzianum and B. subtilis significantly reduced FHB severity. The obtained results indicated that T. harzianum and B. subtilis are very effective biocontrol agents that offer potential benefit in FHB and should be harnessed for further biocontrol applications. The accurate analysis of genetic variation and studies of population structures have significant implications for understanding the genetic traits and disease control programs in wheat. This is the first known report of the distribution and genetic variation of F. graminearum on wheat spikes in Assiut Egypt.

  • In Bangladesh, increases in the tropospheric ozone ($O_3$) concentration and in soil salinization may lead to crop damage. To clarify the effects of $O_3$ and/or soil salinity on Bangladeshi wheat cultivars, BAW1059 (salt-tolerant) and Shatabdi (salt-sensitive) were exposed to 70-day treatments with $O_3$ (charcoal-filtered air (CF), $1.0{\times}O_3$, and $1.5{\times}O_3$) and different levels of soil salinity (0, 4, and $8dS\;m^{-1}$). In both cultivars, the whole-plant dry mass and grain yield were significantly reduced by exposure to $O_3$. Increased soil salinity caused significant reductions in whole-plant growth and yield in Shatabdi, but the reductions were negligible in BAW1059. No significant interactions between $O_3$ and salinity were detected for growth, yield, and leaf gas exchange parameters in both cultivars. We concluded that the effects of $O_3$ are not ameliorated by soil salinity in two Bangladeshi wheat cultivars, regardless of their salinity tolerance.

  • This study was carried out to establish the optimum organic fertilization and microbial compost on wheat cultivation in order to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and improve the quality of wheat. The tests resulted in a yield of organic fertilization of 2~6% lower than the yield of standard 4.16 Ton/ha (a yield more than that of microbial compost). The recession was not statistically significant. The trial which involved organic fertilizer that had a yield of 800 kg/ha and microbial compost which had a yield of 2,000 kg/ha resulted in 96% yield of standard trial. The quality of flour in the manure was 50% less during the trial and was not making a good result. In protein content and SDS-sedimentation volume, standard trial had the highest yield in test trial (standard > miccompost > organic fertilization). However, Ash content was not statistically significant.

  • This study was performed to determine most appropriate mixed ratio of brewers dried grain to wheat bran as a nutrient supplement in the plastic vinyl bag cultivation of Grifola frondosa. In the examination of an appropriate nutrient source, the IV substrate formulation (80 : 10 : 10, oak sawdust : wheat bran : brewers dried grain) resulted in 71.6 days to harvest and the highest yield of 142.6 g/bag. On the other hand, the investigation of the optimal mixing ratio of beer waste to wheat bran showed that the III substrate formulation (80 : 5 : 15, oak sawdust : wheat bran : brewers dried grain) resulted in the least days to harvest (61.8 days), with the highest yield of 140.8 g/bag.

  • The preaent study was conducted to investigate the effect of mixed seeding of three wheat variwties, 'Anzunbaengimil', 'Jokyoung', and 'Sooan', on agricultural characteristics and quality of plants to select the most suitable mixed seeding ratio. We observed that the yield of plants obtained from the mixed seeding combinations was higher than those obtained from single seeding of the three varieties. The yield was high, especially for the combinations 'Sooan' and 'Anzunbaengimil' (80 and 20%, respectively) and 'Sooan' and 'Jokyoung' (90 and 10%, respectively). The protein content of the seedlings obtained from the above two combinations was higher than in the seedling of 'Sooan'. Based on our results, we suggest that mixed seeding of wheat varieties is more effective than single seeding in improving the yield and quality of plants obtained from mixed seeding.

  • This study was to optimize the harvest time of several winter cereal forage crops. Barley, rye, oat, triticale and wheat were evaluated for the quantity and quality of hay and silage at four different harvesting stages, including heading, 10 days after heading (DAH), 20 DAH and 30 DAH. Barley and wheat harvested at 20 DAH, and oat and triticale at 30 DAH showed maximum dry matter yield. Crude protein content of barley, wheat, triticale and oat decreased significantly with advancing crop maturity. Mean crude protein content was the highest in rye and the lowest in oat. The NDF and ADF content of barley, wheat, triticale and oat decreased with late harvest, while rye increased. Maximum total digestible nutrients (TDN) content was recorded in barley and wheat harvested at 20 DAH, in triticale and oat at 30 DAH, and in rye at heading. The maximum TDN content of silage, 66.98%, was recorded in barley, followed by wheat, triticale, oat and rye. However, The crude protein, NDF and ADF of silage was 1 to 4 times higher than those of hay. In this study, barley harvested at 20-25 DAH, wheat and triticale at 30 DAH, and rye at heading provided a good compromise between dry matter yield and forage quality. At this stage, a sufficient quantity of fodder with moderate forage quality was obtained.

  • Flowering time of either early or late is one of the crucial parameters that determine the crop productivity. Therefore, elucidation of regulatory mechanisms of flowering time should contribute to breeding for yield enhancement. However, comprehensive explanation on molecular mechanism of flowering has not yet been reported in hexaploidy common wheat (Triticum asetivum L.). The mechanism of flowering in wheat has been studied mostly using flag leaf or floral meristem. The exposed peduncle, which is a shoot part between bottom of the spike and flag leaf, could be an important tissue that is responsible for flowering through various molecules expressing. To clarify for transcriptomic dynamics in the wheat peduncle that was uncovered by leaf sheath of flag leaf, RNA sequencing and transcriptomic analysis were conducted. With this, we also analyzed other transcriptomic results deposited in the public DB to identify genes specially expressed in peduncle tissue at transition from vegetative to reproductive phase. The obtained results will provide valuable information to understand the role of peduncle for flowing regulation in wheat aimming for elucidation of the regulatory mechanism of wheat flowering.
