  • The Tonle Sap, Cambodia, is a huge lake and periodically flooded due to monsoon climate. The incoming water causes intensive flooding that expands the lake over vast floodplain and wetland consisting mainly of forests and shrubs. Monitoring the water-level change over the floodplain is essential for flood prediction and water resource management. A main objective of this study is flood monitoring over Tonle Sap area using ALOS PALSAR. To study double-bounce effects in the lake, backscattering effect using ALOS PALSAR dual-polarization (HH, HV) data was examined. InSAR technique was applied for detection of water-level change. HH-polarization interferometric pairs between wet and dry seasons were best to measure water level change around northwestern parts of Tonle Sap. The seasonal pattern of water-level variations in Tonle Sap studied by InSAR method is similar to the past and altimeter data. However, water level variation measured by SAR was much smaller than that by altimeter because the DInSAR measurement only represents water level change at a given region of floodplain while altimeter provides water level variation at the central parts of the lake.

  • In this study, the effects of polymer concentration and additive in the formation of asymmetric nanofiltration (NF) membrane were evaluated. The membrane fabrication was carried out via dry/wet phase inversion technique. A new formulation of dope solution with polymer concentration ranging between 17 wt% to 21 wt% and the present of additive was developed. The results show that the permeate flux gradually decreases as polymer concentration increased, until $2.5969L/m^2h$ and increased the rejection up to 98.7%. Addition of additive, polyethylene glycol 600 increased dyes rejection up to 99.8% and decreased the permeate flux to $3.6501L/m^2h$. This indicates that the addition of polyethylene glycol additive led towards better membrane performance. The morphological characteristics of NF membrane were analysed using a Scanning Electron Microscopy.

  • Ground improvement technique of cement stabilization via Deep Soil Mixing with dry cement is gaining popularity, particularly in Japan and other parts of Southeast Asia and in Scandinavia. Cement can be mixed with deep soft clay deposits, typical of marine environments, to improve the bearing capacity and/or reduce the compressibility of the material so that an otherwise poor site can be developed. However, the strength/deformation behaviour and resulting soil structure of the clay-cement mixture is presently not well understood with respect to both dry and wet mix methods. An extensive laboratory test was carried out to determine the mechanical characteristics of kaolin-cement, with some brief examination of the effects of curing environment. Laboratory tests include triaxial tests, unconfined compression tests, isotropic consolidation testis and oedometer tests. Cement contents up to 10 percent were considered and water curing was employed. Samples were cured for 7 to 112 days while submerged in distilled water. Conventional laboratory tests were also performed. In this paper, the laboratory testing program is described and various sample preparation techniques are discussed. Preliminary triaxial compression test results and trends at varying moisture contents, cement contents, confining pressures and curing times will be presented.

  • In this study, we calculated a space-time variation of GPS precipitable water vapor using GPS meteorology technique during a progress of the typhoon EWINIAR had made an effect on Korean peninsular at 10 July, 2006. We estimated tropospheric dry delay and wet delay for one hourly using 22 GPS permanent stations and precipitable water vapor was conversed by using surface meteorological data. The Korean weighted mean temperature and air-pressure of versa-reduction to the mean sea level have been used for an accuracy improvement of GPS precipitable water vapor estimation. Finally, we compared MTSAT water vapor image, radar image and precipitable water vapor map during a passage of the typhoon EWINIAR.

  • The Pseudo-MOSFET measurements technique has been used for the electrical characterization of the nano SOL Silicon islands for the Pseudo-MOS measurements were fabricated by selective etching of surface silicon film with dry or wet etching to examine the effects of the etching process on the device properties. The characteristics of the Pseudo-MOS was not changed greatly in the case of thick SOI film which was 205 nm. However the characteristics of the device was dependent on etching process in the case of less than 100 nm thick SOI film. The sub 100nm SOI was obtained by thinning the silicon film of standard thick SOI. The thickness of SOI film was varied from 88 nm to 44 nm by chemical etching. The etching process effects on the properties of pseudo-MOSFET characteristics, such as mobility, turn-on voltage, and drain current transient. The etching process dependency is greater in the thinner SOI and related to original SOI wafer quality.

  • The use of cathodic protection for metals can be achieved by sacrificial anode CP or impressed current CP, or a combination of both. Cathodic protection is a highly effective anti-corrosion technique for submerged metals or metals in soil. But because the non-immersion atmospheric automobile environment is a high resistance environment, it is limited by fundamental cathodic protection. However, the application of cathodic protection to automobiles is attractive because of the possibility of maintaining corrosion resistance while using lower-cost materials. A commercially available product for automobiles that uses both sacrificial anode CP and impressed current CP was tested in a periodic salt spray environment to investigate the performance of the devices. Experimental results show that the metal to be protected has different anti-corrosion effects depending on the distance from the anode of the device, but it is effective for the entire 120 cm long specimen exposed with one anode. The cathodic protection is effective because the conductive tape attached to the anode of the structure to be protected acts as a constant electrolyte in wet and dry conditions. The results show that the entire standard passenger car can be protected by cathodic protection with 4 anodes.

  • In view of innovated utilization of Korean clay resources conventional techniques for pulverization are reviewed in comparison with fluid energy milling processes of fluidized-bed type. Throughout experiment indigenous halloysite ores (white grade) after usual pretreatment are employed as typical sample. It is evidenced that grinding by means of porcelain ball mills has limitation in reducing clay particles to less than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter regardless of whether it is processed in dry or wet. Upon use of tungsten carbide bull mill particulation to submicron sizes could be effected with relative ease but severe coloration in grey is attended indicating metallic contamination possibly from friction of the grinding apparatus itself. In contrast the modified fluid en ergy milling enables particulation to $\leq$10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter with simultaneous classification int olimited ranges of particle size distributions. Since this technique is in principle based on the interparticle collisions rather than on the frictions between particles and mill surfaces minimum impurity attendance would be an additional advantage. Evidence leads to the conclusion that the fluidized-bed type milling is regarded as highly effective in puverization as well as fractionation of the clay minerals under examination. This is especially so in contemplating high-value and/or high-purity clay products.

  • Extracted from the metropolitan area, the Paldang Lake, which supplies approximately 8 million tons of water, has achieved a BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) of 1.1 mg/L as a result of water quality preservation policies. However, concerning the COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) component that encompasses refractory organic matter, there has been an observable upward trend in concentration. The introduction of refractory organic matter into the water source of Paldang Lake brings potential increments in BOD, generates off-putting tastes and odors in tap water, increases THM (Trihalomethane) formation, and triggers algae proliferation. Moreover, if residual hazardous refractory pollutants persist in aquatic environments, they may induce endocrine disruption and phenomena such as antibiotic resistance. In this study, a monitoring campaign was executed to discern the concentration of refractory organic matter emissions from point and non-point sources within Paldang Lake and its upstream region, with the aim of managing refractory organic matter in Paldang Lake. By comparing refractory organic matter emission concentrations across monitored areas, the elimination efficiency at wastewater treatment plants was assessed. Additionally, employing the Pearson correlation correlation analysis technique, correlations among refractory organic matter indices, antecedent wet days, and antecedent dry days were explored. The concentrations of refractory organic matter in rivers and Paldang Lake exhibited a similar pattern. Wastewater treatment plant effluents exhibited higher concentrations compared to rivers and Paldang Lake. The assessment of refractory organic matter removal at wastewater treatment plants indicated a removal efficiency of 65.73%. However, no significant correlation emerged between refractory organic matter emission concentration and antecedent wet days or priory antecedent dry days. This absence of correlation is attributed to data scarcity, underscoring the need for long-term monitoring and data accumulation.
