Numerical Modelling Of The Coastal Upwelling Near The Poleward Edge Of The Western Boundary Current

  • A numerical experiment is made in order to clarify the mechanism of the upwelling phenomenon along the coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. The possibility of the upwelling is suggested from the analysis of the observational data in the east of Honshu, Japan, and in the south eastern coast of Korean Peninsula. This upwelling phenomenon is very deep and can be traced to the bottom layer. The upwelling phenomenon seems to be a general oceanic feature which characterizes the region along the west coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. This experiment is simulating the oceanic condition of the transition region between Kuroshio front and the Oyashio front in the east of Honshu, Japan. The possible explanations of the causes of the upwelling are as follows;In the interior of the modeled ocean the cold heavy water supplied from the north and the warm light water from the south make the north-south gradient of the pressure field and accelerate the eastward current to produce the h-orizontal divergence feld near the west coast. The divergence is compensated by the upwelling near the separation region. Another one is that the upwell-ed cold water strengthen constantly the pressure gradient which is balanced by the northward current and is weakened by the horizontal diffusion.

A Study on Typhoon-Disasers in the Korean Peninsula (한반도의 태풍피해에 관한 연구)

  • In order to study the disaster of typhoons which hit the Korean peninsula a period of 22 years from 1959 through 1980 was covered to collect necessary data with respect to attack of typhoons and their damage. Centering around the Korean peninsula, typhoons which attacked between 1959 and 1980 were grouped according to their treking routes and damage for detailed analyses. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The average annual damage of typhoons in the Korean peninsula was found to be 1.27 from June to September. The monthly distributions were found to be 53.6% in August, 28.6% in September and 14.2% in July. 2. About an half (56.4%) of the typhoons which hit the Korean peninsula passed through the western coast and 27.3% through the southern and 14.6% through the eastern. Typhoons of the we8tern coast were divided by their treking routes as 25.5% in CWE type (Jul., Aug., Sep.), 14.6% in WE type (Jul., Aug.), 16.3% in W type (Jul.). 3. The minimum SLP averaged 976.6mb and ordere:l by the treking routes as E$_1$$_1$ and CWE types are higher 20mb than S, E or WE types. 4. The Korean peninsula was damaged by all number of the typhoons in WE or S type, by a third at number of its in E or WE and WI type. 5. The annual probabilities of typhoon-disasters were 0.773 for once or more, 0. 409 for twice or more, and 0.091 for three times or more. Hearvy damage experienced in the Korean peninsula are found to have an annual. 6. Amount of the damage by the treking routes in ordered S>WE>CWE>E>W$_1$, and heavy storms experienced in the Xorean peninsula are found to have accompanied the WE and S types during the months of August and September. 7. The average annual damages were found to be 110 at the death-tall, 45, 000 at the sufferers and 10.5 billion at the property damage. 8. Seventy-sex percent of the all damage in the Korean peninsula distributed on the district from the 36th Parallel south and included Chie Ju island.

  • The Kanweoldo Deposit in the Cheonsoo Bay western coast of Korean Peninsula is considered to be influenced by severe freezing condition under cold humid environment of the last glacial age. The evidence of severe freezing in the some upper part of the fine-grained Kanweoldo Deposit is characteristically irregular wavy la-mellar structure with the interval of 2∼8mm. In particular lamina show very compacted fabrics composed of rounded or spheroidal discrete aggregates covered by silt caps. Such laminar structure and associated micro-fabrics might owe to soil freezing such as ice segregation in lens form cryophoresis pressure from growing ice and disturbance by frost-creep. Furthermore pedogenesis of cold-humid type such as gleyzation or peseudo-gleyzation also might af-fect the kanweoldo Deposit in the priod of severe cold-humid cli-mate of the Wrm. The Kanweoldo sediment and organic remnant(16,708 B.P. with error limit of 250 years) affected by severe cryogenic activities sug-gest that the paleoclimate of Late Wrm in Korea might be so cold and humid as to engender the cryogenic structure in subaerial silty and sandy silt deposits.

  • Storm surges caused by typhoon Billie, 28 Aug. ∼ 2 Sep. 1970, on the west and south coasts of Korea are studied with the tidal data. Tracks and frequencies of the typhoons which affected the Korean peninsula and the yearly maximum tidal deviation at tide stations for the past twelve years are also reviewed. It is assumed that most of the typhoons affecting the Korea peninsula cause variations of sea level along almost all of the coast of Korea. Maximum storm surges at each tide station on the south coast appeared to be caused by typhoons during the summer, and by the north westerly monsoon and extraordinary cyclones on the west coast during spring and winter. In the coastal waters of the west coast where depths are shallower and the bottom configuration is flat, sea level variation is mostly caused by atmospheric pressure and wind effect. When a typhoon travels as in case of typhoon Billie, sea level ascends generally on the south coast and it descends on the west coast before the typhoon approaches near to the coasts. Considering the large tidal range on the western and southern coasts, it is assumed that the extraordinary destructive surges can be occurred when the tide is high water. Reviewing the monthly mean sea level variations on the each coast, hazards to be caused by storm surges can more fluently occur during the summer.

Clay Minerals and Their Distribution in the Soft Ground Deposited along the Coastline (한국 해안에 퇴적된 연약지반의 점토광물의 종류와 분포)

  • In order to identify clay minerals in the soft ground, which has been deposited along the coastline of the Korean peninsula, 14 samples have been taken at different locations and then X-ray diffraction analysis is carried out for them. It is known from the analysis that the various kinds of clay minerals mixed with different portions exist in the soft ground, but halloysite is not traced in any samples. It is featured regionally that kaolinite and illite are found in the western coast and the southern coast. Montmorillonites exists only in the western coast. This feature of regional occurrences can be explained with the help of geology of the region. Activities determined from physical properties of the soils do not coincide with those of clay minerals identified from X-ray diffraction analysis.

Synoptic Climatological Characteristics of Dry and Wet Years in Korea in the Spring (한국의 춘계 소우년과 다우년의 종관기후학적 특성)

  • This study is a comparative analysis on the variabilities of spring precipitation and atmospheric circulations of 500hPa surfaces between dry years and wet years over the Korean Peninsula. The distribution of variabilities of precipitation in spring are different from month to month. In March, the pattern is west-high and east-low, in April, north-high and south-low, in May, east-high and west-low respectively. In the distribution of 500hPa geopotential height anomaly, dry years of March show west-high and east-low pattern in that negative anomaly zones are formed around the Korean Peninsula and western coast of the northern Pacific Ocean, and positive anomaly zones are formed in the inland of East Asia centered on Siberia. Consequently, the Korean Peninsula and neighboring regions experience dry season when the zonal flows are strong with the positive anomaly zones of zonal components. On the contrary in the wet years the westerlies are weak since the pattern is east-high and west-low in which the positive anomaly zones are formed over the Korean Peninsula centered on the Aleutian Islands and western coast of the northern Pacific Ocean and the negative anomaly zones are formed in the inland of East Asia centered on Tibet Plateau and Siberia. The dry years of April and May show north-high and south-low patterns in that negative anomaly zones are found from the center of the northern Pacific Ocean to the eastern coast of East Asia, and the positive anomaly zones are found in the center of East Asia extending from Aleutian Islands to Tibet Plateau. On the contrary, in the wet years the patterns show south-high and north-low. This study identified not only that there are contrary atmospheric circulation patterms between dry years and wet years over Korean Peninsua in spring, but also there are different atmosphric circulation patterns between early and late spring.

  • In the ocean area surrounding the Korean Peninsula, the undersea earthquakes have occurred frequently during last decades. The eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula is very vulnerable to tsunami attacks which occur along the Western Coast of Japan. In special, the middle areas of the eastern coast of Korean Peninsula have been damaged due to the Central East Sea Tsunami occurred in 1983. Thus, tsunami hazard mitigation becomes an important issue at eastern coastal communities. The countermeasures against unexpected tsunami attacks are not sufficient because the government policy generally focused on not preventing but recovering. In this paper, a hazard map based on the field survey and tsunami evacuation simulation is developed to mitigate tsunami damage at Imwon port, which was severely damaged during the 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami.

  • The geographical distribution and soil characteristics of Korean Elaeagnus plants were investigated by literatures, field survey and soil analysis. Deciduous E. umbellata was distributed throughout the Korean peninsula including western and southern islands. Distribution area of evergreen Elaeagnus plants was classified into three groups; E. macrophylla and E. glabra belonged to group l occurring in the southern, western and eastern islands; E. submacrophylla to group 2 occurring in the southern and western islands; E. maritima and E. ankaii to group 3 in the southern islands only. Deciduous E. umbellata appeared euryeciously from poor soil to rich one, whereas evergreen Elaegnus plants appeared stenoeciously in haline soil near coast.

Species Composition and Vertical Distribution of Marine Algal Communities at the Taean Peninsula of the West Coast of Korea (서해안 태안반도 해조군집의 종조성과 수직분포)

  • Seasonal variability in algal community structure was examined at the intertidal zones of five study sites on the Taean Peninsula, on the western coast of Korea, from February 2014 to November 2015. A total of 118 species of marine algae, comprising 17 green, 24 brown and 77 red algae, were identified. The maximum number of species was observed at the Mohang site (75 species), and the minimum at the Yeonpo site (46 species). The seaweed biomass was $160.24g\;dry\;wt./m^2$ on average, and was maximal at Uihang ($519.04g\;dry\;wt./m^2$) and minimal at Yeonpo ($19.03g\;dry\;wt./m^2$). Based on biomass, the dominant seaweeds at Taean peninsula were Sargassum thunbergii and Corallina pilulifera. Community indices were as follows: richness index (R), 3.21-5.01; evenness index (J'), 0.33-0.38; and diversity index (H'), 0.90-1.12. Based on evaluation of the environmental states by the community indices, the ecological evaluation index (EEI) of Taean peninsula was "moderate". The overall species and biomass of seaweeds decreased after the oil spill. However, Hakampo previously showed a similar algal community structure. In conclusion, the algal community was temporarily affected by the oil spill, but rapidly recovered.

Distribution of the Spotted Seal, Phoca largha, along the Coast of Baekryongdo (백령도 점박이물범 (Phoca largha)의 서식현황에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the distribution of spotted seals, Phoca largha, inhabiting the coast of Baekryongdo. Monitoring of spotted seals in Baekryongdo was conducted between June 2006 and November 2008, using a 5-ton fishing vessel 1hour before low tide. The monthly maximum number of observed seals was 274 in September 2006, 139 in September 2007, and 213 in August 2008. Average observed monthly counts were largest in August and September. Relatively more spotted seals were observed when there were few cloudy days and plenty of sunshine. Bycatch, stranding, and observations of spotted seals have been reported along the coast of the Korean peninsula since 2000, and spotted seals were observed four times in the western coastal region, three times in the southeastern region, and 12 times on the east coast. This suggests that spotted seals inhabiting Baekryongdo migrate to the East Sea via the West and South seas as individuals or in groups.
