  • This paper is especially concerned with the weldment between support beam and square bar that plays important roles in control box of Expansion Joint as a bridge structure. Fatigue strength of the weldment is dependent on notch radius from welding defects and material properties. From which, tensile strength($\sigma$ult) and fatigue notch factor(Kf) become important factors to predict fatigue life. The fatigue notch sensitivity(η) for metals can be divided into two types : high and low notch sensitivity. In this work, the Expansion Joint weldment was found to have low notch sensitivity. Fatigue test of real structure was performed up to 106cycles to be compared with predicted endurance limit.

  • Fatigue life a box weldment was predicted with the stress concentration and residual stress using the equation reported. In order to change the stress concentration and residual stress of the box weldment, Post treatments such as smooth grinding of weld bead, weld toe grinding and hammer peening were applied. The fatigue life of the weldment after post treatment clearly increased, which is attributed to the reduction of stress concentration and/or introduction of compressive residual stress at the weld toe. The predicted fatigue life was a relatively good agreement with the experiment for a long fatigue life, while it was underestimated for a short fatigue life.

  • To perform the integrity evaluation of RPV more realistically, it is necessary to evaluate the metallurgical microstructure and residual stress considering more real phenomena such as multi-pass welding process and PWHT. Accordingly, firstly, this paper proposes the integrated assessment methodology systematically developed for residual stress on weldment of RPV by using thermodynamics, diffusion theory, finite element method and validation experiment. Also, the residual stress on circumferential weldment of reactor pressure vessel is calculated considering multi-pass welding process by the commercial finite element package, ABAQUS.

  • Welding structure contains residual stress due to thermal-plastic strain during welding process, and its magnitude and distribution depend on welding conditions. Cracks initiate from various defects of the weldment, propagate and lead to final fracture, The crack initiation and propagation processes are affected by the magnitude and distribution. Therefore, the magnitude and distribution of weldment residual stress should be considered for safety design and service of welding structures. Also it is very important that more accurate assessment method of fatigue crack growth must take into account the redistributing the residual stress quantitively. because the residual stress in weldment has characteristics of its redistribution with loading magnitude, number of cycles and fatigue crack propagation. In this study fatigue crack behavior of STS-304 weldment was investigated during crack propagation into tensile residual stress region or compressive residual stress region. Crack growth rates were predicted and compared with experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of the welding distortion of the 9% Ni steel weldment involving the martensitic phase transformation. In order to do it, an uncoupled thermal-mechanical finite element (FE) model was developed to evaluate the effect of the phase transformation on the distortion for the weldment. High speed quenching dilatometer tests were employed to define the variations of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with the fraction of the martensitic phase transformation, which strongly depends on the cooling speed after welding. Comprehensive experiments for the welding distortion of the weldment with reference to welding heat input were employed to verify the FE model.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of the distortion at the ES and SA weldment of Cr-Mo low alloy steel. In order to do it, the effect of heat input, plate thickness and strip wire width for ESW on the distortion at the ES and SA weldment was evaluated using FEA. Based on the results, the principal factors controlling the distortion of the ES and SA weldment were identified and the predictive equation was established.

The maximum strain distribution during static loading is similar to the FEM analysis. • Many microelectronic devices are miniaturizing the capacitance density and the size of the capacitor. Along with this miniaturization of electronic circuits, tantalum (Ta) capacitors have been on the market due to its large demands worldwide and advantages such as high volumetric efficiency, low temperature coefficient of capacitance, high stability and reliability. During a tantalum capacitor manufacturing process, arc welding has been used to weld base frame and sub frame. This arc welding may have limitations since the downsizing of the weldment depends on the size of welding electrode and the contact time may prevent from improving productivity. Therefore, to solve these problems, this study applies laser spot welding to weld nickel (Ni) and Au-Sn-Ni alloy using CW IR fiber laser with lap joint geometry. All laser parameters are fixed and the only control variable is laser irradiance time. Four different shapes, such as no melting upper workpiece, asymmetric spherical-shaped weldment, symmetric weldment, and, excessive weldment, are observed. This shape may be due to different temperature distribution and flow pattern during the laser spot cutting.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the principal factor controlling transverse residual stress at the weldment for joining unit hull blocks. In order to do it, the comprehensive FE analyses were carried out to evaluate the effect of distance between fillet and butt weldments, stiffener span and in-plane restraint degree on the amount and distribution of transverse residual stress in way of the weldments between unit hull blocks. In accordance with FEA results, principal factor controlling the amount of transverse residual stress at the weldments was identified as in-plane restraint degree of butt weldment for unit blocks. The effect of other variables on the transverse residual stress was very small relatively.
