  • In this paper, the fatigue strength and the fatigue crack propagation behaviors of the round bar specimens which were spirally built up by welding and subsequently hardened by quenching were investigated. The material used was SF60 which was whdely employed in mechanical components, especially shafts. Fatigue tests were conducted at the fully reversed condition(R=-1) and axial and load control in the room temperature ahd air environment. The experimental results were expressed by both the range of stress intensity factor ($\Delta{K}$) and the effective range of stress intensity factor ($\Delta{K}_{eff}$). It was clarified that applying of quenching after the building up welding process improved the fatigue strength and the gatigue crack propagation property in the low range of $\Delta{K}$ of the built up round bar specimen.

  • The experimental investigation focuses on an influence of artificial aging time in longitudinal butt welded Al 6013-T4 aluminum alloy on the fatigue crack growth resistance. The preferred welding processes for this alloy are frequently tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) process due to its comparatively easier applicability and better weldability than other gas metal arc welding. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on compact tension specimens (CT) in longitudinal butt TIG welded after T82 heat treatment was varied in three artificial aging times of 6 hours, 18 hours and 24 hours. Of the three artificial aging times, 24 hours of artificial aging time are offering better resistance against the growing fatigue cracks. The superior fatigue crack growth resistance preferred spatial variation of materials within each specimen in the Paris equation based on reliability theory and fatigue crack growth rate by crack length are found to be the reasons for superior fatigue resistance of 24 hours of artificial aging time was compared to other joints. The highest of crack propagation resistance occurs in artificial aging times of 24 hours due to the increase in grain size (fine grained microstructures).

  • The previously developed two dimensional model was modified in order to predict more accurately the degree of microsegregation and eutectic fraction on in weld metal whose solidification rate is very fast. The model employed the same assumptions with previous model but considered of a tip undercooling. The previously predicted microsegregation and eutectic fraction has the discrepancies between simulated and examined results in the weld metal solidification. The experiments for the weld metal solidification of 2024 A1 and Fe-Ni alloy were carried out in order to examine the reasonability and feasibility of this modified model. The concentration profile of the solute and eutectic fraction predicted by the simulation agreed well with those found from experimental works. According to the results, it was believed that the dendrite tip undercooling considered in the modified model be reasonable for predicting the degree of microsegregation more accurately in weld metla solidification. In the GTA welds, degree of dendrite-tip undercooling increases with increasing solidification rage(welding speed). This serves to increase the concentration of dendrite core and thus result in reducing the degree of segregation. And solid state diffusion(back diffusion) during solidification is very low in the weld metal solidification so that little additional homogenization of solute occurs during solidification. With consideration of tip undercooling this modified model can predict exactly degree of microsegregation and eutectic fraction from slow solidification(casting) to fast solidification(welding).

  • A study on the corrosion behavior in case of As-welded and PWHT temperature 55$0^{\circ}C$ of welding part of RE36 steel for marine structure was investigated with parameters such as micro-Vickers hardness, corrosion potential measurement of weld metal(WM), base metal(BM) and heat affected zone(HAZ), both Al anode generating current and Al anode weight loss quantity under sacrificial anode cathodic protection conditions. And also we carried out slow strain rate test(SSRT) in order to research both limiting cathodic polarization potential for hydrogen embrittlement and optimum cathodic protection potential as well as mechanical properties by post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) effect. Hardness of HAZ was the highest among three parts(WM, BM and HAZ) and the highest galvanic corrosion susceptibility was HAZ. And the optimum cathodic polarization potential showing the best mechanical properties by SSRT method was from -770mV to -875mV(SCE). In analysis of SEM fractography, applied cathodic potential from -770mV to -875mV(SCE) it appeared dimple pattern with ductile fracture while it showed transgranular pattern (Q. C : quasicleavage) under -900mV(SCE). However it is suggested that limiting cathodic polarization potential indicating hydrogen embrittlement was under -900mV(SCE).

  • Post weld heat treatment(PWHT) is usually carried out to remove the residual stress and to improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints. By the way, welding structure transformed owing to PWHT and reheating for repair loads the random cycles fatigue as offshore welding structure of constant low cycle fatigue as pressure vessel, and then, pre-existing flaws or cracks exist in a structural component and those cracks grow under cyclic loading. Therefore, the effects of PWHT and stress ratio on fatigue crack growth behaviors were studied on the three regions such as HAZ, sub-critical HAZ and deposit metal of welded joints in SM53 steel. Fatigue crack growth behavior of as-weld depended on microstructure and fatigue crack growth rate of HAZ was the lowest at eac region, but after PWHT it was somewhat higher than that of as-wel. In case of applying the stress($10kg/mm^2$) during PWHT, fatigue crack growth resistance tended to increase in the overall range of .DELTA.K.

  • Waveforms of $CO_2$ gas shielded arc welding in short circuit transfer mode was studied with the waveform analysis program, which can calculate various waveform factors such as number of short circuit event, mean and standard deviation of short circuit time and arc time. The calculated values of these factors were correlated independently or in combination with the spatter generation rate to figure out the most reliable index for evaluating spatter generation and further for arc stability. As a result this study, it was confirmed that the spatter generation tends to decrease with the increase of short circuit frequency. Further to this, it was also found that as the short circuit frequency increases the short circuit event becomes more uniform resulting in the decrease of standard deviations ($\sigma$values) of short circuit time and arc time. This result demonstrated that these factors are strongly correlated with each other and thus any one of these factors can be used for the evaluation index. In the discussion, however, short circuit frequency was proposed for the most practical index in evaluating the arc stability of short circuit transfer mode since it is the one which could be monitored in-process condition without any complex caculation process.

  • In this paper, the effects of conventional and newly developed elastomer modified underfill materials on the mechanical shock reliability of BGA board assembly were studied for application in mobile electronics. The mechanical shock reliability was evaluated through a three point dynamic bending test proposed by Motorola. The thermal properties of the underfills were measured by a DSC machine. Through the DSC results, the curing condition of the underfills was selected. Two types of underfills showed similar curing behavior. During the dynamic bending reliability test, the strain of the PCB was step increased from 0.2% to 1.5% until the failure circuit was detected at a 50 kHz sampling rate. The dynamic bending reliability of BGA board assembly using elastomer modified underfill was found to be superior to that of conventional underfill. From mechanical and microstructure analyses, the disturbance of crack propagation by the presence of submicron elastomer particles was considered to be mainly responsible for that result rather than the shear strength or elastic modulus of underfill joint.

  • Alloy 625 is used widely in industrial applications such as aeronautical aerospace, chemical, petrochemical and marine applications. Because of a good combination of yield strength. tensile strength, creep strength, excellent fabricability, weldability and good resistance to high temperature corrosion on prolonged exposure to aggressive environments. High qualify weldments for this material are readily produced by commonly used processes. But all of processes are not applicable to this material by reason of unavailability of matching, position or suitable welding filler metals and fluxes may limit the choice of welding processes. Recently, the flux cored wire is developed and applied for the better productivity in several welding position including the vortical position. In this study. the weldability and weldment characteristics of Alloy 625 are evaluated in FCAW weld associated with the several shielding gases($80\%Ar+20\%\;CO_2,\;50\%Ar+50\%\;CO_2.\;100\%\;CO_2$) in viewpoint of welding productivity. The results of the experimental study on corrosive characteristics of Alloy 625 are as follows; There is no remarkable difference among shielding gases. however they has a striking difference among corrosive solutions by results of distinguished density and time of corrosive solution. Generally, the shielding gases($80\%Ar+20\%\;CO_2$) was superior to the other gases on high temperature tensile and a low temperature impact. but all of the shield gases were making satisfactory results on corrosion test.

  • This paper describes an investigation on the effect of using three different filler metals on fatigue behavior of mechanical structures welded. The welding is carried out on the steel A510AP used for the manufacture of gas cisterns and pipes. The welding process used is manual welding with coated electrodes and automatic arc welding. Compact tension CT50 specimen has been used. The three zones of welded joint; filler metal FM, heat affected zone HAZ and base metal BM have been investigated. The results show that the crack growth rate CGR is decreasing respectively in BM, FM and HAZ; however, this variation decreases when stress intensity factor SIF increases. For low values of SIF, the CGR is inferior in the over-matched filler metal of which the value of mismatch M is near unity, but for high values of M the CGR is superior, and the effect of the over-matching on CGR becomes negative. No deviation of the crack growth path has been noticed.

  • Metal fume fever has been known as an occupational disease is induced by intense inhalation of fresh metal fume with a particle size smaller than $0.5{\mu}m\;to\;1{\mu}m$. The fumes originate from heating metals beyond their boiling point, as happens, for example, in welding operations. Oxidation usually accompanies this process. In most cases, this syndrome is due to exposure to zinc oxide fumes; however, other metals like copper, magnesium, cadmium, manganese, and antimony are also reported to produce such reactions. Authors report a case of metal fume fever suspected to be associated with copper fume inhalation. The patient was a 42-year-old male and was a smoker. He conducted inert gas tungsten arc welding on copper-coated materials without safety precautions such as a protective mask and adequate ventilation. Immediately after work, he felt metallic taste in his mouth. A few hours after welding, he developed headache, chilling sensation, and chest discomfort. He also complained of myalgia, arthralgia, feverish sensation, thirst, and general weakness. Symptoms worsened after repeated copper welding on the next day and subsided gradually following two weeks. Laboratory examination showed a transient increase of neutrophil count, eosinophilia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and positive C-reactive proteinemia. Blood and urine copper level was also increased compared to his wife. Before this episode, he experienced above complaints several times after welding with copper materials but welding of other metals did not produce any symptoms. It was suggested that copper fume would have induced metal fume fever in this case. Further investigations are needed to clarify their pathogenic mechanisms.
