  • Effect of corrosion characteristics in relation to loaded stress in the welded zone of A5083-H116 aluminum alloy, in the seawater was studied. The corrosion experiment was performed for 120 hours on the specimens in the natural seawater tank with four steps of the loaded stress. The corrosion crack, corrosion rate, electrode potential, current, and corrosion pattern, etc. were examined for the specimens with the elapse of the immersion time. The main result derived from this study is the crack growth length is increased with the increasing loaded stress. The electrode potential and the corrosion current are decreased rapidly in the early stage of the corrosion, and then decreased gradually and stabilized eventually with the elapse of the immersion time. The test condition of the longer crack growth tends to show the higher corrosion rate. Corrosion pattern of the welded zone indicates that the depth and width of the pitting become increasing with the increasing loaded stress.

  • In case of this thick rolling-steel for a multistory building, a large oil-drilling structure, a large vessel, a bridge and so on, Lamella Tearing around the welded joint zone is the most serious problems. In order to prevent Lamella Tearing, not only is choice of material important, but also the comprehensive investigation for the structural design and the construction. The Lamella Tearing that is a staircase-shape occurs due to the contraction stress to the thickness direction of the plate and has the character that the cracks progress along the elongated inclusion by rolling. In general, because cracks occur at the heat affected zone and around HAZ, it is necessary to establish the safety and the confidence of the welded structure to restrain the welding defect such as Lamella Tearing. The mechanical approaches are the easier and more economical than the approaches of the material and the construction method. In addition, the appropriate welding profile and the optimum welding condition contribute toward the improvement of the productivity and influence on the standardization of the manufacturing technology.

  • In this study, we investigated fatigue crack growth behavior of laser welded sheet metal due to a single overload. Fatigue specimens were made using butt joint of cold rolled sheet metal that was welded by $CO_2$ laser. The fatigue crack propagation tests were performed in such a way that fatigue loading was parallel to the weld line while crack propagation was perpendicular to the weld line. Single overload was applied when fatigue crack tip was arrived near the weld line. The distances between the crack tip and the weld line at which a single overload was applied were 6, 4 and 2mm. The effect of specimen thickness and overload ratio on the fatigue behavior was determined. The plastic zone size of crack tip due to the single overload was determined from the finite element analysis. For investigating fatigue crack growth behavior, we used different thickness specimen 0.9mm and 2.0mm, and variable overload ratio applied fatigue crack propagation test. Also we used finite element analysis for investigating the plastic zone size of crack tip when single overload applied

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the microstructures and mechanical properties of a friction stir welded Ni based alloy. Inconel 600 (single phase type) alloy was selected as an experimental material. For this material, friction stir welding (FSW) was performed at a constant tool rotation speed of 400 rpm and a welding speed of 150~200 mm/min by a FSW machine, and argon shielding gas was utilized to prevent surface oxidation of the weld material. At all conditions, sound friction stir welds without any weld defects were obtained. The electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) method was used to analyze the grain boundary character distributions (GBCDs) of the welds. As a result, dynamic recrystallization was observed at all conditions. In addition, grain refinement was achieved in the stir zone, gradually accelerating from 19 ${\mu}m$ in average grain size of the base material to 5.5 ${\mu}m$ (150 mm/min) and 4.1 ${\mu}m$ (200 mm/min) in the stir zone with increasing welding speed. Grain refinement also led to enhancement of the mechanical properties: the 200 mm/min friction stir welded zone showed 25% higher microhardness and 15% higher tensile strength relative to the base material.

  • In this paper, thermite and gas pressure weldings have been used to join rails in-track and analyzed as functions of hardness and wear characteristics. The wear rate of thermite welded rail is low compared with that of gas pressure welded rail, which is tested in a pin-on-disk wear tester. The hardness of thermite welded materials is relatively high and narrowly distributed between three zones; welded part, thermally affected zone, and base matrix. Wear of a welded rail may be a major factor in railroad maintenance costs and failures at the rail-rail huh joint.

  • The heat transfer and thermal stress-distribution were numerically determined by using the finite element method for a butt-welded pipe. A mechanical stress relieving(MSR) treatment which has been frequently used in the fabrication of pressure vessels instead of the post weld heat treatment (PWHT) was also simulated to investigate its effect of reducing the residual stress in the welded zone by a mechanical loading.

  • In this paper, the forming limits of laser welded blank sheets are introduced, obtained from a tensile test and a hemispherical dome punch test. Especially, the forming limit diagram(FLD) on the heat affected zone with a width 2.54mm is emphasized. Also, the experimental experiences in finding specific strain conditions are discussed.

  • For this study, SM45C steel rods using generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by Butt-GMAW method. and then it was studied about estimation of fatigue strength and the region of infinite life. From this result, it is demanded that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected in the region of the lowest infinite life of heat affected zone.

  • In recent automotive industry, vehicle weight can be reduced by one-step forming of tailored blanks welded with two or more sheets of metal blanks. Mash seam welding shows an overlap joint, a much wider welding area, and heat affected zone(HAZ) than a laser welding. This paper deals with the forming characteristics of mash seam welded tailored blanks. Mash seam welded blanks of same or different thickness combinations were prepared, and tensile, hardness, erichsen, and dome stretching tests were done.
