The evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1C}$ was performed on the center of weld metal(CWM), the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM) of API 5LB steel pipes welded by the high frequency electric resistance welding. The $J_{1C}$ was evaluated by the JSME R-Curve and JSME SZW methods using the smooth and side-grooved specimens. The results are as follows; (1) The $J_{1C}$ values by the SZW method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method, because the micro-crack is formed as SZW increase with the deformation at SZ after initiation of the ductile crack. (2) The everage of $J_{1C}$ values by the the R-curve and the SZW methods in side-grooved specimens tended to decrease in comparison with smooth specimens 9.42% at CWM, 4.2% at HAZ, 23.2% at BM, respectively. (3) The boundary of the fatigue pre-crack, stretched zone, and dimple regions appeared more clearly in side-grooved specimens, for the slight change of SZW in the direction of the plate thickness, as compared with smooth specimens.

Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between ASTM Type 316L and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with FCAW were evaluated in terms of microstructure, ferrite content, EDS analysis, hardness, tensile strength, impact toughness and corrosion resistance. Three heat inputs of 10.4, 16.9, 23.4kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with E309LMoT1-1 wire. Microstructure of dissimilar weld metals consisted of mostly vermicular type of ${\delta}$-ferrite and some lathy type of ${\delta}$-ferrite, and ${\delta}$-ferrite was transformed into globular type in reheated zone. In all conditions, weld metals were solidified on FA solidification mode. Based on the EDS analysis of weld metals, All Creq/Nieq values were in the range of FA solidification mode, and it was decreased with increasing heat inputs whereas it was increased with increasing layers. The amount of ${\delta}$-ferrite was decreased with increasing heat input due to the difference of cooling rate, and it was increased with increasing layers. Accordingly, hardness and tensile strength of dissimilar metals weld joints was decreased with increasing heat input while impact energy was increased with increasing heat input. Corrosion test of dissimilar metals weld joints showed that weight gain rate of heat input 10.4kJ/cm was the greatest, and that of three heat inputs became constant after certain time.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stresses on the $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ and fatigue crack growth behavior of butt weldments. For this purpose, transverse butt sutmerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and CT(compact tension) specimens which loading direction is perpendicular to weld bead were selected. Welding residual stresses distribution on the specimen was determined by hole drilling method. The case of crack located parallel to weld bead, the states of as weld and PWHT, $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ of specimens(HAZ, weld zone) was higher than that of the base metal probably because of the compressive residual stresses of crack tip. In low $\Delta$K region, it is estimated that the effects of residual stresses for da/dN are great. In region II, the da/dN of weldments in as weld state was lower than that of the base metal. Though da/dN of Weldments in PWHT state was similar to that of the base metal. The constant of power law, m in two states consisted with the base metal. Therefore , it is estimated that the value of m is not affected by residual stresses. Fatigue crack growth behavior of weldments consisted with the base metal considering the effective stress intensity factor range($\Delta$K$\sub$eff/) included the effect of initial residual stress(Kres). Thus, we can predict the fatigue crack growth behavior of weldment by knowing the distribution of initial residual stress at the crack tip.

The application of SS400 carbon steel and AISI430 ferritic stainless steel joint has been increased in industries because of the advantage of both metals was able to increase the service lifetime of the important structures. Therefore, a fusion welding process that could produce a sound weld and good joint properties should be optimized. This research is aimed to weld a butt joint of SS400 carbon steel and AISI430 ferritic stainless steel using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) welding process and to study the effects of welding parameters on joint properties. The experimental results were concluded as follows. The optimized welding parameter that produced the tensile strength of 448 MPa was the welding current of 110A, the welding speed of 400 mm/min and the mixed gas of $80%Ar+20%CO_2$. Increase of the welding current affected to increase and decrease the tensile strength of the joint, respectively. Lower welding current produced the incomplete bonding of the metals and indicated the low tensile strength. Microstructure investigation of the welded joint showed a columnar grain in the weld metal and a coarse grain in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The unknown hard precipitated phases were also found at the grain boundaries of the weld metal and HAZ. The hardness profile did not show the difference of the hardness on the joint that was welded by various welding currents but the hardness of the weld metal was higher than that of the other location.
IMicrostructure evolution and tensile property in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) of austenitic Fe-30Mn-9Al-0.9C lightweight steels were investigated. Five alloys with different V and Nb content were prepared by vacuum induction melting and hot rolling process. The HAZ samples were simulated by a Gleeble simulator with welding condition of 300kJ/cm heat input and HAZ peak temperatures of $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$. Microstructures of base steels and HAZ samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile tests. The addition of V and Nb formed fine V and/or Nb-rich carbides, and these carbides increased tensile and yield strength of base steels by grain refinement and precipitation hardening. During thermal cycle for HAZ simulation, the grain growth occurred and the ordered carbide (${\kappa}-carbide$) formed in the HAZs. The yield strength of HAZ samples (HAZ 1) simulated in $1150^{\circ}C$ peak temperature was higher as compared to the base steel due to the formation of ${\kappa}-carbide$, while the yield strength of the HAZ samples (HAZ 2) simulated in $1250^{\circ}C$ decreased as compared to HAZ 1 due to the excessive grain growth.
This work was attempted to join SCP sheet and STS304 sheet by using Nd:YAC laser beam. SCP sheet has good formability and low cost, while STS304 has excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in high temp. In this experiment, butt joint type was used to develop the tailored blank welding for dissimilar steel. Sheets which have different thermal properties. Computer simulation was conducted to obtain the off-set position for efficient welding by considering laser power, scanning speed, focal length and basic properties. The result showed that the optimum thermal distribution was obtained when the laser beam was irradiated at $0.05{\sim}0.1$ mm off-set toward the SCP sheet side. The experiment was conducted based on the result of computer simulation to show the same optimum conditions. Optimum conditions were 3KW in laser beam power, 6m/min in scanning speed, -0.5mm in focal position, 0.1mm off-set toward SCP. Microhardness test, tensile test, bulge test, optical microscopy, EDS, and XRD were performed to observe the microstructure around fusion zone and to evaluate the mechanical properties of optimum conditions, The weld zone had high microhardness values by the formation of the martensitic structure. Tensile test measured the strength of welded region by vertical to strain direction and the elongation of welded region by parallel to strain direction. Bulge test showed $52\%$ formability of the original materials. Bead shape, grain size, and martensitic structure were observed by the optical microscopy in the weld zone. Detailed results of EDS, XRD confirmed that the welded region was connected of martensitic structure.
A kinetic model fur the particle coarsening behavior was developed. The proposed model considered the critical particle size which can be derived from Gibbs-Thomson equation unlike the conventional approach. In this study, the proposed particle coarsening model was applied to study the coarsening behavior of titanium nitride (TiN particle) in microalloyed steel weld HAZ. Particle size distributions and mean particle size by the proposed model were in agreement with the experimental results. Meanwhile, using additivity rule, the isothermal model was extended to predict particle coarsening behavior during continuous thermal cycle.
When a workpiece is to be arc welded around the outside corner, continuous welding without welding seam in the neighborhood of comer still remains a very difficult technique. Skilled welders weld comers by delicate“hand-eye coordination”while turning the workpiece manually, However, there is not a very clear solution to this problem in robotized arc welding process. In order to solve this problem, the coordination of a robot and a positioner with one or two axes is necessary. This paper presents a method of continuous welding around the corner of workpiece using the coordinated motion of a robot and a positioner. The positioner is either revolute jointed or prismatic jointed. In this paper, a clothoid curve is chosen for welding trajectory. The clothoid curve is excellent in connecting straight and curved weld-lines with good continuity and accommodates various welding conditions. By using this welding trajectory, the deceleration, which leads to widening of the melt and the heat affected zone, at comer area is reduced with strategic rotation of robot torch in coordination with a positioner providing smooth transition of welding torch orientation. Two types of special clothoid curves are developed for different weld slope conditions. These clothoid curves are applied to the case of linear and rotary Positioners at arc welding robot work-cell.
In this study, fundamental experiment was conducted with various strength of UHSS (Ultra High Strength Steel) by $CO_2$ laser. And then, butt and lap joint laser welding with boron alloyed steel and Al-Si coated boron alloy steel have been done by changing laser beam feature, existence of gap and existence of coating layer to know welding characteristics of those materials. As a result, in case of fundamental experiment with various strength steel, hardening was found in the weld metal of all tested materials and softening was found at the heat affected zone of SGAFC 1180. In case of laser butt welding of UHSS, mechanical properties was improved by using small laser beam diameter and Al-Si coating layer caused fracture of weld metal. In case of laser lap welding of UHSS, Al-Si coating layer resulted in formation of intermetallic compound at the fusion boundary where fracture occurred. Al-Si coating layer caused lowering mechanical properties of weld metal.

During ultrasonic welding, plastic deformation, elastic hysteresis, and friction generate heat at the contact portions of the two materials to be welded, theoretically analyzing and experimentally measuring the temperature at the welded part are very important for identifying the heat affected zone. However, the welding temperature during ultrasonic welding wherein welding is performed in less than a second is a challenge. We investigated the effects of welding conditions such as welding time, welding pressure, and the ultrasonic vibration amplitude of horns on the temperature of welded surface of a Ni sheet of thickness 0.1 mm. We used a horn with a resonance frequency of 40 kHz and an ultrasonic welder. The temperature was measured using a intrared sensor, and its characteristics were investigated. Experimental results showed that increase in welding time and pressure and ultrasonic vibration amplitude of horns generally caused the increase in surface temperature of the weld.
