  • This paper presents methods for design and strength analysis of lifting lugs utilized in assembling, erection, and turning over of ship structures. Lifting lugs are designed in accordance with ASME BTH-1-2008; Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices. Experimental tests for fillet welded joints were conducted to design weld size of lifting lugs and under-structures. The nonlinear finite element method, using MSC.Marc software, is employed for limit state assessment of lifting lugs in static loading conditions. The analysis considers nonlinearities in material properties and contact between lifting lug and pin.

  • In this paper an experimental study on the development of the shielded metal are welding(SMAW) optimization technique for the dissimilar materials SS41 and STS304 of Auto-Lifting Magnet core plate was carried out. It was confirmed that the optimum welding heat input range was 37.5 to 45 kj/cm by considering on the strength and fatigue life of the welded joints more than 100% joint efficiency. And the quantitative relationship empirical wquation between the strength toughness adn fatigue life and the weld heat input was obtained.

  • High performance, high strength steels were developed and used in steel structures recently. Since the newly developed high strength steels posses different toughness, weldability, yield strength ratio, etc. in compare with conventional structural steels, it is requred to investigate the applicability of the design strength of fillet weld specified in the existing design codes. The comparison of the design strengths of various codes from domestic and overseas shows quite a difference. Test results for fillet weld strengths were collected and statistically analysed. Each of yield strength, tensile strength of parent material and tensile strength of weld metal was selected as a main parameter for each estimation equation respectively. All the estimation equations yield almost same values for each type of steel regardless the type of main parameter selected. Considering the behaviour of fillet welded joints and for practical purposes, it is proposed that the equation with tensile strength of parent material is to be used in design codes. The comparison with the proposed nominal strengths of fillet welds shows that the existing design codes could lead to an uneconomical result for low strength steels and lie on an unsafe side for high strength steels.

  • In this study, the 4-point bending test has been performed in order to estimate the effect of TIG-dressing on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strength of as-welded specimens has been satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of domestics and AASHTO & JSSC, and fatigue strength at $2{\times}106cycles$ of TIG-dressing specimens has been increased compared with as-welded specimens. As the result of beachmark tests, fatigue cracks have been occurred at several points, where the radius of curvature and flank angle in the weld bead toes are low, and grown as semi-elliptical cracks, then approached to fracture. As a result of finite element analysis, stress concentration factor in weld bead toes has been closely related to the flank angel and radius of curvature, and between these, the radius of curvature has more largely affected in stress concentration factor than flank angle. As a result of fracture mechanics approaches, the crack correction factor of test specimens has been largely affected on stress gradient correction factor in case a/t is below 0.4. From the relations between stress intensity factor range estimated from FEM analysis and fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue life has been correctly calculated.

  • Friction welding is a common practice to join axially symmetrical parts for automobile industry applications. The shaft for automobile reverse idle gear is generally produced by forging steel, SF 45. This method is not so good because of high cost of material and production. In this study, in order to investigate the possibility of application of SM 45C to SF 45 dissimilar friction welding, the dissimilar friction welded joints were performed using 20 mm diameter solid bar in forging steel(SF 45) to carbon steel(SM 45C). The optimal friction welding parameters were selected to ensure reliable quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile test, micro-Virkers hardness surveys of the bond of area and optical microstructure investigations for welded joint parts. Finally, post weld heat treatment(PWHT) of the high-frequency induction hardening was performed for the friction welded specimens under the optimal welding conditions. And then, the mechanical properties were compared for as-welded and PWHT in SM 45C to SF 45.

  • This study detected SCC defects of dissimilar metal welded(STS304 and SA106 Gr. b) pipes using the ultrasonic infrared thermography method and the lock-in image treatment method among infrared thermography method. The infrared excitement equipment has 250 Watt of output and 20 kHz of frequency. By using the ultrasound infrared thermography method, the internal defects of dissimilar metal weld joints of pipes used at nuclear power plants could get detected. By an actual PT test, it was observed that the cracks inside the pipe existed not as a single crack but rather as a multiple cracks within a certain area and generated a hot spot image of a broad area on the thermography image. In addition, UT technology could not easily defects detected by the width of $10\;{\mu}m$ fine hair cracks. but, ultrasound infrared thermography technique was defect detected.

  • A beam splice method using inclined end-plates and high-strength tension bolts was developed. The end-plates welded to a bracket and a spliced beam are connected each other by using the tension bolts. In the present study, six exterior beam-to-column moment connections were tested under cyclic loading. Test parameters were the end-plate details and bolt arrangements. All specimens were designed so that moment resistances of the end-plates and bolts were greater than the required moment at the beam splice, in accordance with the design methods of AISC Design Guide 4. Test results showed that in the beam splices with the extended end-plates, the beam moment successfully transferred to the bracket, without any defeats such as excessive prying action of the end plates and brittle failure at the end plate-to-beam flange weld joints. However, the deformation capacities of the overall beam-to-column connections were limited due to the brittle failure of the beam-to-column flange weld joints. From the test results, recommendations for seismic design and detailing of the beam-to-column moment connection with inclined end-plate beam splice were given.

  • In this study, A series of fatigue tests have been performed on the fillet welded joints of cover plates in steel plate girders in order to quantitatively assess the fatigue characteristics according to the shapes of cover plates. From the results of fatigue tests, it has been shown that the fatigue strengths were slightly different according to their shapes, but satisfied the fatigue design curves in Korea and other countries. Also, from the results of beachmark tests, it has been confirmed that the points of fatigue crack initiation were closely related to the shapes of weld bead toes, and fatigue cracks simultaneously initiated from several points in weld bead toes have been grown as semi-elliptical surface cracks, and these cracks have been coalesced each other, and grown as through thickness cracks, and finally reached to fracture. Besides, from the results of fracture mechanics approaches, stress gradient factors were the most dominant factors among crack correction factors obtained from the existing equations and finite element analysis, and the fatigue life on fillet welded joints of cover plates could be estimated using the relations between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range obtained from finite element analysis.

  • Friction welding has emerged as a reliable process for high-production commercial application with significant economic and technical advantages. But nondestructive test in friction weld was not clearly developed. Therefore the experimental verification is necessary in order to understand the characteristics of the pulse echo effects according to various change in welding conditions. This paper presents a new attempt to detect the bond strength of friction welds by ultrasonic. Instead of looking for a flaw or cracks at the interface, the new approach evaluates the coefficient by reflection which provides a single quantitative indicator involving the acoustic energy reflected at the interface. The objective of this study is to find the relationship between the reflection coefficients and the weld strength. Results of the bar-to-bar friction welding of aluminum to copper and stainless steel and such relationship investigation are presented and interpreted.
