The Effect of an Energy Restriction Program on the Weight Loss and the Change of Biochemical nutritional Status in Obese Women

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of an energy restriction program on the weight loss and changes of the biochemical nutritional status for 35 obese women. The energy restriction program took place over a 3-week period that was devided into two parts. The first part consisted of 750-800kcal diet and the second part of 800-1000kcal. Subjects were provided a low energy formula and a menu for the recommended diet. Anthropometric and biochemical measurement before and after the energy restriction program were estimated. Mean weight loss was 3.0kg, accordingly the obestiy rate was lowered from 40.2 to 34.4, BMI from 29.2 to 28.9 and fat weight from 23.3kg to 21.0kg( <0.01. <0.05). Waist circumference loss was most prominent(4.4%) compared to triceps(21% loss)and hip circumference(2.2%loss). Mean RBC count, hemoglobin and hematocrit were significantly lowered( <0.01) but they were in the normal range. Systolic blood pressure was significantly decreased from 124.1mmHg to 113.1mmHg . Mean SGOT and SGPT were lowered from 29.3u/L to 20.0u/L and from 28.7u/L to 16.6u/L, respectively. It seems that the 3 weeks of energy restriction program used in this study was effective in improving anthropometric measurements without producing deficiency of iron or other susceptible nutrients.(Korean J community Nutrition 2(5) : 695-700,1997)

한방요법을 포함한 통합비만관리 프로그램이 체성분과 비만도 변화에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Integrative Weight Control Program Including East Asian Traditional Medicine on the Degree of Obesity and Body Composition)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an integrative weight control program including East Asian traditional medicine on the degree of obesity and body compositions. Method: Using one group pre-post test design, 63 subjects aged 19 years or older were conveniently recruited from D University hospital. The weight control program consisted of acupuncture, aerobic exercise, moderate caloric restriction, and behavioral modification for weight loss. Paired t-tests were conducted using the SPSS V18.0. Results: Body weight (t=10.44, p<.001), body fat mass (t=11.47, p<.001), percentage of body fat (t=11.49, p<.001), the degree of obesity (t=10.48, p<.001), body mass index (t=10.66, p<.001), waist circumference (t=10.25, p<.001), hip circumference (t=6.10, p<.001), and WHR (t=2.21, p=.040) decreased after administering the integrative weight control program. Conclusion: This integrative weight control program effectively reduced the obesity degree and percentage of body fat. Further study is needed to replicate our program in a larger sample with control group to validate the findings.

가미 태음조위탕과 저열량 식이를 병행한 체중 감량 프로그램에서 발생한 이상 반응 분석 (Analysis of Adverse Events in Weight Loss Program in Combination with 'Gamitaeeumjowee-Tang' and Low-Calorie Diet)

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the safety of 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' by analyzing adverse events in weight loss program in combination with 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' and low-calorie diet. Methods: A retrospective review of adverse events in weight loss program in combination with 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' and low-calorie diet from the electronic medical chart (n=124) between June 2015 and December 2016 was conducted. Three Korean Medicine Doctors (KMDs) reviewed adverse events for two times, during week 2 to 4 and at week 10, after starting weight loss program. Adverse events were evaluated in terms of causality, severity and system-organ classes. Also, agreement among the three KMDs was made through further discussion in case of disagreement after independent review. Results: The overall rate of adverse events was 37.1% during week 2 to 4 and 16.9% at week 10. For causality of adverse events using the World Health Organization-Uppsala Monitoring Centre causality categories, 52.2% were evaluated 'possible' at week 2-4 and 57.1% were evaluated 'unlikely' at week 10. All symptoms were evaluated as 'mild' by LDS scale. Nausea (15, 12.1%) was the most frequent adverse event at week 2-4 and dizziness (6, 4.8%) was the most common at week 10. Conclusions: Adverse events decreased over time. There were no serious adverse events and none of the subjects were dropped due to adverse events. Continuous study is needed to prove the safety of 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' for treating obesity.

폐경 후 비만 여성의 체중감량을 위한 가미태음조위탕의 임상적 활용: 후향적 차트 리뷰 (Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for Weight Loss in Post-Menopausal Obese Women: A Retrospective Chart Review)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate weight change and analyze adverse events in post-menopausal obese women with Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for weight loss. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for medical records of 115 post-menopausal obese women (body mass index, BMI≥25 kg/m2) who were administered with Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for 12 weeks for the purpose of weight loss. Weight, skeletal muscle ratio and BMI changes were compared before and after the program. Adverse events were evaluated by causality, severity and system-organ classes. Results: A total of 115 patients were included in this study. The average total weight loss in post-menopausal women was 5.72±2.04kg(p<0.001) and the average weight loss rate was 8.06±2.70%(p<0.001). After the 12-week program, the body fat rate was significantly decreased(3.76±2.20%)(p<0.001) and the skeletal muscle ratio was significantly increased(2.07±1.24%)(p<0.001). There were no significant differences in weight loss, skeletal muscle ratio change and body fat rate change depending on the number of hospital visits. Insomnia was frequently reported throughout the period, and no serious adverse events were reported. Conclusions: This study showed the potential that weight management treatment with Gamitaeeumjowee-tang could be a good way to lose weight of post-menopausal obese women without serious adverse events. Continuous well designed clinical studies are needed.

학령기 비만아동을 위한 체중조절 프로그램의 실시 및 효과평가 (A Study on Effects of Weight Control Program in Obese Children)

  • The enforcement and its effect of weight control program including nutrition education, exercise and behavioral modification therapy during 20 weeks were studied in primary school obese children. The sample consisted of treatment group(n=19) and control group (n=23). To evaluate the effects of weight control program, treatment group took pretest and posttest for nutrition knowledge, attitude and food habits. Nutrient intakes, serum lipid levels and anthropometric values were also measured. After weight control program, body weight of treatment group significantly decreased from 47.0$\pm$9.0kg to 45.9$\pm$8.5kg(p<0.001), but than of control group increased from 47.8$\pm$8.1kg to 49.0$\pm$8.7kg (p$\leq$0.05). Obesity index showed decline of 8.6% for treatment group and gain of 0.7% for control group. After self-control period, body weight and relate index in both groups were increased. For the nutrition knowledge test results, the posttest mean scores of treatment group showed the significant increase(p<0.001). For the attitude toward nutrition and food habit results, the posttest mean scores increased significantly (p<0.05, p<0.01). There was a decline of 28% in serum triglycerides, whereas serum total cholesterol increased 11% of baseline. These findings suggest that well-combined weight control program for obese children may result in a substantial loss of body weight during 14 weeks. In addition, these reuslts indicate that weight redution through weight control program can be a viable approach to help normalize serum lipids in obese children. Finally, these data suggest that it may be important to identify that affect weight loss and maintenance, and to examine how to manipulate these factors in weight control program.

비만 및 과체중 여성 환자에서 한약 처방의 치료 효과에 대한 후향적 분석 (The Retrospective Analysis of Obesity and Overweight Female Patients with Clinical Treatment including Herbal Medicine)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of herbal medicine on obesity and overweight female patients and to gather the information of a proper treatment goal for anti-obesity program in Korean medicine clinic.Methods: 230 subjects were recruited and those data were analyzed for body-mass index (BMI), treatment duration, weight, body fat, muscle volume and body fat/weight loss ratio. It was compared among age groups and severity of obesity.Results: It was achieved to loss 12-13 kg for 105.8 days thru obesity program of Korean medicine clinic. There were no significant differences for BMI loss, weight loss, body fat loss, muscle volume gain and treatment duration among age groups. It was found that there were significant differences among overweight, obesity and severe obesity group for BMI loss, weight loss, body fat loss and muscle volume gain except treatment duration. It was assumed the weight loss for 1 month was 3.2 kg, 4.2 kg, 4.5 kg for each severity group respectively.Conclusions: It was found herbal medicine treatment would be effective for female obesity and expected the patients could achieve 12-13 kg weight loss for 15 weeks treatment including 8-12 weeks herbal medicine administration and BMI loss per month could be 1.22 kg/m2, 1.60 kg/m2 and 1.70 kg/m2 for severity of obesity respectively. Hereafter, further controlled study with more numbers of patients should be needed to determine the goal of medical treatment for obesity.

과체중 및 비만여성의 생식섭취가 체중감소 및 생화학적 영양상태에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Uncooked Powdered Food on the weight toss and the Biochemical Nutritional Status in Overweight and Obese Women)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of an uncooked powdered food(UPF) on the weight loss and changes of the biochemical nutritional status for 20 overweight and 26 obese women in Iksan area. We just replaced common breakfast and dinner of the subjects with UPF. Their dietary intake status was evaluated by 24-hour recall method. Also anthropometric and biochemical measurements before and after the UPF program were estimated. The intake of energy, lipid and protein decreased and the quality of meals improved as people started to take UPF. Due to the energy loss by taking UPF, weight and body fat decreased significantly. The percentage of the body fat was high among the weight lost, from which we judged that the process of losing weight was successful. It is hard to predict whether weight loss will occur to people who are already in shape or not, but if overweight and obesity people regularly take UPF instead of other food products, we assume that UPF will help lessening the body fat. The most positive change among biochemical changes by taking UPF was the decrease of serum lipid contents. When overweight and obesity women replaced two out of three meals with UPF for 3 month period, no significant nutritional problems occurred. It seems that the 12weeks of UPF program used in this study was effective in improving anthropometric indices without producing the deficiency of iron or other susceptible nutrients.

옥타코사놀 투여가 태권도 선수의 단기간 체중 감량 시 혈중 피로물질, 면역글로불린에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Octacosanol Supplement and Taekwondo Program on Blood Fatigue Substance, Immunoglobulin for Short Term Weight Loss in High School Male Taekwondo Players.)

  • 본 연구는 고등학교 남자태권도 선수 21명을 대상으로 옥타코사놀 섭취에 따른 단기간 체중감량 시 혈중 피로물질면역글로불린에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위해 6일간 동일한 합숙훈련을 하였으며 옥타코사놀 섭취감량군에 비섭취 감량군은 점차적으로 칼로리를 줄이는 식사제한을 통해 자기체중의 5% 이상 감량하였다. 옥타코사놀은 오전 ${\cdot}$ 오후로 나누어 식후 30분에 20 mg씩 섭취시켰으며 비섭취 감량군과 통제군은 같은 방법으로 위약을 섭취시켜 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 젖산과 암모니아는 옥타코사놀 섭취감량군이 유의하게 감소하였으며 집단 간 비교에서는 비섭취 감량군과 통제군보다 유의하게 감소하였다. 2. 젖산탈수소효소는 비섭취 감량군과 통제군이 감량 후 유의하게 증가하였다. 3. 면역글로불린 IgA, IgG는 모두 집단에서 증가한 것으로 나타났다.

한의학 이론에 기반을 둔 양성치료(養性治療)가 비만여성의 생물학적, 심리적 지표 변화에 미치는 영향 (The effect of Yangsung program (oriental psychological treatment based on Confucian ideas program) for obesity on self esteem, self control and weight of women)

  • Objective : This study examined whether Yangsung program (oriental psychological weight regulation model based on Confucian ideas) is effective on weight loss, self esteem, three factor on eating questionnaires(restraint eating, disinhibition and hunger), distortion of body-image and biochemistry of blood. Method : 23 women were assigned randomly into 2 groups; experimental group(n=10) and control group(n=13). Experimental group had 7 personal sessions consisting of personal Yangsung therapy, meditation, general diet and exercise education. Control group had personal sessions with general diet and exercise education once a week for 6 weeks. All subjects were weighed and evaluated with Rosenberg self esteem scale, distortion of body-image, biochemistry of blood and three factor eating questionnaires at the beginning and end of the program. Result : There is significant difference between two groups in changes of self esteem, disinhibition and hunger(p<0.05). There is no significant difference in weight reduction and BMI between two groups. Conclusion : This study showed a new possibility of unique psychological program for obesity characterized by its philosophical context.

과체중 대학생에서 저열량식이 또는 저열량식이와 운동병합에 의한 체중 감량 효과 (The effects of weight loss by a low-calorie diet and a low-calorie plus exercise in overweight undergraduate students)

  • Korean undergraduate students attempt to lose weight but often fail due to utilizing ineffective weight loss strategies. Some diet programs have succeeded, yet, they have not provided adequate skills for long-term weight maintenance. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of a low calorie diet and exercise with nutritional education on weight loss, serum lipid profiles, nutrient intakes, and dietary behavior modification in overweight and obese undergraduate students. The subjects in the low calorie diet group (LCD; n = 12) and the low calorie diet plus exercise group (LCDE; n = 13) had the same goal of losing 4 kg during a 12 week program. Nutrient intakes were assessed by the 24 hour recall method. Also, food habits and dietary behaviors were investigated by self-administered questionnaires before and after the weight control program and one month after completing the program. LCD and LCDE groups lowered body weight by 2 kg and 1 kg, respectively, although they decreased calorie intake by 355 and 287 kcal per day compared to intakes prior to the study. Body fat mass decreased in both the LCD and LCDE groups; however, the decrease was greater in the LCDE group. In addition, only the LCDE group increased muscle mass. The LCD group had a slightly better effect in reducing body weight, body fat, and waist circumference than the LCDE group. However, their decrease was reversed after the mid-study check in the LCD group; the reduction was better maintained and decreased more in the LCDE group. However, serum lipid profiles were already in borderline prior to the study; moreover, they were not modified after losing weight. The dietary behavior program helped students to develop better dietary habits. In conclusion, the combination of a low calorie diet and exercise is necessary in order to maintain longer weight loss by increasing muscle mass and decreasing body fat.
