  • Accurate weight prediction methods are an essential of the ship design in both ship cost managements and performance satisfactions. When no parent or similar ships are available, an adequate method of the ship weight estimating is required. In this study, there was carried out to develop the ship weight estimating method for the preliminary design phase. The weight estimating methods were first surveyed by the references and summarized their characteristics. The weight estimation method by statistical approach was developed for the container ship because the containerized transportation markets is gradually growing and ship's size and loading capacity are rapidly enlarged. The correlation analysis and the multiple regression analysis were used for developing the weight estimating method. As a results of evaluating the developed method, the error ratio of the variation between estimated weight and ship's data was about 5%. And it was only 1% difference with the calculating weight of conceptual design results by shipyard design team that the estimating weight of ultra-large container ship was predicted by the developed method.

  • In the construction industry, Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is considered to be the most suitable approach and determining the attribute weights is an important CBR problem. In this paper, a method is proposed for determining attribute weights that are calculated with attribute relation. The basic items of consideration were qualitative and quantitative influence factors. These quantitative factors were related to the qualitative factors to develop a Cost Drivers-structural equation model which can be used to estimate construction cost by considering attribute weight. The process of determining the attribute weight-structural equation model consists o 4 phases: selecting the predominant Cost Drivers for the SEM, applying the Cost Driers in the SEM, determining and verifying the attribute weights and deriving the Cost Estimation Equation. This study develops a cost estimating technique that complements the CBR method with a Cost Drivers-structural equation model which can be actively used during the schematic estimating phases of construction.

  • In the initial design stage, the technology for estimating and managing the weight of a floating offshore structure, such as a FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage, and Off-loading unit) and an offshore wind turbine, has a close relationship with the basic performance and the price of the structure. In this study, using the genetic programming (GP), being used a lot in the approximate estimating model and etc., the weight estimation model of the floating offshore structure was studied. For this purpose, various data for estimating the weight of the floating offshore structure were collected through the literature survey, and then the genetic programming method for developing the weight estimation model was studied and implemented. Finally, to examine the applicability of the developed model, it was applied to examples of the weight estimation of a FPSO topsides and an offshore wind turbine. As a result, it was shown that the developed model can be applied the weight estimation process of the floating offshore structure at the early design stage.

  • The weight of floating offshore plant, such as an FPSO(Floating, Production, Storage, and Off-loading unit) and an offshore wind turbine, is important for estimating the amount of production material and for determining the production method. Furthermore, the weight is a factor which affects in the building cost and production time of the floating offshore plant. Although the importance of the weight has long been recognized, the weight has been roughly estimated by using the existing design and production data, and designer's experience. To solve this problem, a simplified model for the weight estimation of the floating offshore plant using the statistical method was proposed in this study. To do this, various data for estimating the weight of the floating offshore plant were collected through the literature survey, and then the correlation analysis and the multiple regression analysis were performed to generate the simplified model for the weight estimation. Finally, to examine the applicability of the developed model, it was applied to examples of the weight estimation of an FPSO topsides and an offshore wind turbine. As a result, it was shown that the developed model can be applied the weight estimation process of the floating offshore plant at the early design stage.

  • We investigated the relationship between morphological characteristics and individual dry weight to develop a method for estimating the individual dry weight of sheet form macroalgae: Ulva australis, Ulva linza, Pachymeniopsis lanceolata, and Pyropia yezoensis. In Total, 319 thalli of various sizes were collected at six sites from February 2017 to December 2018. An interspecific allometric exponent of 0.28 was found for length-biomass allometry in four sheet form macroalgae, corresponding to a 1/4-power law for primary producers. The relationships between surface area and individual dry weight, as well as between individual fresh weight and individual dry weight, were found to fit significantly using linear regression equations. This explained 94-99 % of individual dry weight, indicating that surface area and individual fresh weight can be used to accurately estimate individual dry weight. We propose the use of this method when experimental processes do not allow individual dry weight to be measured directly, so researchers can save both time and expense.

  • An experiment was conducted to compare the traditional weigh-suckle-weigh method and the $D_2O$ dilution technique to estimate milk consumption of suckling piglets. Milk consumption of 50 individual piglets was estimated on four consecutive days by the $D_2O$ dilution method and for approximately 8 hours on both the second and fourth day by the traditional WSW method. The average milk intake of piglets estimated by the $D_2O$ dilution method was 45.0 g/hr and there were no significant differences between the four measurement period. The traditional weigh-suckle-weigh method provided a significantly lower estimate of milk consumption (36.8 g/hr). However correction for weight losses associated with milk suckling and weighing would increase the weigh-suckle-weigh estimate to a level similar to that determined by the $D_2O$ dilution method.

  • The experimental studies were intended to clarify the effects leaf yield calculations, and also aimed at estimating the heritabilities on some characters for the selection of desirable stocks of mulberry trees. The method of estimating heritabilities for the eight characters-branch length, node number, branch diameter, branch number per stock, total branch weight, old branch weight, new shoot and leaf weight, and leaf weight, was the variance components procedures in a replicated trial for the varietal lines. The results are summarized as follows: Means, variances and standard errors for the characters are shown in table 1, and the results of variance analyses are also shown in table 2. Heritability values of node number was the highest, and these of branch number per stock was the lowest, and these of other six characters were intermediate values. These all calculated heritability values were higher than anticipated. This was expected since these values, which were the broad sense heritability, contain the variance due to dominance and epistasis in addition to the additive variance.

  • Value-based requirements engineering process, called The ViRE(Value-Innovative Requirement Engineering) was suggested to create an uncontested market using ERRC(Eliminate, Reduce, Raise, Create) requirements analysis. But ViRE did not provides a quantitative data analysis method for ERRC decision so as to make objective decisions for customers. In this paper, to solve this problem, we suggest a quantitative ERRC analysis method by estimating requirements cost. Our method defines user requirements and decides their weight. Then, it makes quality level table for all the identified requirements and function modules and estimate implementation cost based on their quality levels. Finally, assess each requirement's impact and then evaluate ERRC value. We could get the more objective ERRC values by evaluate the requirement weight. functional module weight, and implementation cost. And we proved the efficiency of our model by a case study, smart student ID system.

  • Aircraft weight is an important factor affecting performance and fuel efficiency. In the conceptual design stage of the aircraft, the process of balancing cost and weight is performed using empirical formulas such as fuel consumption cost per weight in estimating element weight. In addition, when an airline operates an aircraft, it promotes fuel efficiency improvement, fuel saving and carbon reduction through weight management activities. The relationship between changes in aircraft weight and changes in fuel consumption is called the cost of weight, and the cost of weight is used to evaluate the effect of adding or reducing weight to an aircraft on fuel consumption. In this study, the problems of the existing cost of weight calculation method are identified, and a new cost of weight calculation method is introduced to solve the problem. Using Breguet's Range Formula and actual flight data of the A350-900 aircraft, two weight costs are calculated based on take-off weight and landing weight. In conclusion, it was suggested that it is reasonable to use the cost of weight based on the take-off weight and the landing weight for other purposes. In particular, the cost of weight based on the landing weight can be used as an empirical formula for estimating element weight and optimizing cost and weight in the conceptual design stage of similar aircraft.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the carbon sequestration in forest stands using KOMPSAT-2 imagery. For estimating the amount of carbon sequestration, the stand biomass of forest was estimated with the total weight, which was the sum of individual tree weight. Individual tree volumes could be estimated by the crown width extracted from KOMPSAT-2 imagery. In particular, the carbon conversion index and the ratio of the $CO_2$ molecular weight to the C atomic weight, reported in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guideline, was used to convert the stand biomass into the amount of carbon sequestration. Thereafter, the KOMPSAT-2 imagery was classified with the segment based classification (SBC) method in order to quantify carbon sequestration by tree species. This approach, estimating the amount of carbon sequestration for certain species in stand, can be available to extend plot-based carbon sequestration to stand-based carbon sequestration.
