  • Display devices are becoming increasingly important as an interface between humans and machines in the growing information society. In display devices, PDP (Plasma Display Panel) has many advantages in that it has wide screen, wide viewing angle and is light weight, thin. In PDP driving method, if the brightness of input image is high, applying the fixed sustain pulse to the PDP panel will raise the PDP power consumption and may damages the PDP panel. To overcome these problems, the Plasma AI driving method was introduced by the Matshushita co. in Japan. The Plasma AI driving module calculates the peak value and average value of 1 frame image and adjusts the gradation and sustain pulses for 1 frame sustain. In this paper, the proposed PDP driving module is based on the Plasma AI driving module. The proposed driving module calculates peak value and average value, and the brightness distribution of 1 frame image. Using brightness distribution, the proposed driving module divides 1 frame input image into 15 image patterns. For each image pattern, minimum sustain pulses and sub-frames are used for the brightness of 1 frame image and the sustain weight for 64, 128, 192 gradation is proposed. Therefore, the sustain power consumption can be reduced.

  • This paper aims at formulating various statistical models for the study of a ten year Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) data collected from various WIM stations in Hong Kong. In order to study the bridge live load model it is important to determine the mathematical distributions of different load affecting parameters such as gross vehicle weights, axle weights, axle spacings, average daily number of trucks etc. Each of the above parameters is analyzed by various stochastic processes in order to obtain the mathematical distributions and the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method is adopted to calculate the statistical parameters, expected values and standard deviations from the given samples of data. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) method of approach is used to check the suitability of the statistical model selected for the particular parameter and the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the distributions of maximum value stochastic processes of a series of given stochastic processes. Using the statistical analysis approach the maximum value of gross vehicle weight and axle weight in bridge design life has been determined and the distribution functions of these parameters are obtained under both free-flowing traffic and dense traffic status. The maximum value of bending moments and shears for wide range of simple spans are obtained by extrapolation. It has been observed that the obtained maximum values of the gross vehicle weight and axle weight from this study are very close to their legal limitations of Hong Kong which are 42 tonnes for gross weight and 10 tonnes for axle weight.

  • As carbon fiber is a light-weight materials, high tensile strength and durability compared with rebar, the retrofitting method for RC structures using carbon fiber sheet (CFS) must be use widely. In this paper, the tensile strength test for carbon fiber sheet variable of CF's weight and elastic modulus to evaluate the design tensile strength of carbon fiber sheet which is needed for the strengthening design of CFS and the calculation of strengthening effect. As a result, the design tensile strength of CFS can be calculate using the effect coefficient of strengthening(α) of CFS, the average tensile strength of CFS and the standard deviation of CFS(equation 5)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effectiveness of nutritional education and exercise intervention on reduction and maintenance of weight. The subjects were 24 obese women whose body mass index(BMI) was over $25kg/m^2$. Nutritional education was performed once a week and swimming was done three times a week throughout this 12 week program. The subjects were recalled 1 month after the program was complete. Nutrient intakes were assessed by 24 hour recall method. Also food habits, dietary behaviors and nutritional knowledge were investigated by self-administered questionnaires before and after the weight control program and one month after completing the program. Height, weight, body composition and blood levels were measured before and after the weight control program and one month after completing the program. During the 12 weeks of the weight control program, body weight significantly decreased from an average of 69.7kg to 65.8kg and to 65.1kg after one month(p<0.05). Body fat and BMI also significantly decreased(p<0.01). Cholesterol and blood sugar levels decreased after 12 weeks and increased one month after completing the program. After taking nutritional education, the nutritional knowledge scores increased. Calcium intake significantly increased after completing the education and one month after completing the program(p<0.01). Iron intake significantly decreased from an average of 12.1g to 11.3g after completing the program and increased to 15.5g one month after completing the progrom(p<0.001). We concluded that our nutritional education and exercise program was effective for reducing and maintaining weight.

  • This paper was concerned with the risk evaluation of oxidizing substances by burning test method. The samples were prepared the heaped cone-shaped mixtures of solid oxidizing sub-stance with sawdust, and ignition of the sample was made on contact with heating wire inside the combution chamber that the temperature and humidity of atmosphere can be kept at $25^{\circ}C$ and 60% respectively. Accordingly, it were measured the combustivity effect of mixing ratio and amount of sample weight on the burning rate. As a result of burning test of these samples, it could be noticed that the case when the sawdust has so and 30 wt.% in the mixing ratio shows effective combustivity, and as the amount of sample weight was increasing, It showed more rapid burning time. So the average burning time could be obtained by considering the weighting factors to the parameters of the mixing ratio and the amount of sample weight. Finally, it was compared with the effects of cation and anion of oxidizing substances and also applied analytically to the classification and evaluation of oxidizing sub-stances as dangerous goods.

  • The objectives of this study were: (a) to find the maximum ac- ceptable weight which can be carried for 8 hours using a psycho- physical method for front, side (one hand and two hands) and back carrying, and (b) to develop models which could predict the ac- ceptable maximum weight in carrying using isometric strength and anthropometric data. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to find the maximum acceptable weight in front side and back carrying. Six college students participated in the experiment. It was found that subjects were willing to carry the heaviest load using two-hand side carrying (average maximum acceptable weight: 7.76 kg). Back carrying was the close second with 6.62 kg. Also, there was a significant difference (p< 0.01) in maximum acceptable weight for carrying between one-hand (4.40kg) and two-hand side carrying.

  • A traditional average smoothing method is designed for smoothing out noise, which, however, unintentionally results in smooth corner points on the curvature accompanied with a shrinkage of curves. In this paper, we propose a novel curve smoothing method via polygonal approximation of the input curve. The proposed method determines the smoothing weight for each point of the input curve based on the angle and approximation error between the approximated polygon and the input curve. The weight constrains a displacement of the point after smoothing not to significantly exceed the average noise error of the region. In the experiment, we observed that the resulting smoothed curve is close to the original curve since the point moves toward the average position of the noise after smoothing. As an application to digital cartography, for the same amount of smoothing, the proposed method yields a less area reduction even on small curve segments than the existing smoothing methods.

  • This paper suggests the novel light-weight signal processing algorithm for wireless sensor network applications which needs low computing complexity and power consumption. Exponential average method (EA) is utilized by real time, to process the magnetometer signal which is analyzed to understand the own physical characteristic in time domain. EA provides the robustness about noise, magnetic drift by temperature and interference, furthermore, causes low memory consumption and computing complexity for embedded processor. Hence, optimal parameter of proposal algorithm is extracted by statistical analysis. Using general and precision magnetometer, detection probability over 90% is obtained which restricted by 5% false alarm rate in simulation and using own developed magnetometer H/W, detection probability over 60~70% is obtained under 1~5% false alarm rate in simulation and experiment.
