Development of a Distributed Web Caching Network through Consistent Hashing and Dynamic Load Balancing

  • This paper focuses on a hash-based, distributed Wet caching network that eliminates inter-cache communication. An agent program on cache servers, a mapping program on the DNS server, and other components comprised in a distributed Web caching network were modified and developed to implement a so-called "consistent" hashing. Also, a dynamic load balancing algorithm is proposed to address the load-balancing problem that is a key performance issue on distributed architectures. This algorithm effectively balances the load among cache servers by distributing the calculated amount of mapping items that have higher popularity than others. Therefore, this developed network can resolve the imbalanced load that is caused by a variable page popularity, a non-uniform distribution of a hash-based mapping, and a variation of cache servers.

Design and analytical evaluation of a fuzzy proxy caching for wireless internet

  • In this paper, we propose a fuzzy proxy cache scheme for caching web documents in mobile base stations. In this scheme, a mobile cache model is used to facilitate data caching and data replication. Using the proposed cache scheme, the individual proxy in the base station makes cache decisions based solely on its local knowledge of the global cache state so that the entire wireless proxy cache system can be effectively managed without centralized control. To improve the performance of proxy caching, the proposed cache scheme predicts the direction of movement of mobile hosts, and uses various cache methods for neighboring proxy servers according to the fuzzy-logic-based control rules based on the membership degree of the mobile host. The performance of our cache scheme is evaluated analytically in terms of average response delay and average energy cost, and is compared with that of other mobile cache schemes.

  • Streaming media has contributed to a significant amount of today's Internet Traffic. Like traditional web objects, rich media objects can benefit from proxy caching, but caching streaming media is more of challenging than caching simple web objects, because the streaming media have features such as huge size and high bandwidth. And to support various bandwidth requirements for the heterogeneous ubiquitous devices, a transcoding proxy is usually necessary to provide not only adapting multimedia streams to the client by transcoding, but also caching them for later use. The traditional proxy considers only a single version of the objects, whether they are to be cached or not. However the transcoding proxy has to evaluate the aggregate effect from caching multiple versions of the same object to determine an optimal set of cache objects. And recent researches about multimedia caching frequently store initial parts of videos on the proxy to reduce playback latency and archive better performance. Also lots of researches manage the contents with segments for efficient storage management. In this paper, we define the 9-events of transcoding proxy using 4-atomic events. According to these events, the transcoding proxy can define the next actions. Then, we also propose the segment-based caching policy for the transcoding proxy system. The performance results show that the proposing policy have a low delayed start time, high byte-hit ratio and less transcoding data.

  • Cache mechanism, which has been a research subject for a significant period of time in computer science, has become realized in the form of web caching in network practice. Web caching has various advantages, such as saving of network resources and response time reduction, depends its performance on cache replacement policy, therefore, analysis and consideration of the environment in which a web cache operates is essential for designing better replacement policies. Thus, in the current web environment where is rapidly changing relative to the past, a new cache replacement policy is necessary to reflect those changes. In this paper we stipulate some characteristics of the web at present, propose a new cache replacement policy, and evaluate it.

  • Temporal locality of Web server references is one of the important characteristics to be considered in the design of a Web caching strategy, and it is important to measure the temporal locality exactly. Various methods to estimate the temporal locality have been proposed, however, Web server designers have still troubles in its measurement by using the tools that don't reflect the interarrival time of document requests. In this paper, we propose a measurement tool for short-term temporal locality based on request interarrival time, and discuss the simulation results based on the flares from NLANR and NASA Web sites. The results show that the proposed tool estimates the short-term temporal locality more exactly than that based on a stack.

  • In semantic web information system like ontology that access distributed information from network, efficient query processing requires an advanced caching mechanism to reduce the query response time. P2P network system have become an important infra structure in web environment. In P2P network system, when the query is initiated, reducing the demand of data transformation to source peer is important aspect of efficient query processing. Caching of query and query result takes a particular advantage by adding or removing a query term. Many of the answers may already be cached and can be delivered to the user right away. In web environment, semantic caching method has been proposed which manages the cache as a collection of semantic regions. In this paper, we propose the semantic caching technique in cluster environment of peers. Especially, using schema data filtering technique and schema similarity cache replacement method, we enhanced the query processing efficiency.

  • In this paper we study and analyze the influence of caching strategies on the performance of WWW servers, We propose a new strategy called file type based caching that aims to obtain a well-balanced mixture between large and small files in the cache, and moreover, it provides good performance for both small and large file as expected, By using the type based caching good results are obtained for both the hit rate and the byte hit rate.

  • Generally we use web cache in order to increase performance of web base system, and a replacement technique has a great influence on performance of web cache. A web cache replacement technique is different from a replacement technique of memory scope, and a unit substituted for is web object Also, as for the web object, a variation of user reference characteristics is very great. Therefore, a web cache replacement technique can reflect enough characteristics of this web object. But the existing web caching techniques were not able to reflect enough these object reference characteristics. A principal viewpoint of this study is reference characteristic analysis, an elevation of an object hit rate, an improvement of response time. First of all we analyzed a reference characteristics of an web object by log analysis. And we divide web cache storage scope using the result of reference characteristics analysis. In the experiment result, we can confirm that performance of an object-hit ratio and a response speed was improved than a conventional technique about a proposal technique.

  • The fast and Precise service for the users request is the most important in the World Wide Web. However, the lest service is difficult due to the rapid increase of the Internet users recently. The Shared Web Caching (SWC) is one of the methods solving this problem. The performance of SWC is highly depend on the hit rate and the hit rate is effected by the memory size, processing speed of the server, load balancing and so on. The conventional load balancing is usually based on the state history of system, but the prediction of the state of the system can be used for the load balancing that will further improve the hit rate. In this study, a Hot Spot Prediction Method (HSPM) has been suggested to improve the throughputs of the proxy. The predicted hot spots, which is the item most frequently requested, should be predicted beforehand. The result show that the suggested method is better than the consistent hashing in the point of the load balancing and the hit rate.
