The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the rock mass conditions with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. Therefore, a database which includes 13 load tests performed on cast-in-place concrete piles and soil investigation data at the field test sites was made first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. Pressuremeter modulus and limit pressure, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. In addition, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.
Forces exerted on a shield TBM (tunnel boring machine) such as cutter head torque, thrust force, chamber pressure, and upward force are key factors determining TBM performance. However, the forces acting on the TBM when tunnelling the mixed ground have different tendencies compared to that of the uniform ground, which could impair TBM performance. In this study, the effect of mixed ground tunnelling was numerically investigated with torque, thrust force, chamber pressure, and upward force. A coupled discrete element method (DEM) and finite difference method (FDM) model for TBM driving model was used. This numerical study simulates TBM tunnelling in mixed ground composed of upper weathered granite soil and lower weathered rock. The effect on the force acting on the TBM according to the location and slope of the boundary of the mixed ground was numerically examined.
The geotextile filter, which is installed between the ground and the lining and used as a tunnel drainage system, should have sufficient groundwater drainage capacity so that water pressure does not act on the lining. The clogging may have a serious effect on the long term behaviour of geotextile filters. Two typical weathered residual soils in Korea, Shinnae-dong soil and Poi-dong soil, were chosen to investigate the in-plane flow characteristics of the soils with varying degree of compressive stresses applied on the geotextiles and with various conditions of hydraulic gradient. The Shinnae-dong soil is a relatively coarse material classified as'SW-SM'; on the other hand, the Poi-dong soil is much finer and is classified as'SC'. Based on the comparison of the $O_{95}$ of geotextile to the $D_{15}$ of residual soils, existing clogging criteria were reviewed, and a tentative clogging criterion for the in-plane flow of the residual soil through filters was proposed. The Shinnae-dong soil showed noticeable clogging phenomenon, while the clogging of the Poi-dong soil was not so serious. The Poi-dong soil seemed to be hindered in particle transport by its cohesiveness.
A series of field pull-out tests were carried out to investigate the behaviour of multi-pressurized soil nails. Ten soil nails were constructed in weathered soil and then, subjected to pull-out loads. The test results showed that the ultimate pull-out resistances of soil nails constructed with high pressure were about 42~142% larger than those obtained from conventional soil nails. The deduced interface shear strength at the ground-grout interface was 71 kPa for conventional soil nails, while higher shear strength of 95~166 kPa was obtained for pressurized nails. The diameter of grouted borehole increased by about 12~27% compared to ordinary soil nails under low pressure. Also, the predicted value by the cavity expansion theory is in good agreement with the measured expanded radius of grout under injection pressure by field pull-out tests.
Recently, ground pits that have been occurring frequently in urban areas are hindering traffic flow and causing property damages and loss of human life, acting as factors that are threatening the safety of citizens. Therefore, sunken ground must be quickly restored and provisions must be made for additional damage but current domestic detailed standards regarding ground pits and accurate definitions regarding causes and measures to be taken for reoccurrences are lacking. Restoration methods of sunken ground include backfilling by reusing sunken soil or other fill material and paving the road and while this is the most often used method, this only prevents ground from sinking temporarily and can not serve as a fundamental solution. Also, additional ground pits can occur on ground that is reinforced using this method due to faulty backfill material or faulty hardening. This study used Eco-friendly High-Strength Material (EHSM) as restoration material that can be used in the restoration of underground cavities that have occurred due to ground subsidence to analyze the engineered characteristics of modified dredging clay and test pieces made from changed ratios of EHSM and weathered granite soil were uniaxial compression tests were conducted and freezing-thawing tests were conducted to study strength properties according to environmental changes of restoration material, and after tests were concluded by each level, uniaxial compression tests and dynamic elasticity tests were conducted for intensity analysis. Also, to evaluate strength characteristics of the restored ground, dynamic plate load tests were conducted to verify the improvement effectiveness of the restored ground.

This research is aimed at investigating the ground characterization of the Cheongju granite area using the geophysical methods. Test site was chosen from the building site in Chungbuk University, Chongju, Chungbuk province. Furthermore, geophysical methods are employed on the outcrops in the east to map the distribution of fault and intrusion and reveal the degree of weathering. The subsurface structure mapped from seismic re-fraction survey mainly consists of two units of weathered soil and rock. Threshold of the units were determined on the basis of seismic velocity of 800 m/s, supported from the standard classification table. From the results of standard penetrating test(SPT), these units are found to show medium-high and high density, respectively. Weathering soil is subdivided in unsaturated layer and saturated layer with thresholds of seismic velocity (500 m/s) and resistivity (200 ohm-m). In particular, unsaturated layer is again classified into dry and wet portions using the GPR section. The boundary between unsaturated and saturated weathering soils corresponds to the groundwater table at depth of approximately 5~6.2 m, which is well correlated with the one from drill-core data. However, bedrock is not delineated by geophysical methods. In the GPR section, fault and intrusion observed on the outcrop are revealed not to extend to the building site. With respect to weathering degree, the outcrop characterized by low resistivity and velocity corresponds to the grade of 'completely weathered' from the geotechnical investigations.

Micropiles can be used to support additional load in extended building structures. However, their use brings about a risk of exceeding the bearing capacity of existing piles. In this study, pre-compression was applied to distribute the load of an existing building to micropiles, and an indoor loading test was performed to confirm the structural applicability of a wedge-type anchorage device designed to improve its capacity. According to the test results, the maximum strain of the anchorage device was 0.63 times that of the yield strain, and the amount of slip generated at the time of anchorage was 0.11 mm, satisfying structural standards. In addition, using MIDAS GTS, a geotechnical finite element analysis software, the effect of the size of the pre-compression, the thickness of the soil layer, and the ground conditions around the tip on the reaction force of the existing piles and micropiles were analyzed. From the numerical analysis, as the size of the pre-compression load increased, the reaction force of the existing pile decreased, resulting in a reduction rate of up to 36 %. In addition, as the soil layer increased by 5 m, the reduction rate decreased by 4 %, and when the ground condition at the tip of the micropile was weathered rock, the reduction rate increased by 14 % compared with that of weathered soil.
Among various construction methods, deep soil stabilization by chemical method have been widely used in order to improve soft ground. Dynamic variables using ground(such as sand, weathered granite soil and rock) -structure interaction design affected by dynamic load and cyclic load were studied a lot. However, there is something yet to learn about earthquake resistant design regarding reinforced ground by grout. Therefore, in this study using RC test, the correlation between shear strain and shear modulus with change of water content and injection rate in normal portland cement and clay was compared and analyzed by using Ramberg-Osgood model normalization As the result, dynamic coefficient was considerably affected by water content and grout injection rate.
For the design of spread foundation and the stability evaluation, we compared and analyzed it for theoretical, empirical bearing capacity formulas, and various settlement computation formulas, by conducting the plate bearing test at the site of A and B, which consisted of gneiss weathered soil. In addition, we considered the effective method of stability evaluation by carrying out the plate bearing test carried out on the ground consisted of weathering soil of gneiss. Consequently, it was found out that the allowablebearing capacity by the theoretical formula of Terzaghi was too excessive in comparison with the result of the plate bearing test and the Terzaghi-Peck method, which was used widely domestically in designing the spread foundation. It was more effective for a stable design. As a result of the plate bearing test carried out, on the ground consisted of weathering soil. It was found that reviewing the stability by the bearing capacity calculated with load-settlement curve. It is evaluated in a safer side than the point of view of the settlement.

In the current work, a series of three-dimensional finite element analyses have been carried out to understand the behaviour of pre-existing single piles and pile groups to adjacent Shield TBM tunnelling by considering various reinforcement conditions. The numerical modelling has analysed the effect of the pile cutting, ground reinforcement and pile cap reinforcement. The analyses concentrate on the ground settlements, the pile head settlements, the axial pile forces and the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface. In all cases of the pile tips supported by weathered rock, the distributions of shear stresses presented a similar trend. Also, when the pile tips were cut, tensile forces or compressive forces were induced on the piles depending on the relative positions of the piles. Furthermore, when the pile tips are supported by weathered rock, approximately 70% of the load is supported by surface friction, and only the remaining 30% is supported by the pile tip. Furthermore the final settlement of the piles without reinforcement showed approximately 70% more settlement than the piles for which ground reinforcement is considered. It has been found that the ground settlements and the pile settlements are heavily affected by the pile cutting and reinforcement conditions. The behaviour of the single pile and group piles, depending on the pile cutting, conditions of ground and pile cap reinforcement, has been extensively examined and analysed by considering the key features in great details.
