  • Atmospheric nano-particles along the altitude is one of the main factors causing severe weather phenomena. It is a challenge to find the precise particle size distribution. One useful instrument includes a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). This measures the size distribution of submicron aerosols. The SMPS consists of a condensation particle counter (CPC), differential mobility analyzer (DMA), high voltage power supplier (HVPS), and neutralizer. Due to the many components, it is difficult to install a commercial SMPS into a tethered balloon package system (Eun, 2011). In this study, we customized a SMPS for the tethered balloon package system called Hy-SMPS. It is portable, compact in structure, and evaluated by TSI SMPS using mono and poly-dispersed particles.

  • Damaging winds, associated with a variety of weather phenomena, are frequently experienced in New Zealand. Observations and modelling of two recent extreme wind events; the Taranaki tornado outbreak of July 2007, and the Greymouth down-slope easterly wind storm of July 2008 are described in detail here. Post-event engineering damage surveys, rare for New Zealand, were done for these storms and the results are summarized here. Finally, the issue of sampling extreme wind events is raised and the need to include detailed numerical modelling analysis to understand wind gust climatologies at observing sites and extending these to wider regions is discussed.

  • SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) has characteristics well-suited for the measurement of geophysical parameters during day and night in all weather conditions. Recently, SAR data with high resolution acquired by satellites became available to the public. In such data, many features and phenomena of geometric structure of man-made objects and natural environments become observable. In this paper, we discuss main considerations including geometric distortion and coregistration for efficient utilization of high resolution SAR images. And, various advanced technologies in SAR application fields are introduced.

  • There are no immutable phenomena in reality. A lot of applications are dealing with data characterized by spatial and temporal and/or uncertain features. Currently, there has no any data model accommodating enough those three elements of spatial objects to directly use in application systems. For such reasons, we introduce a fuzzy spatio -temporal data model (FSTDM) and a method of integrating temporal and fuzzy spatial operators in a unified manner to create fuzzy spatio -temporal (FST) operators. With these operators, complex query expression will become concise. Our research is feasible to apply to the management systems and query processor of natural resource data, weather information, graphic information, and so on.

  • This research is for the visualization of wooden cracking phenomena in the virtual world. Timber supplies has been traditionally used for buildings in the all over the world. Wood has a characteristic that is more prone to be influenced and distorted under the external environments compared with other materials like as stone and concrete. Many related researches say that moisture content change is a largest impact factor for the distortion and crack of timber supplies. This is the reason why we focus on the relationship between the moisture variations and the wood distortion, especially crack. In this research, it is mathematically explained that the diminutions of tensile strength caused by repeated contraction and expansion according to the moisture variations under the changes of weather. Finally, we suggest a way to visualize it for pine timbers.

  • Realistic rendering of natural phenomena is a difficult problem. Many environmental factors must be considered to simulate this phenomenon. At the same time, we need to think about their computational complexity to be simulated with computer algorithm One of the most difficult problems in creating weather conditions is the rain. To simulate realistic rainy scene, you have to consider the physical properties of rain and the environmental where the rain is falling down as well. In this paper, we survey the modeling and rendering techniques for realistic rainfall scenes from three different aspects. First, we list up techniques for modeling raindrop dynamics. Second, we survey the rendering techniques that render the raindrop in the environment. Third, we take a look at the hybrid methods that combines the rendering the modeling at the same time. For each aspect, we compare the algorithms in terms of implementation and their speciality.

  • Weather condition is one of the crucial factors affecting travelers' mode choice. Nevertheless, there are numerous indefinite traffic phenomena under various weather conditions. This study was conducted to verify the hypothesis that transit riderships decrease as precipitation increases. To clarify the relationship between precipitation and transit ridership, a seemingly unrelated regression model was employed with data such as daily precipitation and daily transit riderships of 3 transit modes (bus, metro, and shuttle bus) collected in Busan for recent 24 months. The estimation results show that transit riderships decreased as the daily precipitation increased when the daily precipitation is greater or equal to 10mm/day (0.169%, 0.101%, and 0.172% reduction in bus, metro, and shuttle bus riderships, respectively, when the daily precipitation increased by 1mm). When comparing the impact of precipitation on transit riderships by modes using a cross-equation parameter restriction test, the decrease in metro ridership is relatively insensitive to the change in precipitation. However, the negative coefficient of precipitation in the metro ridership estimation model indicates that the transit users in Busan may alter their mode to taxi or automobile and/or may give up the trip itself in bad weather condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify climatic environment according to its characteristics in Korea using GIS. The necessary condition of climatic division is that it is able to indicate climatic phenomena systematically and it has scientific persuasive power. Precipitaiton, rainfall days, temperature and weather entropy which are consist of Korean climatic elements are of advantage to indicate climatic phenomena systematically. GIS(Geographic Information System)has scientific persuasive power. This paper shows the time-spatial variations of each climatic elements, using GIS to precipitation, rainfall days, Temperature and weather entropy in Korea. And writers tried to know these regional characteristics and to divide the detailed climatic environment objectively and systematically. The main result of this study is that the regional division of climatic environment in Korea can be classified into 8 types, in details, 26 or 48 types.

  • This study analyzed wind flows based on spatial and geomorphological characteristics of Daegu Metropolitan City. A three-stage analysis was performed, starting with a comparison of meteorological relationships between local wind direction (synoptic wind) and local wind flow. In the second stage the study area was subdivided into districts and suburban districts to analyze the relative change of local wind flow. In stage three, the formation of wind corridor for local wind flow, wind flow for the entire urban space, and spatial relationships between flows were verified comparatively using KLAM_21. Three results are notable, the first of which is a low correlation between synoptic wind of a region, and local wind, flow in terms of meteorology. Secondly, observations of local wind flow at five downtown districts and two suburban districts showed that there were diverse wind directions at each measurement point. This indicates that the spatial and geomorphological characteristics of areas neighboring the measurement points could affect the local wind flow. Thirdly, verifying the results analyzed using KLAM_21, compared to Atomatic Weather System(AWS) measurement data, confirmed the reliability of the numerical modelling analysis. It was determined that local wind flow in a city performs a spatial function and role in ameliorating the urban heat island phenomena. This indicates that, when an urban planning project is designed, the urban heat island phenomena could be ameliorated effectively and sustainably if local wind flow caused by immediate spatial and geomorphological characteristics is confirmed systematically and techniques are intentionally applied to connect the flows spatially within areas where urban heat islands occur.
