  • The operational environment of helicopters extends from the civil air traffic control system to remote and hazardous areas and from day operations under visual flight conditions to night operations in adverse weather. Helicopters can move in any direction, remain stationary while airborne, climb and descend vertically, and take off and land almost anywhere. Thus their range of maneuvers and control requirements vary more widely than do those of fixed-wing aircraft. In this study, I analyzed the job of helicopter pilot through methods of observation, and classified the required ability of them into the domain of cognitive, perceptual/spatial, psychomotor. I expect that the result of this study will be used to aid training and selection of helicopter pilot.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is an active microwave instrument that performs high-resolution observation under almost all weather condition. Research and algorithms have been proposed to process radar signal and to increase the quality of SAR products. In fact, many complicated steps are involved in order to generate a SAR image product. The purpose of this paper is to derive quality assessment procedures and define important test parameters in each procedure inside a SAR processor. Thus those test parameter values indicate the quality of SAR image products and verify the processor's performance. Moreover, required procedures to correct and handle errors which are indicated during the assessment are also presented.

  • Meteorological data contains observation and numerical weather prediction model output data. The computerized analysis and visualization of meteorological data often requires very high computing capability due to the large size and complex structure of the data. Because the meteorological data is frequently formed in multi-variables, 3-dimensional and time-series form, it is very important to visualize and analyze the data in 3D spatial domain in order to get more understanding about the meteorological phenomena. In this research, we developed interactive 3-dimensional visualization techniques for visualizing meteorological data on a PC environment such as volume rendering, iso-surface rendering or stream line. The visualization techniques developed in this research are expected to be effectively used as basic technologies not only for deeper understanding and more exact prediction about meteorological environments but also for scientific and spatial data visualization research in any field from which three dimensional data comes out such as oceanography, earth science, and aeronautical engineering.

  • Micrometeorlogical and upper air observation have been conducted in order to determine the atmospheric boundary layer depth based on data from satellite and automatic weather systems. Terra/MODIS temperature profiles and sensible heat fluxes from the gradient method were used to estimate the mixed layer height over a coastal region. Results of the integral model were in good agreement with the mixed layer height observed using GPS radiosonde at Wolsung ($35.72^{\circ}N$, $129.48^{\circ}E$). Since the variation of the mixed layer height depends on the surface sensible heat flux, the integral model estimated properly the mixed layer height in the daytime. The buoyant heat flux, which is more important than the sensible heat flux in the coastal region, must be taken into consideration to improve the integral model. The vertical structure of atmospheric boundary layer can be analyzed only with the routine data and the satellite data.

  • In this study the writer would like to study the art of navigation in the Era of Silla. For the purpose of this study, the writer studied ship's log book of Ennin's Diary, the ancient ship's structures of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, winds and ocean currents around Korean Peninsular which effect the navigation of sailing ship, and ancient reference books and materials. The result of this study. in the ship's structure in the Era of Silla. bottom structure is considered flat and V-Shaped type, and sailing ship had anchor, sail, considerable deckhouse, transverse bulkhead. And the ship's main materials of sailing ship was wood. partially used irons in the panting structures. In the art of navigation, navigators used winds, ocean current, anchor, sail, depth and color of sea water, lights, ballast. Especially navigators used astrologers and geomancers for astronomical observation, weather forecast, natural phenomena.

  • This study reports one approach for the classification of magnetic storms into recurrent patterns. A storm event is defined as a local minimum of Dst index. The analysis of Dst index for the period of year 1957 through year 2000 has demonstrated that a large portion of the storm events can be classified into a set of recurrent patterns. In our approach, the classification is performed by seeking a categorization that minimizes thermodynamic free energy which is defined as the sum of classification errors and entropy. The error is calculated as the squared sum of the value differences between events. The classification depends on the noise parameter T that represents the strength of the intrinsic error in the observation and classification process. The classification results would be applicable in space weather forecasting.

  • This study examined the influences of science project activities based on multiple intelligences on problem solving behaviors of elementary school children. Specifically, the influences of the project activities on the problem solving skills and propensities of the children were investigated. Forty-four fifth graders were selected for the study. They performed the projects and made their products of it during five months on the units of "Weather" and "Our Body" Criteria for assessment of problem solving abilities were determined. The patterns reflected in products of the project activities were examined, then the observation of the subjects' problem solving behaviors and the interviews were performed based on the criteria. The results were analyzed through both of qualitative and quantitative approaches. In these analyses, the implementation of the science projects was found to contribute to the improvement in all sub-factors of problem solving, specially, skills associated with the propensities of problem identification and of the collection, analysis, and synthesis of data significantly increased

  • The temporal variations of methene emission and its relation to air temperature were investigated in Upo-swamp during June 2007 through July 2008. To perform this study, the methene emission and air temperature were observed using the buoy-type chamber and automatic weather observation system(AWS), respectively. The methene emissions were much during summertime(June~August). The maximum value(about 73.4 mg/$m^2$/hr) appeared at August. The emission diminished by degrees after August. The methene emissions were fewer from September to May of the following year. The peak value(73.4 mg/$m^2$/hr) of the methene emission is very much compared to that of rice pappy field known as about 28.7 mg/$m^2$/hr.

  • This study is on the production and the classification of a new appreciation methods of seascape through materials in the words of Korean popular songs. In advance, it is necessary to understand the popular songs as collective representation and the songs are analytic data. In this study, some essential elements of seascape in popular songs are analyzed and classified. They are; 1. visible elements-weather, time, season and object. 2. all senses-vision, audition, olfaction, tactile sense, and spatial sense. 3. the line of vision-static line of vision and dynamic line of vision. In this way data is produced, and then the result of this study makes appreciation methods of seascape developed. In this way, this study results in developed appreciation of seascape. This study on new understanding of appreciation methods of seascape is on the basis of a design method of water-front that is considered a visible scene, not a design of construction elements.
