Tool wear in the shearing process such as blanking, piercing and trimming is very important, because it has great effects on the dimensional accuracy, working efficiency and economy. Most of tools in the shearing process have the coated layer at surface fur good wear and corrosion resistance. When the surface of tool is teated, the wear Phenomena of coated surface layer and inner layer may be different. This paper describes a computer modelling technique by the finite element method in order to investigate the wear mechanism and to predict the wear profile of Ti-N coated tool in piercing process according to the volume of Production. Wear coefficients of the coated layer and inner layer are obtained through Pin-on-Disk wear test, respectively. To verify the effectiveness of the suggested technique, the technique is applied to wear analysis in piercing recess of piston pin and simulation results are compared with experimental ones.
In this paper, we present the results of the wear analysis of journal bearings on a stripped-down single-cylinder engine during start-up and coast-down by motoring. We calculate journal bearing wear by using a modified specific wear rate considering the fractional film defect coefficient and load-sharing ratio for the asperity portion of a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime coupled with previously presented graphical data of experimental lifetime linear wear in radial journal bearings. Based on the calculated wear depth, we obtain a new oil film thickness for every crank angle. By examination of the oil film thickness, we determine whether the oil film thickness at the wear scar region is in a mixed lubrication regime by comparing dimensionless oil film thickness, h/σ, to 3.0 at every crank angle. We present the lift-off speed and the crank angles involved with the wear calculation for bearings #1 and #2. The dimensionless oil film thickness, h/σ, illustrates whether the lubrication region between the two surfaces is still within the bounds of the mixed lubrication regime after scarring of the surface by wear. In addition, we present in tables the asperity contact pressure, the real minimum film thickness at the wear scar region, the modified specific wear rate, and the wear angle, α, for bearings #1 & #2. To show the real shape of the oil film at wear scar region, we depict the actual oil film thickness in graphs. We also tabulated the ranges of bearing angles related with wear scar. We present the wear volume for bearings #1 and #2 after one turn-on and turn-off of the engine ignition switch for five kinds of equivalent surface roughness. We show that the accumulated wear volume after a single turn-on and turn-off of an ignition switch normally increases with increasing surface roughness, with a few exceptions.
The current investigation was performed to study sliding-wear-rate deviation (wear-rate data scatter) in carbon steels with various microstructures. Pure iron, 0.2 wt. % C steel, 0.45 wt. % C steel, and bearing steel (AISI52100) were used for the investigation. These steels possess different microstructures. Microstructures of the pure iron, two carbon steel and the bearing steel were full ferrite, ferrite + pearlite and full pearlite, respectively. Depending on the carbon content, the carbon steel had different pearlite-volume fractions. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were conducted using a ball-on-disk wear tester at a sliding speed of 0.1 m/s using a bearing ball (AISI52100) as a counterpart. Applied load and sliding distance were 100 N and 300 m, respectively. More than three (up to twelve) tests were conducted for each steel under the same conditions, and the mean deviations in the wear rate of the steel (microstructure) were compared. The wear-rate deviation in the steel with ferrite + pearlite microstructure was higher than that with ferrite microstructure, and the deviation decreased with the increase of pearlite volume fraction. The pure iron and the bearing steel specimens showed much less deviation. The high deviation observed from the ferrite + pearlite steel was attributed to irregular subsurface-crack nucleation and growth at the interface between the two micro constituents (ferrite and pearlite) during the wear test.

This paper was undertaken to do morphological analysis of wear debris for slipper-Pad of hydraulic rotary acuator. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the wear test device and wear specimens of the pin on disk type was rubbed in paraffinic base oil by three kinds of lubricating materials, varying applied load, sliding distance. The four shape parameters(50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) are used for morphological analysis of wear debris. The results showed that the four shape parameters of wear debris depend on a kind of the lubricating condition. It was capable of presuming wear volume for slipper-pad of hydraulic rotary acuator on driving time.
In the present investigation wear behavior of the 6061AI composites reinforced with 5, 10, 20% SiC particles for dry sliding against a SM45C counterface was studied as a function of load and sliding velocity. Sliding wear tests were conducted at two loads(19.6 and 49N) and three sliding velocities(0.2, 1 and 2 m/sec) at constant sliding distance of 4000 m using pin-on-disk machine under room temperature. Presence of SiC reinforcement particles in the composites has displayed a transition from mild to severe wear at relatively higher applied load and sliding velocity compare to that of the matrix metal. As the volume fraction of SiC particles increased, the transition moved to a more severe wear conditions. Eventually, mild wear prevailed at a most severe wear conditions in this study, that was 49N load and 2 m/sec sliding velocity in 20% SiC particle/6061AI composite.
The fabrication Process of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites by pressureless infiltration technique and the effects of additive Mg content and volume fraction of particulate reinforcement on mechanical and wear properties were investigated. It was found that the bending strength decreased with increasing volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. Whereas hardness increased with volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. The decrement of strength in case of high volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles was attributed to high porosity level. In terms of additive Mg content, $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing around 5~7wt% of additive Mg indicated the highest strength, and hardness values increased with additive Mg contents. Wear resistance of AC8A alloy were improved by reinforcement of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles especially at high sliding velocity. Wear property of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region. However a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which shows the minimum wear loss and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited almost same value as at slow velocity region, whereas wear loss of AC8A alloy almost linearly increased with sliding velocity. It was found that $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 20% exhibited abrasive wear surface regardless of sliding velocity and $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 40% showed slightly adhesive wear surface at low sliding velocity, and it progressed to severe wear as increasing the sliding velocity.

The SCM420 used mainly to automobile transmission gear has problems that it costs transmission gear maker much money in carburizing treatment. For this, it needs to alternate the existing material and heat treatment to new gear material and surface modification. For this, friction and wear experiment according to sliding speed and applied load was carried out to evaluate the wear resistance of two transmission gear materials with oxidation nitrocarburising and non-oxidation nitrocarburising NT100, The presumed wear volume was calculated with the image processing for evaluation of wear resistance of two transmission gear materials. The results show that the oxidation nitrocarburising has a distinguished wear resistance than non-oxidation nitrocarburising.

The wear behavior for the two types of composites, those are epoxy matrix composites filled with silica particles and aluminium matrix composites filled with SiC particles, were compared to investigate the wear mechanism for these composites. Especially, the effect of the volume fraction for the epoxy matrix composites and the particle size for the aluminium matrix composites according to the apply load and sliding velocity were investigated. Wear tests of the pin-on-disc mode were carried out and followed by scanning electron microscope observations for the worn surface. The addition of the fillers in the composites were improved the wear resistance significantly and changed the wear mechanism for the both composites. These results were identified by the observation of the worn surface after testing.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the wear volumes of engine journal bearings operating at variable angular velocity of a shaft in the beginning of firing start-up cycle. To do this, first we find the potential region of wear scar on engine journal bearings where the applied bearing load and crank shaft velocity are variable. The potential wear regions are discovered by finding minimum oil film thickness at every crank angle existing below most oil film thickness scaring wear (MOFTSW) obtained based on the concept of the centerline average surface roughness. Then we calculate the wear volume from the wear depth and two wear angles decided by the magnitude of each film thickness lower than MOFTSW at every crank angle. The results show that the expected wear region is located at a few bearing angles after and/or behind the upper center of a big-end bearing and the lower center of a main bearing. And the real wear region is similar to the estimated wear region. Further we find that the wear scar on an engine journal bearing may occur at re-starting time after switch-off of a start motor especially under the condition of high oil temperature.

The behavior of abrasive wear on counterpart roughness of glass fiber reinforcement polyurethane resin (GF/PUR) composites were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The friction coefficient, cumulative wear volume and surface roughness of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, ploughing, delamination, deformation of resin and cracking by scanning electric microscopy (SEM) photograph of the tested surface. As increasing the counterpart roughness the GF/PUR composites indicated higher friction coefficient. The surface roughness of the GF/PUR composites was increased as the sliding velocity was higher and the counterpart roughness was rougher in wear test.
