  • During rolling, rolling mill rolls endure wear when shaping metal billets into a desired form, such as bars, plates, and shapes. Such wear affects the lifespan of the rolls and product quality. Therefore, in addition to rigidity, wear performance is a key factor influencing the performance of rolling mill rolls. Conventional methods such as casting and forging have been used to manufacture rolling mill rolls. However, powder alloying methods are increasingly being adopted to enhance wear resistance. These powder manufacturing methods include atomization, canning to shape the powder, hot isostatic pressing to combine the powder alloy with conventional metals, and various wear performance tests on rolls prepared with powder alloys. In this study, numerical simulations and experimental tests were used to develop and elucidate the wear analysis mechanism of rolling mill rolls. The wear characteristics of the rolls under various rolling conditions were analyzed. In addition, experimental tests (wear and surface analysis tests) and wear theory (Archard wear model) were used to evaluate wear. These tests were performed on two different materials in various powder states to evaluate the different aspects of wear resistance. In particular, this study identifies the factors influencing the wear behavior of rolling mill rolls and proposes an analytical approach based on the actual production of products. The developed wear analysis mechanism can serve the future development of rolls with high wear resistance using new materials. Moreover, it can be applied in the mechanical and wear performance testing of new products.

  • This study deals with characterizations of microstructure and wear performance of a cladding layer, product on 1.9 mm-thick mild steel plate by the electric resistance welding, of composite metal powder of Coarse WC-6.5%Co and high carbon alloy(SHA). The cladding layer was examined and tested fur microstructural features, chemical composition, hardness, wear performance and wear mechanism. The cladding layer have two different matrix were observed by an optical microscope and EPMA. The one was the coarse WC-6.5Co structure. The other was the melted SHA with surrounding the WC-6.5Co structure. The hardness of WC-6.5Co was 1210HV. The hardness of SHA was 640HV. In comparison by wear rate, the cladding layer showed the remarkable wear performance that was 15 times of SM490 and about 62% of D2.

  • Magnesium and its alloys are attracted towards all engineering applications like automotive, marine, aerospace etc. due to its inherent high strength to weight ratio. But, extensive use of Mg alloys is limited to the current scenario because of low wear and corrosion resistance behavior. However, equal channel angular press is one of the severe plastic deformation technique which has been effective method to improve the wear and corrosion resistance by achieving fine grain structure. In this study, the effect of grain refinement on wear and corrosion resistance of AZ80 Mg alloys were investigated. The wear behavior of the coarse and fine-grained Mg alloys was examined through $L_9$ orthogonal array experiments in order to comprehend the wear behavior under varies control parameters. It was shown that ECAPed alloy increased the wear and corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy through the formation of fine grain and uniform distribution of secondary ${\beta}-phase$. Also, the performance of AZ80 Mg alloy for these changeswas discussed through SEM morphology.

  • A comparative analysis of wear resistance and shock resistance tests shows that wear resistance is up to 6 times and at least 2 times higher wear resistance than current products, even considering the limited number of turns due to too much rotation. In the case of shock resistance, there was no problem except 7.5T, but this is only a result of KS test method, so it is deemed that additional fall impact tests by various objects in daily life are needed for practical comparison.

  • Characteristics of the wear resistance thermal sprayed coatings was investigated in order to determine proper coating process. Hardness evaluation and microstructural observation were conducted to find relationship between coating characteristics and its wear performance. It was found that HVOF process would give better properties than arc thermal process in terms of hardness and adhesion strength which resultantly determine wear performance of the coatings.

  • Sintered materials have been applied widely in Valve Seat Inserts (VSI). The amount of wear on VSIs increases when used in gas (LPG, CNG) engines because of their dry environments. In this paper, two newly developed high performance VSI materials for gas engines are introduced. These materials applied new techniques, which are both high performance hard particle and new distribution method of solid lubricant, to increase wear resistance.

  • Recently, surface modification technology is of importance to improve the wear resistance and the corrosive resistance for high accurate mechanical parts such as LM guide, Ball Screw and Roller Bearing etc., Those has generally featured on rolling contact mechanism to improve not only the wear and the friction, but also the accuracy and the corrosion performances. For surface modifications of high accurate mechanical parts, normally thermal spray, PVD, CVD and E.P. processes have been used with many materials such as DLC, raydent, W, Ni, Ti etc. Diamondlike carbon (DLC) films possess a combination of attractive properties and have been largely employed to modify the tribological behaviors such as friction, wear, corrosion, fretting fatigue, biocompatibility, etc. However, for rolling contact mechanism mechanical parts DLC films are needed to study for commercial benefit. Rolling contact mechanism has features on effects of cyclic motions and stresses, and also not simply sliding motions. The papers focused on the performance test of wear and corrosive resistance according to Me-DLC film thickness. And also, its thickness effect of wear analysis was carried out through the simulation of the maximum shear stress under the rolling contact surface. As the results, Me-DLC films have more potential to improve the wear resistance for high precision mechanical parts than raydent films.

  • TiCN based submicron cermet and similar ISO grad of the conventional cermets with TiCN of different particle size were produced by PM process, and their microstructure, mechanical properties and cutting performance were compared. The microstructure of submicron cermet was more homogeneous and showed much finer microstructure, resulting in better hardness and fracture toughness. The submicron cermet tools achieved excellent cutting performance such as wear resistance and toughness in comparison with two grades of the conventional cermets in millimg test. The relationship between microstrucure, mechanical properties and cutting performance of these cermet tools was discussed. The submicron cermet tools revealed for their potential to wide application range and interrupt cutting because of their superior wear resistance and toughness combinations.

  • Recently, with the high performance and efficiency of machine, there have been required the multi-functions in various machine parts, such as the heat resistance, the abrasion resistance and the stress resistance as well as the strength. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out to investigate the fatigue characteristics of high carbon steel (SM53C) experienced by high-frequency induction treatment. The Cam nose part of the Automobile's Cam shaft is strongly bumped with rocker arm or valve-lift. Therefore abnormal wear such as unfair wear and early wear occur in the surface. This abnormal wear causes a defect that bad timing open and close actions of the engine valve happen in the combustion chamber so the fuel gas will be combustion imperfect. Therefore, the cam shaft demands high hardness and wear resistance. In this study, high frequency heat treatment has been accomplished while wear test for material SM53C.

  • This study has evaluated the wear behavior of PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) Inconel 625 and Stellite 6 overlays on Nimonic 80A substrate. Nimonic 80A alloy was also included for comparison. In order to evaluate the wear performance, three-body abrasive wear test and pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test were performed. Microstructural development during the solidification of deposits is also discussed. Wear test results show that the wear rate of Stellite 6 deposit is lower than that of Inconel 625 deposit and Nimonic 80A. The sliding wear resistance of overlay deposits follows a similar trend to the abrasive wear resistance, but for Nimonic 80A. The main wear mechanisms were abrasive wear for Inconel 625 deposit, adhesive wear and delamination for Stellite 6 deposit in pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test and ploughing in three-body abrasive wear test. Cross sectional examinations of the worn surface of pin specimens after pin-on-disk dry sliding wear test implies that the plastic deformation near worn surface has occurred during the wear testing.
