  • The effects of added elements, such as Co or Nb, on wear properties of high speed steel by powder metaliurgy(PM-HSS) had been eluminated in auther's previous paper. In addition, it is generally known that the wear properties of materials have been influenced by heat-treating conditions as well. Therefore, a study has been done to clarify the effects of heat-treating conditions on wear properties of PM-HSS. The wear tests have been performed under the same conditions as the previous paper using heat-treated PM-HSS(5%Co-1%Nb) with different quenching and tempering temperatures. The result of this paper shows that wear resistance of PM-HSS is improved with relatively high quenching temperature. However, tempering temperature is not sensitive to the wear resistance in the range of high quenching temperature. It may be deduced by the fact that the shear strength of matrix by strengthening mechanisms due to not only the quenching aging but also dispersion-hardening is improved.

  • Rails are continuously exposed to severe environments due to increases in train service frequency, passing tonnage, and speed. Wear is one of the most common types of damage observed on rails. The surface of railsis heat treated to secure safety at critical sites, such as curved tracks or turnouts. Ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM), a new approach for rails, was examined to strengthen the rail surface. The effect of UNSM on the wear resistance of rail specimens was compared with that of heat treatment. Wear resistance was improved after UNSM treatment due to increased hardness and surface compressive residual stress.

  • Effects of cryogenic treatment and tempering temperature on the amount of retained austenite, hardness and wear properties has been investigated using alloy tool steel, STD 11. Cryogenic treatments were performed at the temperatures of $-100^{\circ}C$, $-150^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$, and tempering were performed at $200^{\circ}C$ and $530^{\circ}C$. It was shown that lower hardness value was obtained on high temperature ($530^{\circ}C$) tempering even after cryogenic treatment. And retained austenite was not entirely transformed to martensite after cryogenic treatment even at $-196^{\circ}C$, which was not consistent with the belief that $-80^{\circ}C$ was sufficient to entirely transform any austenite retained in the quenched microstructure. Austenite retained in cryogenic treated condition was completely transformed to martensite only after tempering at $530^{\circ}C$. As far as wear test conditions in this investigation, it was found that cryogenic treatments improved the sliding wear resistance, but improvement of wear resistance was not directly related with retained austenite contents. And it was found that predominent wear mechanisms of STD 11 steel were oxidation wear and adhesive wear In sliding wear conditions.

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of the Sursulf treatment time and the traveling speed of surface hardening treatment on the hardness and the wear characteristics by applying the combined heat treating techniques of Sursulf process followed by induction hardening treatment to mild steel. It has been shown that increasing the Sursulf treatment time increases the case depth, but both hardness and wear resistance are not considerably improved. When the combined heat treating technique of high frequency induction heating after Sursulf treatment is applied, an improvement in case depth as well as wear resistance is obtained. In particular, the hardness in diffusion zone is greatly increased due mainly to the formation of martensite and possibly lower bainite. Iron oxides formed during induction heating and subsequent water spray cooling in the outermost part of compound layer may be considered to cause some increases in hardness and wear resistance.

  • The production technology of high strength and toughness wear resistance steel involves attempt to application of severe wear parts for the construction machinery. A well balanced alloy content ensures that optimum tensile properties are achieved for the high strength. After high temperature deformation like as rolling or forging it has bainite microstructure and lower yield rato(under 80%) The effectiveness of the research approach is illustrated with experimental results on good steel cleanliness(O2 :12.2 ppm, 0,004% S, 0.008%, P nonmetalic inclusion dT: 0.10) and excellent mechanical properties (TS$\geq$140kgf/mm2 El $\geq$10% IV$\geq$20j/cm2) Therefore this should be wear resistance steel which develops high strength and high toughness without heat treatment

  • A study on adhesion and wear resistance of VC(vanadium carbide) coating on die steels, STD11 and STD61, has been carried out. The VC coating on the die steels was made by immersing them in molten borax bath, a kind of TRD(thermo-reactive deposition and diffusion). Adhesion strength and wear resistance were investigated using scratch test, indentation test and plate-disc test(Ogoshi type) respectively. The influence of sliding distance on the amount of wear has been determined and dominant wear mechanisms has been characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS spectroscopy. The critical adhesion strength($L_c$) between VC coating layer and substrate(STD11) was increased to 60N($L_c$) in the scratch test. In the case of STD61, the strength increased to 24N. The wear resistance of VC coated die steels was excellent because the diffusion layer formed just below the coating layer. The dominant wear mechanism was identified as adhesive wear for VC coating die steels which were worn by combination of cracking and plucking of VC fragments and disc.

  • To improve properties of wear resistance and anti-corrosion of the trivalent chromium platings, oxinitrocarbunsing and steam oxidation were conducted. Armophous trivalent Cr platings could be transformed to chromium carbides of high hardness, that showed low friction and wear rate. Even though micro-cracks were within as platings, superior anti-corrosion property was obtained by these treatments due to healing of cracks at the interface between the trivalent chromium platings and substrate.

  • Aluminum alloys have been widely used in engine materials, cold & hot-water storage vessels and piping etc., Furthermore, the aluminum alloy of AC8A have been widely used in mold casting material of engine piston for various vehicles because of its properties of temperature, wear and corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is considered that evaluation of corrosion resistance as well as wear resistance of AC8A material is also important to improve its property and to prolong its lifetime. In previous paper, the effect of solution($510^{\circ}C$:4hrs) and tempering($190^{\circ}C$: 16, 24, and 36 hrs)heat treatments to corrosion resistance and hardness were investigated using electrochemical method. In this study, in order to examine completely the effect of the tempering hours to hardness variation and corrosion resistance, the results of solution($510^{\circ}C$:4hrs) and tempering($190^{\circ}C$: 2, 4, 8 and 12hrs)heat treatments to hardness and corrosion resistance were investigated using electrochemical method. The hardness decreased with solution heat treatment compared to mold casting condition, but its value increased with tempering heat treatment. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance increased with decreasing of the hardness, and decreased with increasing of the hardness reversely. And the tempering heat treatment temperature at $190^{\circ}C$ for 8 hrs exhibited the highest value of the hardness and also indicated the highest corrosion current density. However, the values of hardness and corrosion current density was again increasingly decreased with increasing of tempering hours than 8 hrs, Consequently, it is suggested that decision of the optimum. tempering hours is very important to improve the corrosion or wear resistance.

  • There are several effective factors to influence die life in the warm forging process. For instance process design die design and die materials etc This study presented heat treatment method which could improve toughness and wear resistance simultaneously in high temperature to apply high speed tool steels like SKH51 to die material for warm forging process. To verify the feasibility of application of heat treatment method mentioned above wear test was performed under the condition of constant time in 40$0^{\circ}C$ Wear coefficient was examined to search a relation between wear amount and time for each material and heat treatment method in 30, 60, and 130 minutes. To quantify the toughness-behavior between room and high temperature impact test was performed and heat fatigue test also fulfilled to compare with the resistance of heat check in room, 200, 400, and $600^{\circ}C$ temperature. On the basis of experimental results mentioned above high speed tool steel was applied to verify appropriateness of newly proposed heat treatment method for die of rotor pole used in automobile alternator. As a result die life of high speed tool steel applied newly proposed heat treatment is longer than that of STD61.

  • The SCM420 used mainly to automobile transmission gear has problems that it costs transmission gear maker much money in carburising treatment. For this, it needs to alternate the existing material and heat treatment to new gear material and surface modification. For this, friction and wear experiment according to sliding speed and applied load was carried out to evaluate the wear resistance of two transmission gear materials with carburising SCM420 and nitrocarburising NT100, The presumed wear volume was calculated with the image processing for evaluation of wear resistance of two transmission gear materials. The results show that nitrocarburising NT100 has a distinguished wear resistance than carburising SCM420.
