Purpose: Providing tutoring services may be one of the most effective practices for improving academic performance and student retention. However, there is little information on the difference between mandatory tutoring (MT) and voluntary tutoring (VT) on the impact of student academic performance. This investigation compared the effectiveness of VT and MT services in the three upper level undergraduate classes. Research design, data, and methodology: Baseline data were collected in a spring semester where no tutoring of any kind was offered (control group (CG), n=78). The MT (n=104) was required in the following fall semester, and in the next spring semester only VT (n=97) was offered. Descriptive statistics and One-way ANOVA using IBM SPSS v23 (Chicago, IL) were used to analyze the final grades of the courses to identify differences in final grades between semesters. Results: Although final grades averaged from three classes were highest in the MT group, there were no statistical differences between the MT and VT groups, F(2, 292) = 1.150, p =.318. Conclusion: This study indicates there was no significant difference in academic performance between the two tutoring types, but that both tutoring services can be effective.

The purpose of this study is to introduce an efficient measure in Korean language education for learners of Korean by applying shadowing techniques which focus on improving not only listening and speaking skills but also reading and writing skills. First of all, the study discusses about the definition of shadowing along with the effect of shadowing. The second part will be about examining the proposed method related to shadowing technique which is comprised of original shadowing techniques and other techniques transformed from the original. Thirdly, the paper will be discussing background information of the shadowing technique in previous researches and experiments using shadowing techniques in Korean language education. Finally, there will be an introduction of learning measures that apply to skill unification. Most of the previous researches of the shadowing technique were limited to a few students with only mid-to-high level learners while this method could cover up to a wide range of learners. The most effective way of learning a foreign language would firstly be the suggested method and the focus should be on repetition and practice of the learners.

The expansion of information sharing activities using online can increase the threat of information exposure by increasing the diversity of approaches to information within an organization. The purpose of this study is to present conditions for improving the information security compliance intention of insiders to improve the level of information security within the organization. In detail, the study applies the theory of planned behavior that clearly explains the cause of an individual's behavior and proposes a way to increase the compliance intention by integrating the social control theory and goal-setting theory. The study presented research models and hypotheses based on previous studies, collected samples by applying a questionnaire technique, and tested hypotheses through structural equation modeling. As a result, information security attitude, subjective norms, and self-efficacy had a positive influence on the intention to comply. Also, attachment, commitment, and involvement, which are the factors of social control theory, formed a positive attitude toward information security. Goal difficulty and goal specificity, which are the factors of goal setting theory, formed a positive self-efficacy. The study presents academic and practical implications in terms of suggesting a method of improving the information security compliance intention of employees.

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a Laughter Therapy Group Counseling Program on overcoming anxiety, depression, and improving the self-esteem of mothers. The State-Trait Anger Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Self-Esteem Scale were used as a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test respectively. The test results were analyzed using a t-test, a one-way analysis of variance. Twelve mothers suffering from anxiety and depression participated in eight sessions of the program, and were then compared with twelve mothers in the control group who did not receive the treatment. The treatment group showed statistically significant improvements in self-esteem, and reduced levels of anxiety and depression, in comparison to the control group. It was concluded that the program was effective in overcoming anxiety, depression, and improving self-esteem in mothers.

The city environment construction of China is facing many difficulties and challenges. Through the concerted exploration in the recent years to find the way of improving city environment that is suitable to Chinese situation, the result is to plan and construct a complete green space system, supplement the defective conditions by the system's superiority and produce the integrated effectiveness. The article dissertates on the composition of green space system, some important issues in the planning and construction and corresponding measures. The fact illustrates the effectiveness of city green space system in solving the city environment problems. However it needs some research and continues improving.

This paper designed and developed internet based competency developing system for small IT (Information & Technology) companies. The purpose of this system was to provide career development opportunities to small IT business workers for their longstanding employment and self-improvement job skills. This study analyzed job competencies based on job descriptions from two IT companies. The survey was conducted to analyze employees' self-assessed current job competency level and effective ways of improving their current level of competencies. From the results of survey, most of subjects indicated their job competencies were in between mid-level to low level, and they required the need of training programs to improve their job knowledge and experience. Based on the interview from field experts about job competency development, this study designed and developed the internet based competency development system to provide effective and efficient way of improving job competencies and needed training programs for small IT business employees.

The dynamic nature of the World Wide Web challenges Search engines to find relevant and recent pages. Obtaining important pages rapidly can be very useful when a crawler cannot visit the entire Web in a reasonable amount of time. In this paper we study way spiders that should visit the URLs in order to obtain more “important” pages first. We define and apply several metrics, ranking formula for improving crawling results. The comparison between our result and Breadth-first Search (BFS) method shows the efficiency of our experiment system.

The purpose of the present study was to explore a model program to improve preschool children's self-concept, perspective-taking and prosocial behavior through "Understanding Activities of Self and Others." Sixty 5- to 6-year-old children were selected by random sampling from a Kindergarten located in Seoul. Thirty children were in the experimental group and 30 were in the control group. The 8-week intervention program used the instrument, "Understanding Activities of Self and Others," constructed by the present researchers. One-way ANOVA and MANOVA were used for data analysis. At the end of the 8-week period, significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups in self-concept, perspective-taking ability, and prosocial behavior. This indicates the effectiveness of the present study in improving children's affective, cognitive, and behavioral traits.

This paper presents an advanced patterned vertical aligned nematic liquid crystal (APVA) mode as a way of improving the transmittance of the conventional patterned, vertically-aligned nematic liquid crystal (PVA) mode. The APVA was characterized by multi-electrodes, which play an important role in generating a horizontal electric field that prevents LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between top and bottom slits in PVA mode. The proposed APVA mode focused on improving dramatically the transmittance with excellent image quality. In the simulation, the APVA mode improved the transmittance by more than 22%, compared to the conventional VA modes. Therefore, it is useful to upgrade the LCD display quality.

As the largest shipbuilding company in the world and the leader in the Korean merchant shipbuilding industry, Hyundai Heavy Industries is currently struggling to carry out intensive productivity improvement efforts in order to be the global merchant shipbuilding market leader by surpassing in the competition with Japan and being free from the defiance of China armed with very cheap labor costs. This paper introduces the academy-and-industry collaborative project, a part of the productivity improvement efforts, which has conducted on the steel stockyard operations. As a pilot project that researches for the way of improving the stockyard operations and ignites further projects on the stockyard operations, the project defined the stockyard operations, measured current situations, and analyzed management dilemmas. In addition, the project developed the steel stockyard operations simulator. Besides that the simulator is used by the operations manager who has heavily relied on his work-experienced intuition when making decisions, this paper expects that further projects on the stockyard operations utilize the simulator for their own purposes.
