  • In this paper, we have proposed a novel method using quantization of wavelet coefficients for secret data communication. First, speech signal is partitioned into small time frames and the frames are transformed into frequency domain using a WT(Wavelet Transform). We quantize the wavelet coefficients and embedded secret data into the quantized wavelet coefficients. The destination regard quantization errors of received speech as seceret dat. As most speech watermark techniques have a trade off between noise robustness and speech quality, our method also have. However we solve the problem with a partial quantization and a noise level dependent threshold. In additional, we improve the speech quality with de-noising method using wavelet transform. Since the signal is processed in the wavelet domain, we can easily adapt the de-noising method based on wavelet transform. Simulation results in the various noisy environments show that the proposed method is reliable for secret communication.

  • In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm for reducing the blocking artifact in block transform-coded images by using a wavelet transform. In the proposed method, an image is considered as a set of one-dimensional horizontal and vertical signals and one-dimensional wavelet transform is utilized in which the mother wavelet is the first order derivative of a Gaussian like function. The blocking artifact is reduced by removing the blocking component, that causes the variance at the block boundary position in the first scale wavelet domain to be abnormally higher than those at the other positions, using a minimum mean square error (MMSE) filter in the wavelet domain. This filter minimizes the MSE between the ideal blocking component-free signal and the restored signal in the neighborhood of block boundaries in the wavelet domain. It also uses local variance in the wavelet domain for pixel adaptive processing. The filtering and the projection onto a convex set of quantization constraint are iteratively performed in alternating fashion. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields not only a PSNR improvement of about 0.56-1.07 dB, but also subjective quality nearly free of the blocking artifact and edge blur.

  • Sea levels are rising as a result of climate change, and low-lying areas along the coast are at risk of flooding. Therefore, we tried to investigate the relationship between sea level change and climate indices using satellite altimeter data (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1/2/3) and southern oscillation index (SOI) and the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) data. If time domain data were converted to frequency domain, the original data can be analyzed in terms of the periodic components. Fourier transform and Wavelet transform are representative periodic analysis methods. Fourier transform can provide only the periodic signals, whereas wavelet transform can obtain both the periodic signals and their corresponding time location. The cross-wavelet transformation and the wavelet coherence are ideal for analyzing the common periods, correlation and phase difference for two time domain datasets. Our cross-wavelet transform analysis shows that two climate indices (SOI, PDO) and sea level height was a significant in 1-year period. PDO and sea level height were anti-phase. Also, our wavelet coherence analysis reveals when sea level height and climate indices were correlated in short (less than one year) and long periods, which did not appear in the cross wavelet transform. The two wavelet analyses provide the frequency domains of two different time domain datasets but also characterize the periodic components and relative phase difference. Therefore, our research results demonstrates that the wavelet analyses are useful to analyze the periodic component of climatic data and monitor the various oceanic phenomena that are difficult to find in time series analysis.

  • This paper proposes and adaptive nonlinear equalizer based on Volterra Series along with M-band wavelet transform(M-DWT). The proposed wavelet transform-domain approach leads to diagonalization of the input vector auto-correlation matrix, which yields clustering its eigenvalue spread around one, and improving the convergence rate of the corresponding transform-domain LMS algorithm. In particular, the proposed adaptive Volterra equalizer is employed to compensate for the output distortion produced by a weakly nonlinear system. Finally, some simulation results obtained by using a TWT amplifier model are provide to demonstrated the converging performance of the proposed approach.

  • The issues of preventive and condition-based maintenance, online monitoring, system fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis are of increasing importance. This study introduces a technique to detect and identify faults in induction motors. Stator currents were measured and stored by time domain. The time domain is not suitable for representing current signals, so wavelet transform is used to convert the signal; onto frequency domain. The raw signals can not show the significant feature, therefore difference values are applied. The difference values were transformed by wavelet transform and the features are extracted from the transformed signals. The dynamic time warping method was used to identify the four fault types. This study describes the results of detecting fault using wavelet analysis.

  • Wavelet transforms are used for implementing digital watermarking methods in the frequency domain. In this paper, we construct the digital watermarking using various wavelet transforms such as the Daubechies transform, Coiflets transform, Symlets transform and the biorthogonal transform, and we compare each digital watermarking method with the others. We investigate the preservation of the watermark after the data compression attack based on the discrete on the discrete cosine transform. We show that the biorthogonal wavelet, denoted by bior3.5, has the best performance among the wavelet types we selected in an experiment.

  • Analysis of faults in induction motors has become a major field of research due to importance of loss and damage reduction and maximum online performance of motors. There are several methods to analyze the faults in an induction motor from conventional Fourier transform to modern decision-making neural networks. Considering detectability of fault among all methods, a new fault detection solution has been proposed; it is called as frequency-domain Discrete Wavelet Transform (FD-DWT). In this method, the stator current is decomposed through series of low- and high-pass filters and consequently, the fault characteristics are more visible, because additional components have been reduced. The objective of this paper is early detection of input voltage unbalance in induction motor using wavelet transform in frequency domain. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in early detection of faults.

  • This paper presents a watermarking algorithm in the discrete wavelet transform domain using evolutionary algorithm. The proposed algorithm consists of wavelet-domain watermark insertion and genetic algorithm-based watermark extraction. More specifically watermark is inserted to the low-frequency region of wavelet transform domain, and watermark extraction is efficiently performed by using the evolutionary algorithm. The proposed watermarking algorithm is robust against various attacks such as JPEG and JPEG2000 image compression and geometric transformations.

  • To investigate the safety and stability of the concrete lining, numerous studies have been conducted over the years and several methods have been developed. Most signal processing method of NDT techniques has based on the Fourier analysis. However, the application of Fourier analysis to analyze recorded signal shows results only in frequency domain, it is not enough to analyze transient waves precisely. In this study, a new NDT technique .using the wavelet theory was employed for the analysis of non-stationary wave propagation induced by mechanical impact in the concrete lining. The wavelet transform of transient signals provides a method for mapping the frequency spectrum as a function of time. To verify the availability of wavelet transform as a time- frequency analysis tool, model experiments have been conducted on the concrete lining model. From this study, it was found that the contour map by Wavelet transform provides more distinct results than the power spectrum by Fourier transform and it was concluded that Wavelet transform was an effective tool for the experimental analysis of dispersive waves in concrete structures.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel interframe coding algorithm especially appropriate for 3-D medical images. The proposed algorithm is based on a video coding algorithm using motion estimation/ compensation and transform coding. In the algorithm, warping is adopted lor motion compensation (MC). Then, by using adaptive mode selection, a motion compensated residual image and original image are mixed up in the wavelet transform domain for improvement in coding performance. The mixed image is then compressed by the zerotree coding method. We prove that the adaptive mode selection technique in the wavelet transform domain is very useful lor 3-D medical image coding. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides good performance regardless of inter-slice distance and is prospective for 3-D medical image compression.
