Robust Wavelet Kalman Filter

  • Since Kalman filter and wavelet transform techniques are both suitable for a nonstationary process, wavelet-Kalman filter was proposed and applied to various industrial fields. However, the wavelet-Kalman filter subjected to model uncertainty with nonstationary process has not been considered. Thus, the robust wavelet-Kalman filter method is proposed in this paper. The proposed method can prevent the degradation of filter performance when parameter uncertainty exists in both the state and measurement matrices and preserve the merits of the standard Kalman filter in the sense that it produces optimal estimates. A simple example shows that the proposed approach outperforms the standard Kalman filter and the nominal wavelet-Kalman filter.

  • In JPEG2000, the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau (CDF) 9/7-tap wavelet filter adopted in lossy compression is implemented by the lifting scheme or by the convolution scheme while the LeGall 5/3-tap wavelet filter adopted in lossless compression is implemented just by the lifting scheme. However, these filters are not optimal in terms of Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) values, and irrational coefficients of wavelet filters are complicated. In this paper, we proposed a method to optimize image quality based on wavelet filter design and on wavelet decomposition. First, we propose a design of wavelet filters by selecting the most appropriate rational coefficients of wavelet filters. These filters are shown to have better performance than previous wavelet ones. Then, we choose the most appropriate wavelet decomposition to get the optimal PSNR values of images.

Image Restoration by Lifting-Based Wavelet Domain E-Median Filter

  • In this paper, we propose a method of applying a lifting-based wavelet domain e-median filter (LBWDEMF) for image restoration. LBWDEMF helps in reducing the number of computations. An e-median filter is a type of modified median filter that processes each pixel of the output of a standard median filter in a binary manner, keeping the output of the median filter unchanged or replacing it with the original pixel value. Binary decision-making is controlled by comparing the absolute difference of the median filter output and the original image to a preset threshold. In addition, the advantage of LBWDEMF is that probabilities of encountering root images are spread over sub-band images, and therefore the e-median filter is unlikely to encounter root images at an early stage of iterations and generates a better result as iteration increases. The proposed method transforms an image into the wavelet domain using lifting-based wavelet filters, then applies an e-median filter in the wavelet domain, transforms the result into the spatial domain, and finally goes through one spatial domain e-median filter to produce the final restored image. Moreover, in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method we compare the result obtained using the proposed method to those using a spatial domain median filter (SDMF), spatial domain e-median filter (SDEMF), and wavelet thresholding method. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to SDMF, SDEMF, and wavelet thresholding in terms of image restoration.

기저선 변동 제거를 위한Wwavelet Adaptive Filter의 설계 (Design of a wavelet adaptive filter for removal of the baseline wandering)

  • This paper describes a design of a Wavelet Adaptive Filter(WAF) for the removal of the baseline wandering and the minimization of the signal distortion using by wavelet transform and adaptive filter in the ECG signal. WAF consists of two parts. The first part is wavelet transform that decomposes the ECG signal into seven frequency bands using Vaidyanathan and Hoang wavelet. The second part is adaptive filter that uses the signal of seventh low frequency band among the wavelet transformed signals as primary input and a unit impulse sequence as reference input. For the evaluation of the performance of WAF, we used several baseline wandering elimination filters such as commerical standard filter with cutoff frequency of 0.5Hz and general adaptive filter. We made use of MIT/BIH database and real patient data for the evaluation. In conclusion, WAF showed a lower ST segement distortion than standard filter and adaptive filter and has a higher eliminated noise power than standard filter and adaptive filter.

  • In this paper we propose a novel way to restore degraded image using wavelet transform & filterbank. First, we devide a degraded image into 4-suband images using UDWT(Undecimated Wavelet Transform), and then use a proper CLS (Constrained Least Square) filter in each subband. Using a proper CLS filter ineach subband, we can save high grequency components of original image. We reconstruct a restored image from the downsampled subband images using wavelet tansform. Even though there is a trade-off between ISNR and calculation loads, we reduce the calculation loads by using wavelet transform in reconstruction with a negligible degradatiion in ISNR.

  • Wavelet scheme can be applied to the various remote sensing problems: conventional multi-resolution image analysis, compression of large image sets, fusion of heterogeneous sensor image and segmentation of features. In this study, we attempted wavelet-based filtering and its analysis. Traditionally, statistical methods and adaptive filter are used to manipulate noises in the image processing procedure. While we tried to filter random noise from optical image and radar image using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DW1) and Stationary Wavelet Transform (SW1) and compared with existing methods such as median filter and adaptive filter. In result, SWT preserved boundaries and reduced noises most effectively. If appropriate thresholds are used, wavelet filtering will be applied to detect road boundaries, buildings, cars and other complex features from high-resolution imagery in an urban environment as well as noise filtering

  • To classify the significant wavelet coefficients into edge area and noise area, a morphological clustering filter applied to wavelet shrinkage is introduced. New methods for wavelet shrinkage using morphological clustering filter are used in noise removal, and the performance is evaluated under various noise conditions.

  • 본 논문은 웨이블렛 영역에서 신호성분을 보존하면서 첨부된 잡음성분을 제거할 수 있는 새로운 잡음제거 필터를 제시한다. 적응적 웨이블렛 수축(AWS) 필터라 불리는 제안된 필터는 웨이블렛 제거기와 적응적 수축기의 두 개 연산기로 구성되어 있으며 각각의 연산기는 웨이블렛 계수의 국부적 통계성을 이용하여 적응적으로 추정되는 threshold에 의존하여 선택되는데 웨이블렛 제거기는 threshold보다 작은 웨이블렛 계수들을 0으로 대신하여 웨이블렛 영역에서 잡음을 제거하게 된다. 또한 적응적 수축기는 threshold보다 큰 계수들을 적응적으로 수축하여 신호성분을 보존하면서 잡음성분을 줄이게 된다. 실험 결과, 제안된 필터는 기존의 방법들보다 잡음을 제거하면서 신호성분을 보존하는데 더욱 효과적임을 보여준다.

잡음영상의 크기와 회전불변 패턴인식을 위한 광 웨이블릿 필터 (Optical wavelet filter for Rotation and Scale-Invariant Pattern Recognition of images with Noise)

  • 잡음을 갖는 영상의 크기와 회전불변 패턴인식을 위한 광 웨이블릿 CHF-fSDF((wavelet circular harmonic function-filter modulation synthetic discriminant function, WCHF-fSDF) 필터를 제안하였다. 웨이블릿 CHF-fSDF 필터는 기준영상에 대하여 크기변화된 영상들을 웨이블릿 변환한 후, 이들로부터 추출한 단일 원형고조함수를 학습영상으로 사용하여 합성한다. 제안된 광 웨이블릿 CHF-fSDF 필터는 정합필터의 형태로서 전통적인 4f 광 상관기에 적용할 수 있도록 하였다. 컴퓨터 모의실험을 통하여 제안된 필터는 크기변화와 회전에 무관한 상관출력을 나타내며 특히 잡음환경하에서 유용함을 확인하였다.

Median lifting optimization for lossy edge-dominant image compression

  • In JPEG2000, the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau (CDF) 9/7-tap wavelet filter is implemented using the conventional lifting scheme. On the other hand, this wavelet filter has two problems: the filter coefficients remain complex, and the conventional lifting scheme does not consider the image edges in the coding process. This paper proposes an effective lifting scheme to solve these problems. For this purpose, optimal 9/7-tap wavelet filters were designed in two steps. In the first step, the appropriate filter coefficients were selected. In the second step, a median operator was employed to consider the image edges. The experimental results with the median lifting scheme and the combination of filter optimization with the median lifting show that the proposed methods outperform the well-known CDF 9/7-tap wavelet filter of JPEG2000 on the edge-dominant images.
