  • Phenomenological nonlinear gain saturation effect on the noise characteristics of a multi-electrode DBR laser, when the lasing wavelength changes continuously, is presented theoretically. Using the optical transmission line theory, noise characteristics reliant on output power are analyzed by taking into account both the spontaneous enhancement factor K due to the distribution of the spontaneous emission along the active cavity and the nonlinear gain saturation effect. Spontaneous emission rate was increased due to an increase in injected current into the passive section, which in turn lead to increase in relative intensity noise (RIN) and frequency noise. Phenomenological nonlinear gain saturation was found to have significant effect on RIN and frequency noise characteristics. However. Iinewidth was found to decrease due to a phenomenological nonlinear gain saturation effect. ffect.

  • A new active muffler system has been developed and its superior performance on both noise reduction and engine torque increase is demonstrated with experiment. Main characteristic of the proposed muffler system is the use of destructive interference by transmission path difference of divided exhaust pipes to reduce major exhaust noise components thereby overcoming problems of other active exhaust noise control methods. The exhaust pipe is divided into two sections and joined again downstream. One divided pipe has a sliding mechanism to vary its length, which is controlled to make half wavelength transmission path difference for the major engine rpm frequency. In this system one divided pipe is used to control major rpm frequency and its Harmonics and another pipe is used to control noise component double the frequency of rpm. An after-market tuning muffler, which has very simple internal structure and minimal back pressure, is also installed to remove remaining wideband noise. To make the system to be small enough to be practical, conventional muffler is also installed and used in low rpm range and active muffler is only employed in high rpm range. Noise reduction of the proposed system is comparable to conventional passive muffler. The engine dynamo test has proved the proposed system can recover almost all the torque lost by conventional muffler.

  • Phenomenological nonlinear gain saturation effect on the modulation characteristics in a multi-electrode DBR laser, when the lasing wavelength changes, continuously is analized theoretically. FM efficiency, 3 dB bandwidth, and resonance frequency decrease with increasing bias current to the passive section, except increasing the flat FM response. It is found that the nonlinear gain saturation effect severely affects the modulation characteristics such as FM/IM response, 3 dB bandwidth, resonance frequency and CPR, but hardly affects the behavior of continuous frequency tuning.

  • Multipass Ti:sapphire amplifier for the light source of lidar was developed in an angular-multiplexing, and the characteristics of output energy and spectrum was investigated. In the two-stage multipass amplifier, we obtained the maximum output energy of 42 mJ, the amplification gain of 21 dB and the output efficiency of 26% on the wavelength of 790 nm. In the tuning range of 715~930nm the spectral linewidth is 0.05 $cm^{-1}$ /. The conversion efficiencies of 35% for SHG at 780 m and 13% for THG at 390 nm are obtained respectively. The continuous tunabilities of 240~306 m UV region and 360~460 nm in deep-blue region could be achieved.

  • On evaporation of water in polystyrene colloidal emulsion, the polystyrene colloidal particles are instantly protruded on the surface of water and are self-assembled by capillary force among the protruded particles. At the same time, the assembly of polystyrene colloidal particles is occurred on the surface of water owing to its lower effective density than water. Here we devised that the three-dimensional polystyrene colloidal crystals are quickly transferred onto the glass substrate by constructing wettable confined geometry on the glass substrate. We also applied the three-dimensional colloidal crystals to optical filters reflecting certain wavelength of light selectively by tuning the size of building blocks and incident angle of light.

  • Bathymetry change due to the 2011 Tohoku (M9.0) earthquake was investigated through satellite altimetry-derived free-air gravity anomalies (SAFAGA) and shipborne measurements. The earthquake occurred at the plate boundaries near the northeastern coast of Japan, where the oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate along deep-sea trench. Data analyzed in this study include SAFAGA from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), shipborne bathymetry (SB) from the U.S. National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth-Science And Technology (JAMSTEC). To estimate the bathymetry change, a reference bathymetry before the earthquake was predicted by gravity-geologic method (GGM) and Smith & Sandwell’s (SAS) method. In comparison with the bathymetry models before the earthquake, GGM bathymetry model generated by a tuning density contrast of 17.04 g/cm3 by downward continuation method was selected because it shows better bathymetry in the short wavelength below about 6 km. From the results, remarkable bathymetry change of about ±50 m was found on the west side of the Japan Trench caused by the earthquake.

  • Porous silicon (PS) was prepared by electrochemical anodization. Ultra-thin zinc oxide (ZnO) capping layers were deposited on the PS by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE). The effects of the ZnO capping layers on the properties of the as-prepared PS were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL). The as-prepared PS has circular pores over the entire surface. Its structure is similar to a sponge where the quantum confinement effect (QCE) plays a fundamental role. It was found that the dominant red emission of the porous silicon was tuned to white light emission by simple deposition of the ultra-thin ZnO capping layers. Specifically, the intensity of white light emission was observed to be enhanced by increasing the growth time from 1 to 3 min.

  • Terahertz (THz) wave generation from bulk and periodically poled $LiTaO_3$ (PPLT) with a Cherenkov phase matching scheme is numerically investigated. It is shown that by using the crystal birefringence of bulk $LiTaO_3$ and a grating vector of PPLT, THz waves can be efficiently generated by difference frequency generation (DFG) with a Cherenkov phase matching scheme. The frequency tuning characteristics of the THz wave via varying wavelength of difference frequency waves, phase matching angle, poling period of PPLT and working temperature are theoretically analyzed. The parametric gain coefficient in the low-loss limit and the absorption coefficient of the THz wave during the DFG process in the vicinity of polariton resonances are numerically analyzed. A THz wave can be efficiently generated by utilizing the giant second order nonlinearities of $LiTaO_3$ in the vicinity of polariton resonances.

  • A new approach for identification of a microwave frequency using an integrated optical waveguide chip, combined with a phase modulator (PM) and two microring resonators (MRRs), is proposed, theoretically deduced, and verified. By wavelength tuning to set the PM under the condition of a double side band (DSB), the measurement range can be started from the dc component, and the measurement range and response slope can be adjusted by designing the radius and transmission coefficient of the MRR. Simulations reveal that the amplitude comparison function (ACF) has a monotonic relationship from dc to 32.5 GHz, with a response slope of 5.15 dB under conditions of DSB modulation, when the radius values, transmission coefficients, and the loss factors are designed respectively as $R_1=400{\mu}m$, $R_2=600{\mu}m$, $t_1=t_2=0.63$, and ${\gamma}_1={\gamma}_2=0.66$. Theoretical calculations and simulation results both indicate that this new approach has the potential to be used for measuring microwave frequencies, with the advantages of compact structure and superior reconfigurability.

  • We have fabricated and characterized $32{\times}32$ photonic quantum ring (PQR) laser arrays uniformly operable with $0.98{\mu}A$ per ring at room temperature. The typical threshold current, threshold current density, and threshold voltage are 20 mA, $0.068A/cm^2$, and 1.38 V. The top surface emitting PQR array contains GaAs multiquantum well active regions and exhibits uniform characteristics for a chip of $1.65{\times}1.65mm^2$. The peak power wavelength is $858.8{\pm}0.35nm$, the relative intensity is $0.3{\pm}0.2$, and the linewidth is $0.2{\pm}0.07nm$. We also report the wavelength division multiplexing system experiment using angle-dependent blue shift characteristics of this laser array. This photonic quantum ring laser has angle-dependent multiple-wavelength radial emission characteristics over about 10 nm tuning range generated from array devices. The array exhibits a free space detection as far as 6 m with a function of the distance.
