  • The radiation characteristics of a phased array antenna consisted of rectangular waveguides with a slant grid are investigated here. In particular, the effects of the slant angle on the radiation patterns are calculated by solving numerically the integral equation to the electric field over the waveguide aperture in view of the modal analysis. And it is found that the blindness on the radiation pattern can be moved by inserting a dielectric plug or sheath properly.

  • An approximate, numerically-efficient solution for a microstrip T-junction is discussed. The microstrip T-junction is modeled as a rectangular waveguide with top/bottom electric walls and side magnetic walls. Comparisons of our solution with others show favorable agreements.

  • A field ploblem of a grounded dielectric slab covered by a conducting plane with periodecally spaced arbitrary number of slots excited by an aperiodis source is analyzed. The problem is formulated in terms of simultaneous integral equations for unknown electric fields at each slot. A sampling technique is introduced to reduce the system equations to a matrix equation equation involving Green's function matrix. The solution obtained in the form of infinite series is transformed, into a more rapidly convergent one in its final stage. Theoretical results agree closesly with the experimental results.

  • The analysis of eigenvalue and eigenvector is a crucial procedure for many electromagnetic computation problems. However, eigenpair computation is timing-consuming task. Thus, its parallelization is required for designing large-scale and precision three-dimensional electromagnetic machines. In this paper, the Davidson method is parallelized on a cluster of workstations. Performance of the parallelization scheme is reported. This scheme is applied to a ridged waveguide design problem.

  • When an electric (or a magnetic) line source is located near the surface, surface wave type field is generated and the energy associated with this field is guided very close to the impedance surface. In this paper, field strength is calculated by the exact modal and ray methods for a line source excited parallel plate waveguide. The surface wave contribution to the modal and ray solutions is anticipated very strong and must be included in both solutions.

  • The most serious difficulty in using the finite element method is the appearance of the so-called spurious, nonphysical modes. We have proposed the finite element formulation of the variational expression in the three-component magnetic field based on Galerkin's method. In this approach, the divergence relation H is satisfied and spurious modes does not appear and finite-element solutions agree with the exact solutions.

  • In this paper, a mircrowave breakdown of X-band circular waveguide cavity filter, which occurred during ground test, was introduced, and electro-magnetic field simulation results to identify a root cause, and the analysis of possibility of its occurrence on orbit operation were presented. Filter modeling for simulation was conducted with a commercial tool (FEST3D), and electric fields inside the filter were monitored at the input of 1 W continuous wave. In our observation, strong electric field intensities were monitored on the tuning screws especially at the input of band-edge frequencies. The threshold power levels for the breakdown were also estimated and compared with the input power levels actually injected to the filter. From this estimation, we could figure out that the power exceeding the breakdown threshold was injected to the filter so that strong electric fields were generated and temperature increased high, and this became a root cause of the electrical short. Our further analysis showed that this kind of microwave breakdown is not likely to occur on orbit operation, and multipactor is expected not to occur at the input of band-edge frequencies. As a measure to prevent the microwave breakdown, we suggested to avoid the injection of band-edge frequencies and inject lower power levels to the filter.

  • Femtosecond laser machining has been applied for creating a sensor function in silica glass optical fibers. Femtosecond laser pulses make it possible to fabricate micro structures in processed regions of a very thin glass fiber line because femtosecond laser pulses can extremely minimize thermal effects. With the laser machining to optical fiber using a single shot of 210-fs laser at a wavelength of 800 nm, it was observed that a processed region surrounded a thin layer which seemed to be a hollow cavity monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study aims at a theoretical investigation for the processed region by using a numerical analysis in order to embed sensing function to optical fibers. Numerical methods based finite element method (FEM) has been used for an optical waveguide modeling. This report suggests two types modeling and describes a comparative study on optical losses obtained by the experiment and the numerical analysis.

  • This paper presents a full-wave, moment method analysis of a Moreno directional coupler with tow crossed-slots between two crossed rectangular waveguides. the overall structure is divided into several rectangular waveguides and cavities by the use of the equivalence principle to the complex slot regions. this enables a simple and efficient analysis involving the well-known retangular waveguide/cavity Green's functions. For a numerically efficient simulation, the roof-top basis expansion and line testing is used and an acceleration technique is applied to the series summation in the Green's functions. The numerical results are compared with the measurements to verify the correctness of the present analysis.

  • This paper presents the propagation path loss in a tunnel which is a kinds of underground environments. To predict propagation path loss more accurately, we choose a straight tunnel with rectangular cross-section. The simulated receiver powers that are using a hybrid waveguide model and a Ray-Tracing method, are compared with the measured ones as a function of distance between TX and RX antennas in tunnel. The attenuation value of regression analysis for measured power in the tunnel is 0.0238dB/m which is similar to the one of the EH1.2 mode, 0.0246dB/m in hybrid waveguide model. By comparing simulation with measurement in tunnels, it has been shown that the measured values are approximate to the simulated results of ray-tracing model. In the analysis of wide-band channel characteristics of the tunnel, the more the distance between TX and RX antennas in tunnel increases, RMS delay spread increases and coherence bandwidth decreases.
